I've been a patient of Dr. Swainston for ten-plus years and it's been nothing but positive since day one. From the front to the back, everyone I've worked with has been amazing, friendly and honest - and I think that's all you can ask for in this day and age. I've mainly worked with Laurel, Debbie and Dr. Swainston and all three of them are incredible. The know exactly how to deal with a pain in the ass person like myself who honestly hated going to the dentist when I first started seeing them. Laurel is always quick to get me the answers I need and work with my schedule while always entertaining with our back and forth banter, Debbie is hands down the best at what she does and Dr. Swainston is just a solid, straight forward doctor. This is not about his dentistry. I was waiting to get my blood drawn at a service center in NB when I overheard him berating the phlebotomist throwing multiple expletives at her. I don't understand why a person feels compelled to do that to another person especially when all they are trying to do is their job. SMH. I suggest next time you want to go off on people, you probably don't want to be wearing your scrubs..... SMH. BEWARE of this guy. He's got a temper. Dr. Swainston is the best, but unfortunately he employs an old woman as his assistant that is as nasty and passive aggressive with patients as anyone I've ever seen. It is stunning that such a good guy could employ such a nasty piece of work. While I will keep seeing him, it is a terrible situation to have to deal with her constant inappropriate and condescending remarks. She often crosses the line and provides medical opinions she is not qualified to offer. read more

5 stars for routine cleanings!!! I give the staff 5 stars. They are amazing. If you are only seeing the dentist for routine cleanings, I recommend them a lot! Dr. S is also kind and helpful. I took down two stars because I was sold a $300, uncovered, mouth guard. It is unnecessarily uncomfortable. I know how it is supposed to work, but there are some serious design flaws. The concept is good, but even my husband (an engineer) seemed confused and annoyed at some of the design flaws. Unfortunately, that's $300 down the drain... I think there should be some 30 day return policy or something... read more

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Swainston for over 15 years maybe 20. I felt that for the most part we had a good relationship with him and the office staff. On a personal note with my own journey dental wise I've had five surgeries done on the front part of my mouth during 35 years. Unfortunately, I found myself with a loose front tooth from my dental implant. Naturally, I was upset. I called the dental office hoping to see the dentist whom was out of town for the weekend. They have an on-call emergency dentist which I was hoping that if I had a situation would I be able to see him I was told no. He won't see you due to COVID. Then why be an emergency dentist if he will not be taking patients? What if my tooth came out over the weekend I was told to go to CVS pharmacy and buy cement and do it myself. Until then I can come in on Monday to see the dentist. Laurel has been working with Dr. Swainston since I can remember. When I spoke to her about this I felt that there was no empathy no bedside manner and no compassion. That is what I felt and instead of expressing to me that it will be OK we have your back don't worry about it, instead I receive the opposite. That is my personal opinion and my feelings. Whether or not that is what she intended. When I came in on the office that Monday, I wanted to let both Dr. Swainston and Laurel know where was coming from. I wasn't mad, or insulting, I was just upset. As soon as I open my mouth to express my feelings on what I felt on Friday, I was immediately cut off told to shut my mouth, that I was a liar and get out of my office. That the emergency doctor does not work for you, which was not what I was trying to say. Since I was not able to get a word in edgewise. I was also told I was the worst patient ever. If that was the case, why bother having me as a patient at all? During the years that I have attended this office, anytime I have been upset and expressed any displeasure to the doctor or his staff has always been due to my front teeth problem. I have never been disrespectful, never been insulting, and believed that I have gotten along with everyone in the office. To be spoken to by him in this manner has been upsetting to say the least. He has lost my family and I due to his abrupt and unprofessional behavior. I told Laurel she could have apologized but she felt that she has nothing to be sorry for. I believe that teeth are a very important and personal part of a person. And I know that I have spent thousands of dollars on mine. I believe that if I have been a difficult patient for this office, it is due solely to the two implants that are in my mouth. Swainston is the best dentist I've had. Great with the basics as well as cosmetic. I also love how they work with my kids. They have even coached me on my flossing technique! Serious stuff! :~) The front office is super organized; when I need to make a change they always can come up with a reasonably close replacement for me. Are you kidding?! Why did I wait so long to have my front tooth fixed? Let me preface to say that I grew up in Maryland with my mom being an office manager of an excellent dentist for 20 years. I chipped my front right tooth 23 years ago when I was 18, and he bonded it with the warning that it may last for about 10 years. Well, it lasted for about 21 years. For the last two years, I've noticed the bond has completely worn off, but I haven't trusted anyone do to the cosmetic work. I have been able to get to know Dr. Swainston over the past 6 months and have learned that he is the tops of what he does. So, I decided to ask him for a visit to his office and let him take care of it. He took one look and said "Oh come in and will take care of that no problem!". He wasn't kidding. His staff set me up the next week (they are fantastic), paperwork was quick, the price was great, and I was in and out of there in 45 minutes! I'm so impressed with the experience, and I was so glad that I waited for the right Dentist. If anyone is putting off cosmetic fixes due to time, money, quality, etc. do not wait any longer. My wife and I have been coming here for over six years. Dr. Eric and his team have been my favorite dentist so far. I don't think Eric is the most affordable (hence I star removed) DDS around, but the value is good, the service is awesome, the staff nearly flawless. I love the hygienist. The office culture is pretty unique. If you visit, listen to Eric and his team interact. You can tell they don't take themselves too seriously all the time. Don't let the odd location off the main street and weird "medical stripmalll" turn you off. The inside is modern and clean. After numbing the area around my tooth, Dr. Swainston calmly narrated every step of the process, letting me know exactly what to expect. Over 20 years ago my wife chose Dr. Swainston randomly off a list, as he was the closest dentist in our network. Since then, he's left the network and moved much further away. I still haven't forgiven him for moving away, but I remain a faithful and very happy patient. Dr. Swainston is a total expert and I've never experienced a bit of pain. His chairside technique is second to none. He keeps the syringe out of your line of sight and, since he's already applied a surface anesthetic, when he sneaks that needle into your mouth, you're hardly even aware of it. A little later you're numb and he takes care of whatever procedure you came in for. He hires only the best hygienists and his office and lab assistants are first class. I highly recommend Dr. Swainston to everybody, but especially to those people who do not enjoy pain and want a perfect job on their mouth. read more

His office is in an older building in Costa Mesa, but it's clean and nicely decorated. His staff is friendly and have been with him for years. I went to Dr. Swainston for a few years when I need some major work done. An old bridge was needing replacement, old cheap fillings (thank you to the Navy) were ill fitting, leaking, and desperately needed replacing. In some cases, those old fillings had allowed the tooth underneath to decay, so crowns were needed. All this took several hours of procedures over a stretch of time. Dr. Swainston was recommended by co-workers, and I found that the recommendation was a great one. While the staff was attentive and professional, they were still able to joke around and be personable... a great asset when you're spending a good bit of time in that chair. Dr. Swainston was easy to talk to, perfectly willing to discuss what was needed and options. The front office went far above the norm in working with me to work on the most cost efficient means of utilizing insurance and flexible spending plan benefits. Every bit of work Dr. Swainston did was excellent, and I have had no problems and no pain. Even replacing a bridge I had due to an accident in my younger years, Dr. Swainston wouldn't accept just an "ok" look, and rebuilt the crown to achieve a great look. However, unlike others I've encountered, he did not try to push work that wasn't necessary. He really wanted to keep you natural teeth as long as reasonably possible. He wasn't just trying to do work to get the billing. Unfortunately, I live too far to continue to see him, but I definitely recommend him and his office. I have yet to find another dentist as good as he was, and I may just decide to do the commute to see him again. read more

I have a major dentist phobia after a bad experience and thanks to the great care of Dr. Swainston and Deborah, the dental hygienist, my fear is subsiding. I knew I needed deep cleaning and Deborah did a thorough and painless job of two quadrants and I'm amazed to say I'm looking forward to two more. After cleaning my first quadrant Dr. Swainston fixed a broken filling for me with expertise, gentleness and most appreciatively expediently.
