    Japanese beverages

This is one of our favourite restaurants. We have been coming here for years. We followed the owners Ryochi and Susan over from sushi suma. In fact, when I heard he was opening this restaurant in Devonshire street, I drove by for weeks in anicipation of its opening. This restautant is a bargain gem serving up simple fresh and generous Japanese meals for a reasonable price. Our go to is the sashimi salad and believe me salad is usually the last thing I would consider ordering. This salad is sure to cause some food envy, I have witnessed it on many an occasion. This is a salad for 2, it is literally a mountain of fresh salad including seaweed, carrot, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber topped with a generous varity of sashimi including salmon, tuna and king fish. The salad comes with a sweet tangy dressing and on the side the salad is accompanied with fresh wasabi and a thick creamy Japanese mayo. You can choose to mix the mayo in to the salad to turn it into a deicious japanese slaw or if you are on a heath kick, the salad tastes great just as it is. Suzuya also serves great Katsu(japanese schnitzel) pork and chicken, the lunch special comes with a tasty curry sauce which is a great flavour combination. The teriyaki is also nice, with a choice of salmon, chicken or beef. For a heathy option the sushi and sasimi combination is great value. Other recommendations include gyoza, miso nasu(eggplant served with a sweet miso sauce) chicken karage(Japanese fried chicken). The restraunt also has a variety of Japanese beverages available including beer, sake and umeshu(a sweet plum wine). The restaurant has a modern setting with hospitable and friendly staff. For a quirky side note: check out the bathroom at the back of the restaurant. It is decorated with pictures of Mt Fuji, Japanese actors and there is also a table and 2 chairs. I still haven't quite figured out why the table and chairs are in there, maybe it is for the ladies who go to the bathroom for a chat. Anyway back to the review. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal at this restaurant and as you can see would definitely recommend a visit. Be sure to book as it can get busy.

    Review Highlights - Suzuya

I really like how the table was spaced out more than Sushi Suma, so it's not like you are invading other people privacy.

Motto is the underdog of Japanese restaurants at Sussex Centre. Not only do they live in the shadow of highly rated Ramen Ikkyu, but Motto's location doesn't get the best foot traffic either. The escalators up from ground floor plop you out on the opposite side. This was my third time visiting Motto. Typically, there would be one or two very helpful and courteous girls who greet and coax you into checking out their menu. Thank goodness for picture menus! This time there was a dude by the of Chris working behind the counter. He first thanked me for stopping to look at the menu, then after suggesting that I should try one of the deep-fried options, he thanked me again for ordering. Genuinely courteous? Absolutely! CHICKEN KATSU PLATE ($9) OMG!!!! Best bang for your buck for suuuuure! The chicken is exactly how Chicken Katsu is supposed to be made. Crispy, flaky outside and juicy inside. If you've read my other reviews, you know I can consider myself a bit of a Chicken Katsu snob since that's my go-to-dish at Japanese restaurants. To top things off with this belly-loving dish, you get rice, a side salad w/dressing and miso soup... Oh and almost forgot THE BEST part - FREE ICE CREAM!!!!! Definitely coming back again to try another suggestion..

It is located in the courtyard of an apartment complex on Mountain Street and Broadway. I can only hope someone is clever enough to search for 'sushi' and will find this review. I was never avid fan of sushi so I didn't really eat it all that often. But things changed when I found T&J Fresh Sushi. Now I order by phone for the whole office so frequently that they remember me by name. We mix up our orders and ask for half half, which they are always happy to do. I used to go for the Large Roll ($10) but found I could never finish it so now I stick with the Medium Roll ($5) of half vegetable beef teriyaki and half avocado prawn tempura. Paired with their 'special sauce' and a dash or two of soy, it is hands down the best sushi I have ever had. I have also tried the Gyoza ($7) but as they are deep fried, I don't enjoy them as much as the Chinese steamed ones. I can't stress enough how lovely the staff are, always so friendly and genuinely happy to see you. There is some basic seating that spills into the courtyard, a great place to eat your lunch in the sun.
