Sutton's Farm is many more things than the orchard that started it all, also operating a juice factory, a cidery, liqueur distillery and the home style Shed Café.
The focus of the café's menu is local ingredients and simple, home style meals. The signature dish, which seems to be the immediate recommendation of any local within a 20km radius, is the apple pie. Sold by the slice, it is a generous portion of traditional apple pie, filled with apples from the farm, and served with cream and spiced apple cider ice cream made by Sutton's Farm. The pie is excellent, featuring a thin, yellow crust that's not buttery, but is still flaky and moist. The apple's are perfectly cooked, holding together nicely as you dig through the pie. The ice cream is a perfectly accompaniment of cinnamon and a slight cider kick, and I would recommend swapping the cream for a second scoop of the ice cream (why the ice cream is not sold by the box is beyond me). Neither the pie nor the ice cream are available as take-away, and given the generous serving of pie, it is best shared, or enjoyed after a very light lunch.
The coffee is made with Merlo beans and is not great, with my long black being quite bitter and ending in trail of coffee grounds. A glass of house-made cider of juice would be a better choice unless you're dying for caffeine. The apple juices are made from individual apple varieties (i.e., Pink Lady, Granny Smith, etc), and with a variety of other fruit additions (i.e., with strawberry). The cider comes in sweet and dry varieties, the latter being a good choice for those who like cider but find it too sweet. The cost of the meals and drinks is reasonable, even bordering on the cheap side.
The wait staff are friendly and attentive, without being overbearing, and service is quick. The decor of the café is very much in line the the name, with the space split equally between the café, and pallets of the Farm's wares ready for shipping. Despite clearly doubling as a shed, the space is clean and tidy, and the aesthetic adds to rather than detracting from the experience.
Definitely worth a visit for a slice of pie and a bottle of juice. read more
