For someone who avoids beaches as much as humanly possible, I have to admit, I didn't hate Suttons Beach. In fact, the experience was fairly pleasant.
Suttons Beach stretches forever around the Clontarf, Margate, Redcliffe area; you can park on the street that runs along the beach or if you're lucky enough to live locally, wander down onfoot.
This is a very family friendly environment. The waves are kid-sized, the sand is fairly clean, there are a multitude of picnic benches (some undercover), a clean and well maintained looking playground, a couple of rinse-down showers, some monkey trails on the red rock above, and heaps of space to lay out a bunch of towels on either sand or grass.
If you're looking for an intimate night-picnic on the beach, I've been assured it's perfectly do-able with some good lamp lighting and a homemade pie. If it is normally as windy as it was when I visited, though, you may still want to consider that not-quite-romantic windbreaker, or a camping light instead of candles.
The beach is monitored (at least where we were) by our SLS champions. I watched two of them from around 4pm, perched from my safety zone picnic bench, as they jovially attended to jellyfish stings, tourists wanting photos, curious kids, all while keeping their eyes on the water. They started packing up around 5.30-6pm, and headed to the clubhouse close by. There were still quite a few people when they left, though, and I'm not sure what time they start in the morning since we got there quite late.
There are shops further inward from where we were located, but when our hunter-gatherers returned with the fish and chips they'd ordered, they told us they'd gotten stopped a few times by visitors to the beach who wanted to know where they'd gotten the grub. Might be worth checking out how far the eateries are from where on the beach you're planning on plonking your bum. read more
