I've been going here on and off the last 5 years or so. The service is always prompt and professional. The owner is a former Marine like myself, a very down to earth and local feeling to it. I got a haircut today for a formal event by a newer barber there, one of the best haircuts I've got in a long time. Compared to the other barbers in the area, the price and quality given the comfort of the establishment are worth if you reside in Lakewood/Long Beach. read more

Had haircut today for first time in this barbershop ... older gentleman I assume is owner greeted me warmly and cut my hair practically exactly according to my instructions , and I was very happy with the result... I also like the ambiance of his shop, which was very tidy and full of cinematic memorabilia - fake or not - that gave the shop a very welcoming and nostalgic appeal... definitely would recommend this older barber to anyone, as he's very professional, unassuming, and engaging .., I will definitely make this place my regular hair shop read more

Tucked into a low-key shopping center (right next to a tasty Thai spot and a surprisingly friendly liquor store), Sutton's Barber Shop is a great local find. Took my 9-year-old for a cut--nothing fancy, just a trim on the sides--and the barber (wish I caught her name) was friendly, patient, and did a great job. Bonus points for being veteran-owned. It's got a chill vibe and feels like the kind of place you'll end up coming back to. TL;DR: Great local barbershop tucked next to good Thai food and a friendly liquor store. Never Again! An older gentleman cut my hair, maybe he was just counting away the minutes until 6pm or whatever but he totally messed up my cut. He didn't bother combing out my hair, he just cut according to how I had it combed and then proceeded to cut. When I got home and finished cleaning off the excess I noticed my hair was uneven all over the place; I mean c'mon you are a barber for crying out loud! How is it that this man has been cutting hair is beyond me. Well, lesson learned and I will not be spending my money on a half-assed haircut here. Do yourself a favor and go someplace else. Been taking my son and myself here for about 2 years now and everything is all good here! Barbers are all old timers that know what their doing and are fast and efficient. Oh the joys of finding a simply old-fashioned barber shop where you can enjoy good conversation while trimming that main of hair you've been sporting for the last few months. I found Suttons because it was close to my work. The owner, Jeff, is pretty awesome. He took me in 10 minutes to closing, and was very talkative the whole way through - because there's nothing worse than awkward barber shop silences. Anyway, Jeff seems to be pretty awesome - he's got tons of repeat customers and his employee even referred to him as uncle jeff ... though to be fair, it may have actually been his nephew. So yeah ... I was pleased with the haircut, and I enjoyed the company greatly. No complaints - I'll definitely be going back. Oh - keep in mind that they only accept cash! Stay Cheerful ;) read more

I can't believe this place has been so close to my home, but I only found out it existed today when Googling barbershops (not an every day occurrence). I drove by, and to my surprise, there it was: an old-fashioned barbershop, complete with barbers. Not knowing if they took plastic, I cruised by the nearby ATM and returned to find ample parking for my weekday 11:15am visit. There were two barbers working at the time, and both chairs were full, but the ambiance was welcoming enough that I didn't mind the 10-minute wait. The interior of this shop is just as it should be: classic barber chairs, single cushioned bench for waiting patrons, sports page from today's paper waiting for me, pail of Bazooka gum to reward the good kids, and the unmistakably clean smell of a barbershop. I know, "smell" shouldn't be important, but trust me, it is. Due to my lack of style and hair, I'm not accustomed to fancy haircuts. In fact, I usually go to a cosmetology school for my cuts. Needless to say, I'm never excited about my haircut. After all, "A #2 all the way around" isn't a technical cut. However, the cut I got was PERFECT. There were no mysterious leftover strands of hair standing tall above the rest. The cut was clean and uniform. The detail around the ears was perfect. So many times, female haircutters don't know to do the neck too. At Sutton's I got the old-fashioned warm shaving cream and straight razor back of the neck shave (guys, you know what I'm talking about). To top it all off, Murphy offered to do my eyebrows without my asking! $13.00 is more than what I paid for my last cut, but at Sutton's I was happy enough that it didn't matter. My only regret was the short tip I left (it was either $2.00 or $5.00, and I'm a cheapo). I will definitely be back to Sutton's. They gave me the best haircut I've had in many many years. read more

Suttons is one of those great throwback kind of Barber shops. Jeff, the owner, is a great barber and always filled with great conversation. I've been going there for years and never gotten a bad haircut. Suki is also great barber with lots of experience. She actually cut my hair 15 years ago. This shop was closed for months due to a tragic invent in which a drunk driver plowed into the shop and injured 2 Barbers. One, has still not recovered from his injuries. The shop was totaled. It has been reopened for months. Let's get the word out and get this great Barber shop going again! read more

I walked in on a Saturday morning a couple minutes to 8 a.m. waited about 5 minutes To be seen. Got a very clean low zero fade and was out the door by 8:19. I've been to this particular barber shop once before many years ago under the former owner and the name back then was Monarch Barber Shop. I rediscovered this barber shop because I spotted a $1 off coupon for a haircut from the Lakewood Community News publication (regular price $13). I took note of the address for the barber shop and realized that it was the old Monarch Barber Shop with the new name Sutton's Barber Shop. I went here today to get a haircut and made sure I brought my $1 off coupon. When I arrived, there were no customers there (I figured it was because this is Thanksgiving weekend and everyone was out at the mall shopping) and two of the barbers (a third one showed up later) were sitting there waiting for customers. The barber shop itself is a no-frills place inside with a few barber chairs, an old-fashioned cash register and some seating provided for customers to wait for the next available barber (which was not necessary today). They had music from an oldies station playing in the background. The guy who cut my hair was a younger guy who was very friendly (didn't get his name, though) and listened to how I wanted my hair cut. As he went about his business, I learned from him that he's from Huntington Beach and he is planning to move to Long Beach in the near future. Once he was done, he gave me a hand mirror to inspect his work. I was happy and he passed with flying colors as far as I was concerned. :-) What I like about this particular shop is that it's located about two miles from my home. The barber who worked on me was really friendly (and I assume the other two barbers are the same). I will definitely consider going back again. read more

This shop is a hidden gem. Not sure how long it's been around the the operators are born and raised in the area for 30+ years. All the barbers have been, and still are, performing their trade for 20+ years and it's shows. As a former Marine (If there is such a thing... Once a Marine, always a Marine), the Marine Corps posters and other jarhead (You better be one if you're going to call me one) goodness displayed at Sutton's made me feel right at home. Devil Dog presence aside, the you won't walk out looking like an active duty Marine unless, of course, that's what you want. I've had my hair cut by all three barbers at Sutton's without cause for complaint. They're all professionals who haven't, like some folks cutting hair at certain chains, who actually follow their customer's instructions. Sutton does a great job getting to know his clients and make them feel welcome in the shop by greeting most by name and picking up conversations where they left off the last time. I don't always get my hair cut when I should, but when I do, it's at Sutton's Barber Shop. read more

Reopened May 24 after being closed for 4 months because of an alcoholic driving THROUGH the front window. Plus they had to deal with the nonsense of asbestos removal because of floor tiles and popcorn ceiling. I stopped by during the week and spoke to Dick, he is an old time barber and being a person who has challenged hair I asked him if he could he help me. Dick without even a pause sad come in on Saturday and I will fixed you up. My old barber retired a couple of years ago and I have searching for a new person to take care of my hair needs for 2 years. So Dick cuts my hair without even a blink of his eye and I looked great, I could not believe my search was over. I only live a few blocks away and I am so happy to have found my new barber. This barbershop is a pretty cool spot with a nice very friendly environment. The owner cut my hair and was a very nice down to earth humble guy that knew how to do a fade. I really enjoyed the humor and the level of comfort he provides for his new/old customers. The barber took his time cutting my hair paying attention to details and making sure he didn't mess it up so make sure to go on a day when you are not constrained on time. Great shop, super friendly people and very skilled, too. Heard the owner ask the guy next to me about trimming his beard. The customer said the last barber shop he'd been to, he wasn't even asked, they just trimmed him. Mary did a great job. I'm a woman, with short hair, still want it to be stylish. Regular salons cost $60 for a hair cut when actually it's just a trim/clean up. Much more reasonable here. Give Sutton's a try. read more
