Our wedding was last weekend and I'm STILL getting rave reviews and basking in the glow of DJ Cody and Sutherland Entertainment. DJ Cody is an A++++++++. A lot of our guests were in the mood to 1. drink and 2. dance. Cody made sure that the dance floor was packed the entire night. Upon returning to work this week, my coworker (who attended our event) immediately said to me "Wedding was amazing! That DJ!!!" Most people say it's the best wedding dance floor they've ever been on. DJ Cody worked with us patiently and expertly throughout our planning process. He played songs perfectly throughout our ceremony (even cutting one track to make it flow better). He took requests, but filtered out the ones that wouldn't have made the party better. If you're getting married in the area, you need DJ Cody. It's that simple. read more

Spencer and his team were great to work with! We got married at Wente Vineyards this past December where Sutherland is a preferred vendor. Spencer was easy to work throughout the whole process. With the music he ensured we felt in control enough of the playlists and song selections while still providing feedback and suggestions given his experience. For the lighting we got married in a wine cave and the amber up lighting he suggested was beautiful and complemented the candlelight. And DJ Derek was fantastic at our wedding - we had a very intimate wedding and he read the crowd and had everyone dancing all night! Really glad we went with Sutherland Entertainment for our wedding. Prices were reasonable and Spencer was very responsive to questions via email. DJ Derek was our DJ and he was great -- professional, played all our requested songs, and spun a great mix. He made all the announcements we asked him to make but did not try to take over the show. (If you're looking for a more in-your-face DJ/MC presence, then you should probably specify that ahead of time. We had family members play that role for us so DJ Derek was perfect.) We picked Sutherland as a preferred vendor for the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco, and we definitely know why they're a preferred vendor. They were fantastic! We picked the platinum package and it was perfect for our needs. Spencer was quick with his responses, and the guitar player for our ceremony (Justin) and DJ and tech (Cody and Evan) for our reception were great. We gave our requests for the ceremony (our two processional songs were Somewhere over the Rainbow and Here Comes the Sun) and Justin played them beautifully, and tied them together so well. Before the event, I also filled out a form picking 50 of my "love" music and 25 "like" songs (as well as list songs that I absolutely didn't want played), and Cody played it all and mixed it so fantastically. Great sound quality and great lighting. Everyone was raving about the music all night! I had been on the fence before the event about whether we should've gone with the diamond package (includes a photobooth). I think that is absolutely a great choice, and I might add that if I had to do it all over again, but I also didn't feel like we were lacking anything in the party without it because the music kept everyone going all night and it was a fantastic party. We hired Sutherland Entertainment for our wedding and would recommend their services. David, a guitarist, provided beautiful music for our outdoor ceremony and even learned the specific song that I wanted for my walk down the aisle. The rest of the Sutherland team made sure that the sound was perfect for the ceremony and provided mics for the officiant and readers. For our reception, Sutherland provided fantastic, warm uplighting that worked well in our space. DJ Kevin controlled the music for the reception and did a good job. He played quite a few of the songs that we requested, but not a lot of them. In his defense, though, what he did play was a hit with the guests, which is probably why he is a DJ and I am not :). Overall, we had a great experience with Sutherland Entertainment. We found their pricing fair and Spencer, the owner, was very communicative and thorough to ensure that our day went smoothly. read more

I worked with Spencer to arrange mic service and have Justin play guitar for our outdoor ceremony. Communication before the event was professional and Spencer's replies to my emails were prompt. They also were responsive to our wedding coordinator which was great. For the day of the ceremony, Justin set up mic service in a timely manner which was important as we had a very short time for set up. He played guitar beautifully and on cue. Spencer played music and was the DJ for our recent wedding in Menlo Park. He is a talented guitar player and was flexible with the sound restrictions on location. However we found him to be somewhat unresponsive, presumably bc it's the middle of wedding season, but that's not a really good reason. Also while he did play most of the songs we requested, he demonstrated some inflexibility about our must-plays when he stated via email that he couldn't guarantee he would play them depending on the mood of the party. My cousin said that many of the songs I'd requested he didn't have and he used her iPod to play them. Overall he did well but perhaps has some growing to do in the customer service end of his business. read more

Guys. I cannot recommend Sutherland Entertainment strongly enough. Spencer and our audio technician were truly a joy to work with and made our wedding. Music is super important to us, so audio quality at our wedding was crucial, but we had our wedding at a park in Oakland (Roberts Regional Recreation Area) that does not allow generators. No problem for Sutherland Entertainment! They set up speakers both at our ceremony and reception site, miked up our officiant, and provided mikes for us for our vows and for our toasts. Spencer also worked with us to ensure that we could create our own playlists and they would play as we wanted them to. Everything went off without a hitch, and the sound was excellent, which was super impressive regardless - I've been to weddings at established wedding venues with permanent audio staff where they've had audio issues - but especially impressive considering the venue and site limitations. Not to mention, our venue was up a hill with no real car access - they made it work and did not once complain (which is more than we can say for our wedding coordinator, but that's for another review). TLDR: Hire Sutherland Entertainment for your event, you will not be disappointed. We will definitely use them again! read more

My wedding coordinator, Adrienne from Tickled Events, found Spencer through Craigslist. Best yet, was that he was a 2-fer! We booked him as our ceremony guitarist and reception DJ! (Totally awesome!) When my husband and I met with him, he was very thorough and easy-going. He made sure that our music was personalized to us. His planner and song request list on his website is very easy to use and very detailed. I had requested my friend to sing the father/daughter dance song and my brother to perform a couple of songs and Spencer worked with them, making sure they had everything they needed for their performances. I told him that the age range of our guests were from 13 - 70 and he was able to select music for all to enjoy. The ceremonial music was absolutely beautiful and the reception music was exceptional! Definitely well worth the package. His talent and skills are just amazing. I recommend Sutherland Entertainment for the convenience of any of your event's/party's music needs. read more

We hired Spencer for our wedding in August 2010. From the moment I first spoke to Spencer, I knew he'd be the one we'd hire to DJ at our wedding. He is so cool and laid back. He listens and makes suggestions accordingly, helping the planning come together smoothly. He is super professional and very kind. Spencer is also a great guitar player. We had the GOLD DELUXE package. Our guest enjoyed live guitar during cocktail hour. As a DJ, Spencer totally knows how to play the crowd and makes sure everyone is having a good time. The best moment of the night, was indeed the soul train line. My brother coordinated it with Spencer and the music included all the major classic party hits (THRILLER, et al). Absolutely everyone went down the soul train line at least once and there were of course, the repeat offenders :) It was the most fun EVER! Additionally, Spencer made our ceremony feel like we wanted, intimate and personal. He customized the music and played the songs we asked for the procession and recession and help us with the music in between. Personally, I couldn't have done without Spencer. He helped me with my VOW song ... I'm not a singer but wanted to sign a song to my husband that I always sing to him, that reflects how I feel about him. Spencer help me practice and also helped my bridesmaids by teaching them the clapping in the song. It was HUGE success. He totally me sound great; my husband loved it and so did our guests. Spencer helped us make our wedding reflect who we are as a couple and that is what we liked the most about Spencer. He totally got us. Our guests are still talking about how much they had at our wedding and Spencer had a lot to do with that. read more

Sutherland was an amazing DJ! We found him on Yelp and I was so impressed with his website. Once we booked him we were able to plan the timeline of the wedding and all the music through his website. For our ceremony he played guitar and that was absolutely beautiful. He did such a great job of keeping to the timeline and what impressed me most was that he didn't play any of the songs that I put on the do-not play list even though I know they were requested. That was very important to me. After the wedding I had so much positive feedback on what a great DJ we had picked and so many thought the guitar was such a unique touch to the ceremony. I just had my wedding with 9/5/15 and booked my guitarist and DJ through Sutherland Entertainment. My guitarist was Justin Houchin and my DJ for the evening was DJ Von. Justin was absolutely amazing and very easy to work with. He played the guitar beautifully and helped guide us to picking the best selection of music for the ceremony. DJ Von was the absolute best wedding DJ ever. Our number one goal for our reception was to get everyone on the dance floor and keep them there and DJ Von did just that. He knows how to read the crowd and play the right music at the right time. His MC-ing is super casual and flows incredibly well with the event. He was extremely helpful during the planning process, very responsive, and made the entire experience so easy. His music selection was perfect - great mix of oldies, trendy music, and a lot of awesome remixes. I highly recommend working with him - it'll be one of the best decisions you make while planning your event or wedding. Overall my experience with Sutherland Entertainment was the best. We got married at the Headlands Center for the Arts and Spencer of Sutherland Entertainment was one of their recommended vendors. I spoke with a different DJ before deciding on Sutherland Entertainment for a few reasons. Firstly, he had a discounted package for the Headlands which included everything we needed, including sound in several different locations and music in the bathroom! The other DJ I spoke with didn't have any experience with the venue, and would have been significantly more expensive because we would have had to pay for everything separately. Secondly, after speaking with Spencer on the phone, I felt completely confident that our wedding would be in good hands...He recommended DJ Cody for our wedding and gave me a run through of how everything would go on our wedding day. He also gave us some different options and helped us decide what would work best for us. One of the options that was offered was to have his team take care of the lighting at the venue. We opted to have them hang bistro lights which looked charming and saved us a lot of time before and after the wedding by not having to do it ourselves! On the day of the wedding DJ Cody was very polite, helpful and professional. Spencer had an option to have acoustic guitar music played during the ceremony, but I really wanted my brother to play the music for our ceremony. Spencer assured me this was no problem, and Cody helped my brother get set up and plugged into his sound system. It was amazing and so personal for me to have my family involved, and I really appreciated their help in making this happen. The music at dinner was perfect, it was loud enough that you could hear it, but not so loud you had to shout to talk over it. He had a "Headlands dinner mix" that was perfect for our venue. I gave Spencer a huge list of songs that my husband and I liked but told him that DJ Cody could pick and choose and just do his thing. I was worried that a lot of our guests wouldn't dance, but was surprised at how many people were on the floor! Of course it made it that much more fun to hear my jams sprinkled in between his choices! The hubs and I like all kinds of music, and DJ Cody was really good about playing a little bit of everything...there was something for everyone! Spencer did a wonderful job as DJ at our wedding in October 2011. The music during dinner was exactly what we wanted and the dance floor was packed for the whole night! We received so many compliments and were so happy to have a DJ that was very talented at mixing a variety of songs and creating a great atmosphere (and no cheesy games/commentary!). I loved that he listened and incorporated all of our requests. One note-- I'm so glad I read Elizabeth's review, because at times Spencer was slow to respond, which made us nervous- but he exceeded our expectations on the night! Spencer was on the preferred vendor list for the Headlands Center, and after getting a good vibe from his website, we scheduled a phonecall. We liked how knowledgeable he was, especially about the Ins and outs of our unique, old, acoustically challenging venue. We booked him and didn't actually meet him in person until a couple weeks before our wedding, when we heard him play the piece of music he learned for our ceremony. It hit me that I had never met him in person and what if things weren't as they seemed? Well, I had nothing to worry about as he was calming, kind and personable from the moment we walked into his studio. He is a very talented guitar player, skilled in classical, bossa nova, flamenco and more. On the day of the wedding, he and his assistant were so efficient and professional. I didn't worry about a thing. He MC'ed our night without a hitch (pronouncing the myriad of complicated names in our wedding party perfectly) and calmed my fears about throwing a dance party for all my nearest and dearest. My mother, who hasn't danced in years, was on the floor all night. There were soul trains and conga lines and break dancers. It was bananas and so much fun. He walked the fine line between "family event" and "awesome dance party" and the floor was full the whole night. Pro Tip: get the lights. I thought "who needs lights" because I was clueless, but was so glad we went for them. It adds a mood, warmth, a glow, and will add to the comfort your guests have as they hit the floor. Trust me!! Spencer was recommended to us by our venue and after just one meeting, we knew why: he's incredibly talented, genuinely passionate about what he does, and a pleasure to work with. He talked to us about our likes and dislikes, listened to us about the kind of wedding we wanted, and gave us amazing guidance about how to make it happen. My fiancee and I both care about music and wanted what was played at the wedding to reflect our taste; Spencer totally understood where we were coming from and made some great suggestions about how to incorporate what we wanted while still keeping the party going (he's great at feeling out the crowd and playing just the right song to get people on the dance floor). Spencer is one phenomenal Musician! When you are getting married the things that you want in a DJ are not just his great musical talents but also his professionalism. Spencer does both amazingly well. Our wedding was in Napa at a resort that Spencer had never performed at, and on top of that the ceremony was suppose to take place outdoors but it rained and we had to move it inside. It didn't matter one bit for Spencer. He had no issues with setting up in the unfamiliar setting nor did he have a problem changing plans and going with the flow. Our wedding was amazing and we owe a lot of that to Spencer. We told him what we wanted and didn't want....he put it together in a smooth and fun way. His guitar playing was beautiful and we had so many compliments on the ceremony and cocktail hour music. Also, I have never been to a wedding where the second the first dance song came on everyone was on the dance floor and never left. He did an extrodinary job and I will highly recommend him for any event. Not to mention that while in the planning stages he made it so easy....almost too easy :) He takes the worry out of planning for the bride and groom. Once you hire him you can check that off your list and not have to worry about it again. He will show up on time be incredibly professional and do an outstanding job!
