Terrible experience at Sussie's. I was turned away by the doorman on my wedding day, despite having been admitted multiple times before under the exact same circumstances and with the exact same ID. My issue is not that he enforced a rule; it is the complete inconsistency in how that rule is applied. He was also rude, condescending, and treated me as though I were stupid while I tried to explain that this had never been an issue there before. Had I known the policy would suddenly be enforced differently, I would have come prepared. Honestly, it sounds like I did not miss much. According to friends who were already inside, the atmosphere that night was not great anyway. Treating a returning customer this way, especially on such an important night, was the final straw. My 35 guests and I left and took our business elsewhere, where the service was excellent and we ended up having a lovely night. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Historic no-frills bar on Calistoga's main drag. The sign caught my eye because Susie is my sister's name. Founded in 1944, this is one of the first bars to receive a liquor license after prohibition. We had some time to kill before dinner so decided to step in for a drink. The initial narrow hallway belied its expansive two-level interior, which had pool tables, tvs, internet jukebox and a Photo Booth (of which we took advantage). The local hangout specializes in ... I'm not sure. The best drink on the menu? Dunno. The ambiance? Rather unique. I don't see how you avoid this place if you are looking for a changeup from wines. Step into Susie's for an Old Fashioned to get a break from all the wonderful wine tasting you've done and map out the rest of your Calistoga weekend over a second cocktail as you walk to your eventual dinner plans. elly was the bartender on the day of my visit. loved that she greeted me when sat down but she spent about 5 mins with the regulars sitting close by trying to decide what their next drink would be. could have asked what i wanted and opened a bottle quickly. served my beer(s) politely but zero conversation after that. young lady in her early twenties hasn't learned that she needs to be personable and friendly to engage customers, spend more money and end up with more tip money. read more

Really bummed, we heard it's a great hang and out of the wine hustle. We came in late afternoon, the bar was full and none of tables had people sitting at them. My wife and I sat down, made eye contact with the bartender smiled and she just turned her head. No biggie, then she picked up her drink and just flat there and sipped it. I walked in and was trying to transfer my ID from my purse to an evening bag (was with a wedding party) the boxed blonde lady bartender was with caked eye makeup said "don't make me chase you out of the bar" and practically spit in my face. We are on a 17 day road trip for our 30th anniversary. Calistoga is our 4th stop and found a lovely place to stay. We were in search of finding a little home town, genuine little bar. We found that right here at Susies! We had lunch across the street and were searching for it and boom right across the street! From the time you walk in you're literally feeling "at home". Elle welcomed us right away ( the bartender) great conversation, great ideas for us to continue our trip. Lots of regulars here and just a gem of a place. This is for sure a place that you MUST stop at , even if you're all about the wine in wine country lol. Best place so far in our trip! Thanks for being home when away from home! Another terrible review for the haggard blonde bartender in her 40s! Based on the other reviews, she seems like a miserable human being and should be fired.... she's a straight up RACIST! Asians beware! My boyfriend and I were playing pool and the bartender walks up from behind the bar TO US, in spite of the bar being busy, and asks for my ID. (I was baffled cuz sadly, I will admit, I ain't no spring chicken and look well over 18 lol. And also, bartenders usually don't go around policing for ID's). Anyways, I didn't have my ID cuz I felt lazy and didn't feel like carrying my purse so I showed her a picture of my ID on my phone. She said nope, that won't work and then called over the bouncer and then kicked us out! I get that I should have had my ID, but she singled me out and didn't check anyone else's ID! In the time my bf was downing his drink before leaving, I noticed a group of white girls go up to the bar and the bartender didn't check their ID's. Other people went up to get drinks...and nope, she didn't ask for their ID's. And yep, they were all white. Yeah, not good. Went in around 5ish for a couple drinks. I just moved back to Calistoga after being away for 15 years, and it's not nearly the sweet little town I loved (I guess wine tourists ruined it maybe?). IDK, but no bartender for 10 minutes, and when she finally got there I laughed and said "oh good, someone is here" and the response was "I'm entitled to a four minute break." I'm a labor organizer and I agree-- she is absolutely entitled to that. As a customer, though, someone should have been tending bar, or there should be a "back in 5" sign up or something. I got a top-shelf Cosmo, and when I ordered the second one she used the same glass. Rude, nasty, unsanitary-- there are decent dive bars. Not this one! read more

Semi-dive bar with high end liquor. We enter through the single door and down the narrow hallway that opened up into a decent size bar. BF noticed a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle on the shelf. He's be looking for this for years. Ordered up a shot and now it's off his whiskey bucket list. There is a small food selection under $10, but we did not eat. Drink prices are fair. read more

From the ceiling hangs all the refuse from 2004's Cinco De Mayo - Corona streamers, Budweiser flags, posters of Dale Jr. All barstool stares are on the trumpery paintings behind the bar - portraits of yesteryear's Calistoga race car drivers - their smiles still excited to be in their little stock cars, the helmets as round as over-inflated beach balls with proud black stripes down the center. Someone asks the bartender, "They still race those cars at the fairgrounds on Sundays?" "I nuh know." The usual domestics are in the bottle. Lagunita's are in the cooler somewhere if you ask like you don't think the swill everyone else is drinking is inferior, pal. The Coors bottles are in full supply for the pool players - minding their own business, occasionally dipping out the backdoor for a smoke. Wonderful and charming bar in Calistoga (FYI it's the only "bar" in Calistoga proper). This place is always busy and always fun. They have a juke box, pool tables, and a full bar (no food). It was recently renovated so the "dive-bar" element has been replaced with just a cool country bar spot. Authentic exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and nice color lights behind the bar wall of liquor. A few high tables and a long bar made of an ancient redwood. Since Susie's is the only real bar in town, many people end up here after their day of wine tasting, or dinner out, or even a wedding. In addition, you will probably see some Napa locals here. The result is a nice eclectic mix of people. Something neat, that some may not know about, is that the bar also offers craft cocktails. Yes, they have all of the regular drink options....but they also make special and unique drinks and have seasonal drinks. Some of their special drinks even come in special glasses that take you back to the Prohibition Era. They do martinis with foam, tequila infused with various natural flavors such as dark cherry infused tequila aged in an oak wine barrel. Be sure to ask about their latest creations because there is always something fun and new to try. Another cool feature is that you can order nice champagne and even order the entire bottle. Their bottle of Schramsburg is offered at a better price than any other spot in the area. Very reasonable. Another cool feature is that they have some very special liquor options available. For an obvious added cost, you can order some of the best liquors on the market. If you are excited to do a tasting, and try something special, this is your spot. read more

Nothing about this place says "Come in, you're welcome here." It's small, dark door nearly hidden barely informs you of this bar's existence. If you dare, open the door, walk down the long hall, and find yourself immersed in a group of locals. There are no tourists here. Saunter up to the bar and the pretty, saucy bartender named Fawn will insult you and bring you a beer when she feels like it. Somehow you'll appreciate that she deemed you worthy of that beer. Stick around, ditch any attitude you may have, and you'll end up slowly merging with the locals. Humility is key here, as is cash. In fact, Susie's is a cash only bar, whether you like it or not. At the end of the night, you might find that Fawn accepts your presence. She has a wry wit hiding a fun-loving smile. If you are really nice, she may kiss your boyfriend goodbye. Apparently I'm really nice. I'm also a glutton for punishment. We went back for a second night. In short, this is where the locals go to escape tourists.
