This is possibly my favourite sushi place in Kingston. I like Sima, but the crowded seating was getting too uncomfortable. So I decided to try Sushi Ya across the street, and I'm so glad I did! The restaurant was clean and well decorated. Servers were nice and took good care of us. The small sashimi party platter was the perfect amount for two people, and I enjoyed the diverse selection of fish presented. Quaint little sushi spot at the end of Princess Street close to the waterfront. Probably about a dozen tables? Not a whole lot to set them apart from other sushi places, all the standard rolls that you would expect as well as bento boxes and specialty rolls. What we did notice is that the entrees do not come with the complementary miso soup or salad. You just get the meal you ordered, Service was attentive but that might have been that there was only one other table other than ours. read more

Chicken Teriyaki First of all, this doesn't even look appetizing....the taste is way too sweet and the chicken is kind of chewy in texture. Not to mention, it's freaking warm....shouldn't it at least be hot? I m not even asking for it to be sizzling. Oh, by the way, the hot tea is 3 dollars per person. As visitors to Kingston and often on the hunt for sushi, we decided to try Sushiya Zen at about 7-7:30pm. It was a Saturday night and crowded which seemed like a good sign. Instead of waiting for a table, we sat at the sushi bar. Service was smooth and our server was nice and helpful; however, our food took far too long to arrive. I think we ate around 8:30-9:00pm. Our guess is that there was some kind of mix up with another table with a large order causing a bit of a back log. If you have a taste for deep fried shrimp or tempura bits or cream cheese in your sushi rolls, this is the place to go. If you are more inclined to eat sashimi or more classic, simple rolls, this probably isn't the place for you. We ordered some sashimi that probably wasn't ordered much (e.g. Saba) and those seem to have not been as fresh. The unagi nigiri sushi was delicious as was the simple avocado and unagi roll. (Thank goodness the chef didn't add sauce to the roll as many do.) The seasoned rice was particularly good; well proportioned and not overcooked. So, if you eat raw fish and love salmon or tuna and love more "modern" sushi rolls, this is a great option for you. Sitting at the bar was nice and quiet. The audio/noise level was great for conversation; no loud talkers that night. Also, there are only 4 seats so it can be a tight fit if all are taken. Gluten intolerant or people with Celiac, many of the rolls have tempura bits mixed in; not sure if they can make without but a heads up. Remember that soy sauce has gluten too. PS: We hear the stone pot bibimbap is delicious from students who were sitting near us. Perhaps this is the place to try for Korean next time. read more

I went there last night and sat at one of the tables in front of the windows, watching the snowstorm roll in. Awesome experience. I was so pleasantly surprised with the quality of everything. The establishment was clean and quaint, more of a low-key spot than anything. Our server was polite, attentive without being intrusive, and pleasant to be around. She was also quick on the water refills; I tend to drink a gallon of water every time I go for sushi, so having my glass topped up is weirdly important for me. Prices are on par with a lot of other places, but here the special rolls come with 10 pieces rather than 8, so we felt like we were getting a bit of a deal. Maybe that's a thing. Maybe I just need to try more sushi places. The horror. I ordered a Combo B, which came with two special rolls and a miso soup for $21.99. I chose their Philadelphia roll and the Snow King (I believe?), and they were both awesome. I liked they that were a little on the thin side as far as rolls go, but you didn't lose out on filling density. Both my rolls were delicious. My man had the White Dragon roll and the Philadelphia, and the White Dragon was really good. We will most definitely be back for special occasions and recommending it to friends! read more

Okay....keep in mind it is Kingston and sushi around these parts is never spectacular. But Sushi Ya is a surprisingly good "roll expert" as advertised. The red dragon roll, rainbow roll and princess roll (served a fire lit plate) are solid, with creative flavor accents and balanced construction (the most important aspect of good maki) So I would give it a try and see if you like it. read more

This is definitely the best sushi in Kingston, without a doubt. Everything is super fresh and carefully assembled, and the soy sauce is brewed on site. Delivery tends to be pretty fast most nights. The portions tend to be generous and reasonably priced. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because when I have eaten in the dining room (which has only been once or twice), the service has been excruciatingly slow. read more

Good miso soup, generous and actually worth the price avocado salad with lots of veggies, and our platters were delicious, fresh and had exceptional variety as well as good portion sizes! I'm travelling a lot in Canada and about four years ago I discover this place... Every time I get to pass by Kingston I need to stop by this place... I'm a sushi lover and this place is definitely one of the best if not the best place for rolls... A real expert so don't be shy and go for any of their special roll... I've been to other sushi restaurants (Sima, Oh my Sushi, Kame, etc) but this one is my favourite. First, the service is amazing. They are so friendly and not in an insincere way either. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable. The food is fresh and tasty. If you ever leave a restaurant feeling heavy and kinda gross after the meal - you won't experience that here. I feel leaving full, satisfied and planning my next visit back. I've tried the udon and various rolls, you can't go wrong! I will say that I've had better mochi ice cream elsewhere, but that's my only complaint! You won't be disappointed here! read more

Best kamja tang for miles around! After a recommendation by the Korean woman who sells kimchi at the farmer's market, came here on a mission to find pork bone soup. Quite spicy--a bit overpowering-- and complimented by rice and 3 kimchi sides. The portion was larger than others I've tried, probably even enough for a Korean wrestler. Delicious sushi, for decent prices... if you like spicy tuna rolls then order mt. Tuna for a delicious spicy tuna roll. The seating is limited as it is a small location. i think it was more like 4 star in terms of food taste however we felt portions were a little smaller then usual. drinks were too pricey service was a little slow we took 5 rolls, bogulgi dish (very small portion as well )3 beers, glass of wine and small sake $150 was a little up there. but the food tasted good and fresh we are used to larger portions (as in larger sushi pieces with 8 pcs and not 6!) read more

Best sushi in the city! Fresh, fast, full of flavour and variety. This is a unique spot, fun and quirky decorations. They sometimes play Christmas tunes in July. Pleasant and amiable staff. There are many sushi restaurants in Kingston, but this one takes the cake for delicious food for a great price. Definitely give this place a try! read more
