I eat a lot of sushi, I thought I would premise my review. And of course taste is subjective, so this is just based on my personal taste. I ordered a lunch sushi, made up of nigiri sushi and spicy salmon rolls, salad and miso soup. The miso soup tasted different, not one of the better miso soup I have had. The salad, just run-of-the-mill, including the dressing. The Nigiri sushi was good, that's the only thing I had to order again. The spicy salmon rolls, weird taste to them, sure it's nothing bad and maybe some people would prefer it but I didn't like it as much as from other places. The service was quick. read more

Favorite sushi spot in Kingston. Yes the service can be a little slow (they have one chef making the rolls), but I don't mind because you can tell the chef cares about what he's preparing, and takes his time to craft it carefully. The presentation is always beautiful. Sometimes we begin with vegetable tempura, which is tasty. Sometimes we even get a complimentary appetizer of creamy rice soup. We order the dynamite roll and the golden california roll, and sometimes the spider roll. The rolls are heavenly. I was recently dragged to one of those "all you can eat" sushi places, and holy moly was the sushi terrible. I appreciate Akira so much more now that I've tasted cheap sushi where the chef doesn't care about quality, only quantity. Having dinner at this restaurant thanks to fellow yelpers... Found this place on my way to Ottawa from Toronto.... Nice small establishment... Good food at decent price... We ordered seafood udon noodles and sushi dinner which were presented very nicely and inviting... Sushi was really well made with healthy fish portions and not like places where you get tiny sliver of fish along with whole lot of rice.... Udon noodles came with all sorts of seafood.. Clams, crab meat, squid etc... The portion was quite sumptuous and my wife couldn't get through whole of it... Overall a very nice meal on the road... read more

Ordered: Spicy Tuna Sashimi salad, was great good taste, fair portions just wish it had REAL crab meat instead of artificial Deep fried soft shell crab roll was awesome presentation tasted great as well, yelp picture is from me! only thing I noticed was rice wasn't correct (didn't contain enough rice vinegar and sugar) seemed like plain rice BiBimBap this is actually a korean dish on their menu, served in a hot stone bowl. Seeing as how we're both not food court people, we brought up Yelp and this came up as one of the top results. Seeing as how we're both Japanese food fanatics, we decided to try this place out. We were the only ones there throughout the whole time, between 2 and 2:40pm. I had the sashimi bento lunch special, while my friend had the spicy chicken bento lunch special. The lunch special came with a miso soup, potato tempura, and a salad. The miso soup was probably the biggest disappointment out of the food, as there was only the soup but no seaweed or onions. On the other hand, the presentation for the bento box was definitely top notch. The sashimi was excellent for a place like Kingston. I've had better in a few places (the red snapper was quite hard), but if I ever end up in Kingston again and am craving Japanese food I definitely wouldn't hesitate coming back here. The salad and tempura were both very good, with a nice touch to the bento box. This place would get a solid 4 if either the miso soup is improved or they improve their red snapper sashimi. Otherwise, for a place like Kingston, this is an excellent Japanese restaurant. read more

Stopped in to try Akira. Nothing to look at from the outside strip mall location. Inside a bit better. Kind of a loud room when there is a large group but no worse than a lot of places. Service was fast and efficient enough. A bit of a wait for the check though. Shared the "Love Boat" which was enough food for two people and came with miso soup and a salad. At $45.00 was fairly priced I suppose. Some limited substitutions available on the assortment. We enjoyed the food. Rolls were nothing special but the sashimi was good, particularly the butterfish. Would return if I was in Kingston and looking for Japanese food. read more

Are usually quite enjoy sushi but I was very impressed with this one! Upon first seeing the exterior of the restaurant from the parking lot I could say that was nothing in unremarkable. Inside this humble establishment the decor was pleasantly moderate . The welcome was quite friendly. We ordered the love boat and Gypsy. The love boat is mixed sushi and sashimi and was delicious. The fish was thickly sliced and was fresh and tender. It was quite delicious. The gyoza were good and the Jamaican sushi was so so tasty !! read more

This restaurant was a fantastic surprise. Driving to Montreal, we were passing Kingston around lunch time and with grumbling bellies. A quick search on Yelp told me that I could find sushi right off the highway. We were actually shocked. Being from Toronto and Markham, with one of us having lived in Japan, we are eating sushi on a regular basis. The food here was fantastic. The Agedashi tofu was OUTSTANDING and the best I have ever had. Bonito flakes and all. The fish was all very fresh, and the bentos of good value. Very impressed, will be back for certain. read more

After 2 years of waiting, we finally made it to this restaurant. The first thing we had was tempura. So if you've had tempura and you thought it was pretty good, well, think again. Was your tempura soggy and not crispy (yes, this could be called soggy)? Well, not this place! I'm told the secret is to use fresh oil. Shame on you who do not use fresh oil! The next item we had was grilled hamachi neck that was sooo good! Tender, flaky, and delicious. Then came the rolls. First it was the spider roll complete with deep fried soft shell crab. The pictures will say it all. The next roll that came was the kamikaze roll. The salmon, tuna, avocado, and cucumber were all fresh with the spicy sauce and tempura flakes sprinkled all over the plate. The third and final roll was a green dragon roll. The shrimp tempura and avocado inside topped with thinly sliced avocado. In general, the presentation is spectacular. You can see that there is a lot of skill and experience that goes into the creation of these rolls. Also, there is no skimping on the ingredients. The rolls are tightly packed and dense. Cannot complain one bit about the rolls. The final part of our meal was a combination plate of sashimi and sushi. You name it, it was on it. Tuna, white tuna, salmon, hamachi, sprinkled with gold flakes. The sashimi was out of this world. Nothing had a fishy taste and I could keep eating it until they had none left in the fridge. My dad had vegetable udon and it was also up to the standard of everything else. Prices seem pretty average (at least in comparison to California). All in all, this was a great experience. The service was top notch and always with a smile. The food was prepared quickly with care and delivered flawlessly. If I lived anywhere near this restaurant, I'd be here at least once a week. read more

I lived in Kingston for 3 years and I loved this place. Hands down the best sushi in Kingston. Sushi in Kingston can be dodgy and they are springing up everywhere but Akira stands above them all. Lots of care put into all the dishes and we ate there often enough to judge the quality and consistency. Great tempura, fish was always fresh and probably one of the best spicy tuna rolls I've tried. Also, try the kamakazie roll or the spider roll. Great presentation and flavour. I miss this place since leaving Kingston but definitely worth a visit. read more

We stopped here on our way back to Toronto. Very good sushi! I ordered the yam sushi and the 'Jamaican' sushi which had mango, avocado, and red pepper. Both were very good but the yam was my favourite! My hubby ordered the chicken teriyaki and he also enjoyed it a lot. Will try to stop here again when I go past Kingston again. If you live in the West End (the suburbs of Ktown) then this is your local haunt! Coming from Markham, ON--where the majority of the population is Asian--I have a familiarity with maki, sashimi, sushi and other Japanese delights. Needless to say I was more than a little hesitant about trying sushi in Kingston. But I was more than satisfied. The spider roll was to die for, with a collection of deep-fried eel on the side and a presentation of top-notch quality. But if you must try any one of their spectacular rolls make it the deep-fried California roll; this is quite possibly the equivalent of a food orgasm! Deeelicious! The dynamite roll was also good and the spicy salmon assortment was mouthwatering-ly delightful! I ordered the Beef Teriyaki this evening, and it was, by far, the worst meal I've ever had. The meat was a very poor cut of meat, full of gristle and fat, and to add insult to injury, served nearly RAW. The meat was red, not even a pink. Most of it went back to the kitchen, uneaten. I wouldn't even feed my dog the quality of meat that was served to me. Shame on them for serving such low quality food. NEVER AGAIN. read more

We ordered sashimi dinner with salmon roll and sashimi dinner with tuna roll. They were really over priced especially for how bad they were. Pieces of fish are still frozen and taste like the refrigerator. The rolls were basically giant chunks of rice with mashed up fish inside. They taste like nothing but sea weed. All cut in different sizes ...some too big they can't fit in my mouth. The server charged us a for a cut of tasteless tea and never came back to ask us if we need water. They only had one chef and one server, our order took for ever. I don't know if this was a particular bad experience or maybe we are just being picky. However we will not come back again. read more

Delicious sushi across the board. The server was very polite too. The only downside, like some reviewers have mentioned, is that it takes a while to get your food. The owners know us and welcome us like family each time we enter. I don't think they ever forget a face. The food is simply amazing and the service as well. The sushi is always so fresh and tasty, noodles are perfect each time and udon mmmmmm the udon. Great Sake selection too. I won't complain about the prices because it is after all really good food, and really good quality fish (that I have experienced). I give it 10s all around. The best sushi I've had in Kingston, hands down. In terms of taste and presentation, it's miles ahead of other restaurants I've been to in the city. Actually, the presentation - as other reviewers have mentioned - is really out of this world. It's interesting and exciting, but not tacky. Nor does it get in the way of the flavours or the enjoyment the meal. Definitely something to experience. For those reasons, if I had to pick a restaurant for a sushi date, this would be the one. Great food, fun experience, and a nice atmosphere (it has some surprisingly comfy and classy nooks) make it a really good choice. Overall: Don't be dissuaded by the location - If this place was in the downtown core, it would be destroying the competition in terms of quality and presentation. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Located in an unassuming strip mall in a northern suburb of town....absolutely delicious. Authentic Japanese at very low prices. Four of us had a monster of a meal for $60, tip included. Each guest is greeted and sent off with a friendly wave from the head chef! The presentation of the food was also impressive: they used shrimp tails for dragon heads and green onions for eyes on our rolls. That was cute. If you're driving through Kingston, its very close to the highway and well worth the stop. read more

This place is GREAT. We ordered 4 sushi rolls and a veggi udon and we were completely full. All the rolls were absolutely amazing and it was BIG. I could barely fit one in my mouth. Also, it was a perfect balance of rice and other ingredients. The udon wasn't the best one I've had but it was still okay. The sushi covers for the udon anyway. Tried Akira for a Valentine's lunch. Very pleased with the freshness of the fish, my husband considered it the best in town (he is used to Vancouver sushi). Appetizing presentation! Japanese owner! Authentic sushi! Real Japanese sushi is when the piece of fish on top is long and drapes way off the rice. This sushi draped. The salmon and tuna was fresh tasting and flavourful. Kamikaze roll was excellent... a combo of spicy crispy salmon and tuna. The tuna handroll overflowed generously with tuna meat... probably the best bang for your buck out of the different styles. I wasn't expecting such good sushi in Kingston. I've been slowly trying to become more adventurous. This place is incredible. I loved the sushi, loved the teriyaki and the salad and soup at the start was so dang good that I wanted to lick my plate to get all the dressing off of it. As I now live downtown, for a while I stopped going to Akira but now I make the trip. Akira, is in my experience the best sushi place in town. It is a hidden gem. Try the hand rolled spicy salmon or the pink dragon. Not into sushi try the kalbe bento. The main selection is always very fresh and of great quality. It might be a couple of dollars more than some other places but when it comes to sushi you don't go for the bargain stuff. If you are a fan of sushi, this is a spot you should try.
