Took a while to get seated. I guess that's because it's so good. The sushi is very nice and not to expensive. You can even order what you want them to make. Highly recommended.

What a find this place is and it is conveniently located across the road from central station! We arrived for dinner at 7pm and took up a seat around the train where you can watch the dishes being made before your eyes. All of the sushi items from the train are a work of art, and we recommend ordering the mixed plate which has everything from crystal bay prawn to wagyu beef to sea-eel sushi. These were delicately presented and each had a unique taste that left you wanting more! The sea eel sushi is the owners favourite and once you taste it you will see why. Make sure you order some of the other dishes outside of the sushi and sashimi offerings. The cold soba and salmon bowl and the beef tataki were standouts but if you are a tofu fan do not go past the agedashi tofu. For those that want something a little more adventurous try the steamed egg custard with prawn and soybean - a truly unique dish. The staff are extremely friendly and be sure to chat to the amazing chef as you watch him work his magic to create these delightful dishes. The prices are much cheaper than what you would expect! You will soon add gou sushi to your list of go to places, just like we have!

Gou Sushi is more than just your average sushi train…read more The food was all prepared to a high standard, each shining in its own way: - Spicy Karage Chicken: this was perfectly fried, to retain moisture and had a great kick! - Sashimi Platter: with choice cuts of Salmon, Tuna, White Fish and Scallop, these were perfect cuts of fish, fatty and delicious! These were served with some fresh wasabi and ginger. - Agedashi Tofu: fried silken tofu served with an umami tsuyu sauce! We were greeted by the lovely Fan who asked us about our food preferences and pointed out some of the popular dishes on the menu. She also suggested some awesome Sake choices, while also educating us on some of the finer points of taste and the process of making it!

With the option to dine in or take away. Three of us dined here last night for a total of $46 which included three entrees and two freshly prepared sushi rolls. This was plenty of food to satisfy our hungry bellies. I'm becoming a bit of a regular here and often go for the Bento Box or meal deal which comes with an Udon and Sashimi plate. The Sashimi is fresh and I order it every time. The food comes out promptly although the staff can sometimes be a little slow taking an order. If you're in a hurry head straight up to the counter and order. Free wifi! For drinks, I would go for one of the Japanese beers - Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo or for those who like a little bit of Mexican - Coronas are available. Sake is also served warm or cold. If you're feeling like a glass of wine it's BYO bottle of wine. There's a bottle-o round the corner on Bourke Street. At the moment they have this amazing deal offering 10% your bill on Mondays. YAY ! My 100th REVIEW !…read more This gem in Surry Hills was introduced to me by my buddy and I love her for that ! LOVE LOVE LOVE....why? Reason #1 - Value for money Considering how expensive dining out in Sydney is, it is often difficult to find a restaurant that serves good food with reasonable prices. SUSHI SUMA DID IT ! The set dinners are good for 2 people (guarantee that both of you will leave the restaurant with smiles on your face!) and it costs less than $40 ! (without any drinks) How awesome is that? Reason #2 - Good food Agedashi tofu : Tofu is lightly battered and deep fried , served with the warm soy-based sauce, YUM Sashimi : Take a bite and you know it's fresh. Tonkatsu - YUM YUM Reason #3 - Service Service is FAST. This helps especially if you were starving ! The negatives include 1) Tables are slightly *too* close to one another. It is difficult NOT to hear the conversation at the table next to you 2) The couch seat is kinda worn out....hence not very comfortable to sit on. Highly recommended , two thumbs up !

The value comes from the authentic taste and high quality that's un-compromised by the generous portion of servings. (Please read October 2018 update, can't be arsed doing yet another review of Makoto, but the news…read moreis good!) This hurts. For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

This a big call but I think this is the best sushi train in Sydney!! Genrally I don't like sushi…read moretrains but this is certainly an exception. The seafood is always fresh and of a high grade. However this does come at a price and you will certainly be paying for it. They have great Salmon sashimi but my favourites come off the menu, not the train and they are the omelette and king prawn hand roll and fisherman's soup. The Agedashi tofu ain't bad either ! I only wish less people knew how good this place is as sometimes the queue is pretty long.
