I've sampled Sushi from all over the place. Some good, some bad.
My work decided to post me out East this year and immediately I thought, "Oh no! Maritimers are not huge fish fans, their culture is fish fish fish, it's part of the provincial income. There's going to be no Sushi, just that crap from Sobeys!!"
Well I am happy to say that I was wrong. Since moving to Greenwood Nova Scotia at the beginning of March 2013 I have been going to Sushi Fang at every opportunity.
Not only is it affordable, but the food is just AMAZING. It's prepared Fresh right in plain view, and the staff are perfectly happy to let you get up, see them prepare it. They will talk to you and are very friendly. Some of the kitchen staff are mostly fluid in varied chinese dialects but the ones who speak English are more than happy to play translator.
The waiting staff are also very friendly. In particular the head waitress Amy (pretty sure she's the head waitress as she knows her stuff and I swear she never goes home) is very friendly, always checking in on customers and has a terrific memory for her customers favorite menu items.
Some things I'd like to talk about are taste, presentation, variety and price.
1. Taste - The food here tastes wonderful. When I eat Sushi I expect an explosion of flavor and texture. The food here is appropriately juicy, well seasoned, always fresh and yes the flavor is EXPLOSIVE!!!
2. Presentation - When your food is presented to you, it is presented on appropriately themed tableware. It is arranged nicely depending on quantity and shape of the items. Rolls are served on special racks that hold them up so that all the food is in full show. Sauces are poured on in a very decorative fashion matching the type of food. If it's a banana maki then the sauce is yellow and tangy, if it is a dragon roll then it is sprinkled with fish eggs and sauce.
The restaurant itself has a nice simple color scheme that matches the asian theme, with various Japanese decorations around and Asian music playing gently in the background. (Not just instrumental either, sometimes very beautiful songs that make me wish I could speak the language)
3. Variety - I will say this first. If you do not like fish, YOU CAN STILL EAT HERE!! The menu has more than just fish for its Sushi and it also has more food than just sushi. My wife is allergic to fish. Last week I took her to Sushi Fang and she has Chicken Teriyaki style sushi, followed by avocado Maki, and Cucumber Maki. She loved it and I can happily say I've converted her to Sushi.
Also on the menu they have Sushi Pizza, It's sushi toppings with veggies on a rice crust. I haven't tried it yet but my fellow Sushi eaters say it is wonderful. It's on my todo list. They also have soups, bento bowls, rice dishes, noodles and one of my favorite dishes, Singapore Rice noodles. So many things to try and so little stomach space.
Also if you haven't tried the food yet and you are hoping for a drop of something to help it all go down you'll be happy to know that their liquor license has just been approved. Now you can treat yourself to some Saki, Sapporo, Heineken etc.
4. Pricing - Another thing that surprised me is that Sushi fang is pretty good for their prices. Everything is affordable. I go for all you can eat every chance I get an usually spend about $15 when I leave. From what I understand All you can eat is about $18 at supper time but they also pull out more menu items for the suppers.
If you are just getting takeout, expect to pay about $10-12 for an order of about 8 rolls which is pretty good.
All in all this is a great experience. I highly recommend Sushi Fang to Sushi veterans and newbies alike. You will not walk away disappointed. read more
