There are some mental health clinicians that go into the business of helping others because of…read moretheir desire to help themselves, to try and master self-discovery. Essentially, they are insatiable about looking for their own mentors and healers. They must feel in control of this otherwise naturally occurring process. I have maybe been guilty of this behavior at different times myself, but then again, I am NOT a therapist. I digress. This was my experience with Deborah. For me personally, her approach was too intense. I often would see her pacing the outside of the professional building, looking suspiciously out into the parking lot. This happened on my initial visit and one other time and was a red flag that our energy levels were not compatible. I attended a few more sessions to see if in her office she could transmute her own nervousness and effectively treat me and my concerns, but I never sensed an innate desire to learn and grow from me as her client, as often she mistakenly rerouted our time together where she would be ranting about her son who was about my age. She suggested a treatment approach for me that proved to be highly ineffective for me personally and I did have to regroup and recover with the support of the mental health community for several months from the traumatization of her inadequate and harmful diagnosis. THAT being said, I cannot say for certain that she is narcissistic for example, or screening her clientele, but my personal interaction was highly detrimental.

I found Dr. Dugan's interview techniques to be manipulative and suite the narrative he is trying to…read morespin. Many of my concerns were minimized yet he seemed to speak about my ex like a long lost child overlook many things. The parenting plan he came up with lacked thoughtful insight into how it might affect the kids it be an undue hardship to the "visiting" parent, making them responsible for all transportation for exchanges etc. many of his recommendations support an outdated family model with specific gender roles IMHO. I believe he plays many games. He once accused me of being late for an appointment when I had emails from his assistant showing the appointment time. I believe he did this to see if I would get angry because my ex accused me of being a control freak (kettle black). He once was locked out of his office and many times conduced work with his shoes off and in an unprofessional manner. He "unofficially" spoke with me about another supposed client who was in the same line of work to ask about mental health screening for the job only to find out later that he had concerns about my own... In my opinion his psychological testing and analysis proved to be way off base. I do not present this way in my life whatsoever. Many of the important points made and seemingly supported by him in interviews were excluded from reports and I was misquoted several times. Even when presented with clear evidence of divorce abuse or evidence to support my assertion that my ex was lying at nearly every turn he minimized this behavior or chalked it up to being " common" during the divorce process. Many of his recommendations are cookie cutter and he does not look at schedules or consider input from parents about school schedules. He seems to be annoyed with any feedback or corrections. To me he seemed like he wants you to know he is in charge and has power and influence to affect your relationship with the children. Lastly, He seemed to focus more on the intimate details of the marriage and relationship between divorcing parents them rather than the children and what would best support them. Luckily, his recommendations ultimately resulted in a parenting plan that supported equal parenting time and the judge did not take his recommendations. However, the process of working with him to get to these conclusions was traumatic when reading the differences between what was talked about during interviews and what ended up in reports. I don't have any experience with other evaluators but I did not feel like he is straightforward, honest or neutral or ethical.

But she immediately put those worries to rest and has been a supportive and guiding light on my mental health journey. She is fair and honest, giving me the room to express myself but also not allowing me to wallow or indulge in self pity. I have had to cancel several times due to family issues and other reasons, and she's never given me a hard time about it or still charged me for the day (the way most therapists do) even if I have given her little to no advanced warning. The one and only time she ever rescheduled was due to having COVID and I was glad she did because I don't want to catch it. If it weren't for her, I don't know where I'd be mentally today. She's taken the time and care to guide me down this path, and given me the tools to improve myself. Her caring nature shines through, and it's obvious why she chose the selfless path of a healer. Anyone who is need of a qualified, caring, dedicated and no nonsense therapist will love Gerry.
