I think you have to be a teenager to be seen by a therapist here but I think the lay counselors could be accessible to younger clients. They have a three part mental health program, consisting of lay counseling, which is like peer support, professional counseling overseen by licensed therapists, which is difficult to be placed in ( I tried for myself to hire someone but the waiting list was many months out) and then finally counseling offered on a donation-based fee schedule run by the program director or a licensed therapist overseeing their in-house Associate Therapists seeking hours for their licensure. I did not feel like the therapy here is legit for more severe diagnoses or symptom management. This is a faith-based organization as well, so often it's a challenge to be placed or find someone who can accommodate the things you are wanting to work on, which for some people, is highly specific. Therapists here I feel like would never turn anyone away who truly was at the end of their search to find a good fit. Sometimes all you need is a nudge from a compassionate person who is non-judging and non-biased towards your situation. Let's face it, you cannot always call crisis in every situation and you cannot always go to your friends or family for direction. The receptionist was a bit curt as well if my questions became too specific and the phone tag was for real. I would suggest going directly through your insurance or a trusted primary care doctor, or a trusted friend for referrals. Good luck in your search!

There are some mental health clinicians that go into the business of helping others because of…read moretheir desire to help themselves, to try and master self-discovery. Essentially, they are insatiable about looking for their own mentors and healers. They must feel in control of this otherwise naturally occurring process. I have maybe been guilty of this behavior at different times myself, but then again, I am NOT a therapist. I digress. This was my experience with Deborah. For me personally, her approach was too intense. I often would see her pacing the outside of the professional building, looking suspiciously out into the parking lot. This happened on my initial visit and one other time and was a red flag that our energy levels were not compatible. I attended a few more sessions to see if in her office she could transmute her own nervousness and effectively treat me and my concerns, but I never sensed an innate desire to learn and grow from me as her client, as often she mistakenly rerouted our time together where she would be ranting about her son who was about my age. She suggested a treatment approach for me that proved to be highly ineffective for me personally and I did have to regroup and recover with the support of the mental health community for several months from the traumatization of her inadequate and harmful diagnosis. THAT being said, I cannot say for certain that she is narcissistic for example, or screening her clientele, but my personal interaction was highly detrimental.
