I have been to Dr. Susan three times for Photo Dynamic Therapy with Micro Needling and have been awed by the care, kindness, and results with each session. I was treated by Dr. Stuart in the fall of 2013 for varicose and spider veins in both legs. I had a bad feeling about the place from the get-go but decided to stay the course and I couldn't be more sorry that I did. I won't pull any punches-- Dr. Stuart mangled me. Suffice to say she didn't follow common practice in treating me and she acted unprofessionally and irresponsibly and this resulted in an injury that will never fully heal. The reason I'm writing this review a year and a half later is because I wanted to be fair and see how the injury progressed. I've seen virtually no improvement in about a year now, so I feel safe in saying that I will have a really ugly scar on my leg for all the world to see for the rest of my life. That scar is solely the result of Dr. Stuart's negligence-- during the treatment itself, through months of ineffective after-care and in failing to refer me to a wound-care specialist. I've seen two medical malpractice attorneys about this and both told me that, while the details of the case showed clear negligence and that the damage caused was plainly the result of that negligence, I didn't have much of a chance winning a case unless I had lost a limb or perhaps if I was a print model or someone whose livelihood depends on physical appearance. So, I guess the best I can do is warn others about this quack doctor. If the other negative reviews (mostly stemming from Stuart's total disregard for patients' time, her inexperienced staff and her ridiculously mismanaged office) weren't enough for you, take it from me--Do not even consider undergoing even the simplest treatment at the hands of this woman. Dr. Stuart is a very very friendly lady and her front office staff is quite pleasant. I went in for a couple of issues, acne and a weird mole. I was pretty stressed out and really wanted to talk about all my symptoms as well as what options there were to treat me (I know my ailments weren't the most urgent, but when it is happening to you it seems like a huge thing). Dr. Stuart really did not give me enough time to talk with her, she was basically in and out within 7-8 minutes. The mole was actually a water bump and she removed it from my lips. But instead of starting with a more conservative way of removing it, she cut off a chunk of my flesh (for reals). I now have a scar and it feels weird on my lips...I am always licking it. I went back to her and after examining the scar she says I can go to this plastic surgeon she works with to get that fixed. I really want to say wonderful things about the friendly Dr. Stuart, but I just can't at this time. read more

I've been going to Dr.Stuart for about a year now with my daughter for mostly acne issues. I've been to other dermotologists and none of the treatments did much good in clearing the acne but Dr.Stuarts recommendations have really cleared both our skin!! She makes her own acne cream that she sells at her office which is really amazing! I sent my husband there yesterday to have some skin tags removed, he called me immediately after raving about how kind and knowledgeable Dr. Stuart is....not to mention all the lovely ladies that work with her. This office is a joke. Though, the receptionist Jennifer, was very nice. That's no reason to stay. I had an appointment at 10:10, waited in the waiting room for 45 minutes, after asking several times when I'd be seen, and being told that I was next, I finally got called in. Only to wait in the exam room and be told by the "nurse" that Dr. Stuart should be in shortly, but she didn't know how long. Fifty five minutes of my time was enough to be wasted. I got up and left the room, asked the receptionist to shred all of my paperwork. They have no concept of time and surely don't understand that people have jobs they need to get back too. Dr. Stuart didn't leave a good impression on me for a first time visit and I didn't even get to meet her. And, based on these reviews, I think I'm better off not to have. I was referred by Dr Stuart from one of my customers because probably she was sick and tired of me complaining about dark spots of melasma taking what seemed like permanent residence right on my face. I made an appointment right away because being in business "word of mouth" is the most trusted source of advertising. Anyhow office staff was wonderful, parking was fine, not the best not the worse. I really loved her when I first met her. She is rad actually. I love her personality, we totally clicked. Before I walked in I was having anxiety thinking about what would be the treatment plan and most importantly the cost. She made me feel very comfortable. She really took her time, heard my story, cheched me out and recommended that we go with the most inexpensive way first and if it doesnt help we will discuss then. I felt really happy with that, she is not in to try and make a quick buck. I think she is in it to have a customer for life. So I have been on the treatment for a little over a month and it has been amazing and it is pretty simple to maintain because I am the type of person if I do not see results I lose patience. I have been seeing Dr Stuart for about 10 years. I have a few comments: She usually keeps me waiting a while. usually I leave the exam room because I am sure I have ben forgotten. I have difficulty getting her to give me information about my condition, its causes, or information about the medicines she prescribes. She never fails to try to sell my laser treatment, but she has yet to explain how it works or what symptoms it will affect, or anything else. Appointments are scheduled a long time out. Then several times she has rescheduled me (for more weeks out) to accommodate her personal schedule (then keeps me waiting after I have accommodated her). She a fine doctor, I am sure, except that I would like to be given the consideration of information. read more

I just went to see Dr Stuart today and she beat me up good, but it is sooo good. A lil chryo here - some V Beam there. I was out in less than an hour. And guess what? In a few days, I will be looking as dashing as ever. Just in time for Thanksgiving. I can honestly say, I am thankful for Susan. Even though I had seen Dr Stuart before I remember hearing from Laura that if she didn't do anything at my visit there would be a modest consultation fee. I see from the reviews here that many people are happy with Dr Stuart and her office. I went for a skin cancer screening and had a mole and worrisome spot removed. As far as my limited interaction with Dr Stuart, I do feel that her ability as a dermatologist is good. She was thorough with the skin exam, and very efficient in removing the tissue. She is also very friendly. I give the rating of "2" for her office workers, office set up, wait time, and unnecessary follow-up visit. Based on the reviews here, many people seem to feel very welcomed at the office, which is fine. Office assitants: I felt that the assistants behind the counter were very superficial and uninformed. They would not answer any questions and gave the impression they know nothing but how to greet people and schedule appointments. Office set up: The first visit, they put me into a room within a few minutes, but I believe this was to give me the impression I was being assisted right away. This was not the room in which the doctor was to see me. I sat in that room for 5-10 minutes. Then, I was moved to another room and told to change into a gown. This room was FREEZING and the gown is a light, flimsy thing that in no way keeps a person warm. I sat in this room for at least 15 min. I learned in my follow-up visit that having enough rooms is an issue in this office. They do not have enough rooms for the number of people they schedule (i.e., they overbook) Follow-up: I was surprised when the assistant said I needed to schedule a follow-up exam. Normally, the doc would simply mail the results or call if there was an issue. I was feeling this was a scam to get me to come back in and pay my copay and bill my insurance. When I asked, "why a follow-up?", the assistant simply said that Dr Stuart always schedules a follow-up, with no reasoning as to why it is necessary. In any case, I came back for the follow-up since I wanted to know my results and it seemed this was the only way it would happen. I scheduled this appt during my work day as I figured it should only take a few minutes. I was in the waiting room for 30 min, which I think is pretty unreasonable for a simple 2 min chat. I was brought into a room and waited another 5 min or so before the doc came in. She said they did not have a room for me which is why I had to wait. I was literally in there for 2 min as she basically read me the results. I could have easily read them myself and still feel there was no reason for the follow-up. I will continue searching for a better dermatologist office. Not to mention this is at Scripps and you have to park in a huge garage - it takes ~5 min to find a spot, then you have to pay $4 for parking. read more

Dr. Susan Stuart is one of the most through in the industry. I started going to see her back in the 90's when I had cystic acne. She was always helpful and got me in right away for an injection because they are very painful. I was going to many dermatologists and she was by far the best. Which is why I keep going back almost 20 years later. Her staff is always really great which is a reflection on the Drs. They have an excellent reputation in the county and I would highly recommend going to see her. You are in for a treat!!! read more

I recently had one of these exceptional encounters that deserves sharing. Dr. Susan Stuart of La Jolla Skin has been our family's dermatologist for many years. She came highly recommended to us by friends, and our family doctor. Her ability to diagnose and treat has always been spot-on for my family. Dr. Stuart now focuses on aesthetic skin treatments in her practice. I never thought I would seek out, or benefit from aesthetic skin treatment, but my old and sun damaged skin suggested otherwise. So I made another visit to Dr. Stuart, this time for me. Although it had been awhile since I had been to Dr Stuart's office, I was treated like a VIP by her staff. Dr Stuart gave me a careful examination and explained my options for treatment and the best course of action. I returned a few days later to let Dr. Stuart and her team work their magic. Not even a week has passed and the results are already amazing. I had a few friends that went to other dermatologists and didn't achieve much, so I was a bit reluctant to get anything done. Waited 1 hr, never saw doctor, got up and left - had to go back to work.

If I could give a rating with 0 stars, I would do so for Susan Stuart. I saw her twice. On my first visit, I called ahead to see if the doctor was running on schedule or late, because I had a lot to do and would have welcomed a bit more time to do it before I left for my appointment. The person on the phone told me Stuart was running on time, so I went up to the office. I ended up waiting 65 minutes! I certainly would have left if I had known the wait would be that long, but the front desk kept telling me "You're next, just a few more minutes." Stuart was very warm and friendly when I finally got to see her. She prescribed medication for my adult acne, then started pointing out all my other imperfections and pushed me to commit to laser treatments, dermabrasion, laser hair removal, and other things. You'd think I was some kind of freak, with all she was trying to convince me I needed. I filled the prescription and took the medication, which indeed helped my acne. I went to see her a second time for follow-up. I didn't have to wait but a few minutes. However, the doctor gave me less than five minutes of her time, and walked out while I was in the middle of asking her a question. About one month later, I made an appointment with a different dermatologist at Torrey Pines Dermatology because my finger nails and toe nails were turning black, and I thought I had some kind of disgusting fungus. Turns out the medication Stuart had prescribed was the culprit. However, Stuart had not warned me about this side effect, which apparently is very common. When I stopped taking the medication, my nails returned to a healthy pink color. The new dermatologist gave me a sample of some facial cleanser that he suggested I try before resorting to medication. The new dermatologist also gave me various skin tests, asked detailed questions about my diet, menstrual cycle, sleep, and more, all as part of the treatment analysis. I realized then that Stuart had not done any of that. She just prescribed the medication within the first few minutes of the first appointment. The new doctor suggested that it was healthier to avoid systemic medication if there is another alternative and also suggested that since my acne wasn't very bad, it would be better to go without any medication. He didn't mention any imperfections on my face, didn't try to push any other treatment (even though the office offers them), and was much more professional overall. About one year later, I decided to get laser hair removal, so I went back to Torrey Pines Dermatology. I saw a different dermatologist, but was treated with the same consideration and respect the facility's other doctor had provided. So forget Stuart and go to Torrey Pines instead! read more

I don't normally write reviews on Yelp, but I wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Stuart and the team at La Jolla Plastic Surgery & Dermatology. In addition to a routine skin check, I had some laser work done to fix some small broken blood vessels on my nose and cheeks, as well as some brown melasma spots on my face. Dr. Stuart was super attentive, answered all of my questions, and gave me a very thorough skin exam. And Nurse Nancy walked me through the laser procedure step-by-step and made sure that any discomfort from the laser was minimal. Woo-hoo isn't even an adequate response for how much I love Dr. Stuart. She is the best dermo I have ever been too, ever. That counts for a lot considering I have seen two dozen dermos in my life. She is extremely patient, kind and thorough (and hilarious as well)! She takes her time and you never feel rushed during your appointment. I had such a terrible experience with Dr. Stuart that I signed up with Yelp for the sole purpose of writing this review. She is unprofessional and has a blatant disregard for the well-being of her patients. I went to see Dr. Stuart in a panic because I had suddenly started losing my hair. I'd been told it's common to lose hair after pregnancy, but after a month I became alarmed because I started to notice my hairline receding and bald spots! I was scared and stressed and my gynecologist recommended I see a dermatologist. When I saw Dr. Stuart, she sent me for blood tests. I was clearly distressed but she reassured me she would call with the results the next day (or as soon as they arrived). This was on a Monday. I waited until Friday before I called and left a voicemail asking for my results. No one returned my call. The following Tuesday (it was a long weekend) I called again. After 20 minutes on hold, a nurse who clearly had no prior knowledge of my condition read me my results without any context or explanation. I actually spoke to the general manager to express how upset I was at the way my case was handled. She confirmed that my blood test results DID arrive at Dr. Stuart's office on Tuesday - the day after my appointment! Why had she not called me? Why did I have to call TWICE, only to receive the results ONE WEEK LATER? I was clearly distressed at the appointment and Dr. Stuart's attitude was catty and patronizing. Even after I spoke to the manager, Dr. Stuart never called me. This is not how a doctor should treat their patients. Do not go to Dr. Stuart! She told me that Dr.Stuart, had been rated as the best Dermatologist by the LA Jolla Light readers poll, of course I verified it at the time...all true. She gave me a full body exam and a clean bill of skin health. She not only cleared my skin but eased my mind as no other doctor has done for me in the past. The first impression I make prior to any establishment begins with front office staff and phone etiquette, evolving into - am I being heard (being hearing impaired - this rates high on my intro list). For the record on this review - the front office staff is above reproach! Each and every staff member who took a call from me, or contacted me was professional, calm, spoke clearly and addressed my questions with the utmost in customer service - very rare in my experience. Additionally, the staff continuously finds ways to accommodate my otherwise erratic work hours (work for a hospital) and should there be a change, they always contact me to assist in rescheduling. They are beyond customer service, they care. Secondly, sessions with Dr. Stuart. I was referred to Dr. Stuart by a reputable Doctor who I hold in the highest esteem. I required having multiple issues resolved and after consulting with my doctor and other doctors in the field of Dermatopathology (who knew of Dr. Stuart and also held her in high regard) - made my appointment. As a patient I hope that the doctors I select care, listen and address my issues to allay any concerns I may have. Dr. Stuart was refreshing from the moment we met. I will say that in some cases (as in all doctors' offices) a patient must be just that "patient". I always remind myself that if a doctor is not precisely on the minute, there must be another patient before me requiring a bit more of her/his time. Dr. Stuart proved time and time again that when she is with me, there is no timer. Therefore, If she is running a bit behind - I do not worry, I have a book or the staff checks in with me constantly. I too have been late (I too am in a hospital and sometimes emergencies arise) but this office understands and I am seen on my appointed day. Dr. Stuart goes over and beyond what is considered the norm to ensure our patient/Dr. relationship is special, informative, what I expected and if she sees more on a skin check - will take the time to address the situation. Although this might push the appointment past the allotted time, another patient may have to wait a bit longer. I too have been on that side and again, after may years have learned to bring work, a book or a laptop - because the extra time she spends with her patients could save or enhance their lives. Further, I find this lovely woman to be somewhat holistic in her approach - which, in essence means, calm, reassuring, concerned and simply lovely. Dr. Stuart also remembers I have a hearing issue and goes out of her way to face me while we speak, retains exceptional eye contact and finally, checks with me to acknowledge that I have understood what she needs to convey. That is real medicine! I do understand the rush and stress of all medical practices these days (I work in it all week - along with disasters) If I felt that Dr. Stuart missed one of my concerns, I ask the staff if they could give her a note or request a call. She always rises to the occasion. I have never left any appointments in this office feeling dissatisfied as I realized that I, the patient has a responsibility as well to have all of my questions ready for Dr. Stuart. I go into any medical or dental office as my own best advocate, and Dr. Stuart addresses each of my concerns leaving me feeling grateful for her concern and satisfied. Along with Dr. Stuart's staff being one of the best groups I have encountered, Dr. Stuart is one of the finest dermatologists. If I ever elect to go beyond checks and concerns with the dermis etc. I will consult with her and utilize her expertise. I feel extremely secure and pleased at her attention to detail, but more importantly, to her caring and expertise in all phases of dermatology. She is one of the finest Doctors on my personal list of health care specialists and her name, and my experiences in her office is passed along to all of the special people in my life. We thank this fine Doctor for all she gives and the care she provides. My second appointment with this office proved to be just as positive as the first. The staff were lively, happy and answered any questions I had. Dr. Stuart met with me with the same upbeat, positive and comfortable presence as the first office visit - inquiring as to how my status was and immediately addressing my pre-existing situation, which I might add - cleared up with this final treatment. I thought it would require 3 visits, but she diligently and aggressively treated it to heal rapidly. I am very selective about who I retain as a doctor as I want my entire family to be involved with my decision to include these specialists in our on-going lives. I had a similar problem that many of the other posters here did. The doctor seemed rushed and to leave most of the interaction to her staff. A small cyst was removed from my lip, but she didn't tell me that it would leave a scar that is bigger and more noticeable than the original cyst. Ok, so far, this was normal "not what I expected" stuff. Then I tried to get my records from her office so I could get a second opinion. That's when the fun started. I tried diligently, including visiting her office in person, to get my records (biopsy result of the cyst from ONE VISIT!!). My new doctor tried to. Her staff was beyond rude and bitchy. They told me that legally they have a right to wait to process my request for 30 days. ummmm... but WHY WOULD YOU??? My new dermatologist remarked that it was very strange and unprofessional for a doctor to not respond to another doctor's request for records. When Dr. S finally called me a month later she was very apologetic and she told me her children had been sick which prevented her from returning my call. That would be ok for a hairdresser but a DOCTOR? REALLY?? BEWARE. Some weird stuff going on here. read more

Dr. Susan Stuart is one of the best around. She has a wonderful bed side manner and has always made me feel totally comfortable when I am at my most vulnerable. Because I travel often and have lived bi-coastally for a few years, I have visited several dermatologists for various reasons and/or skin conditions. As a result of all of my traveling, I have suffered from minor acne related to stress. Dr. Susan is the one I always want to go back to because she treats the problem immediately and always makes me feel more confident that everything will be okay. She treats you like a person and not just a patient. I have gone to Dr. Susan for my acne, my skin condition called psoriasis, and for my first botox injection. I never have left unsatisfied. She is a kind woman and knows what she is doing. Her compassion and kind nature are great qualities, but her ability to pinpoint the problem, treat it, and explain it to patients in an understandable/approachable way makes her a GREAT DOCTOR. I would definitely not recommend paying to go see Dr. Stuart. She made me feel like she didn't have time to see me and when she did it was like a whirlwind of her speaking in "doctor language" to her nurse rattling off a long list of prescriptions for me to go get filled and then rushed out without a thorough explanation. First time I came in I had to wait over an hour to see Dr. Stuart. I rencently tried to make an appt as I had a bump on my back that was making me nervous. The staff said they would have a nurse look at the photos because they couldn't make time for me to come in. I have never heard back from them. Not only did they not try to get me in to see the odd bump but never even looked at the pictures I sent. Horrible customer service and no care for the customer's needs. I came to them for some help with my love handles, I ended up treating them with a procedure they have called Coolsculpting. I would like to give a good recommendation....but I can't. I have been a patient of hers for a quite few years now and unfortunately grew somewhat accustom to the VERY long wait time which means I am seen at least one hour after my appointment time, but usually almost two hours after my scheduled appointment time. Her staff has been ok and customer service is maybe ok..., I feel like it has been inconsistent and I only recognize one or two faces from my visits before and I had my appoints with her about every six months, It feels like she has had a revolving door of employees except a minor few, which is not to say that the y are great. My major complaint is that when I was seen by Dr, Stuart, aside from the wait time, was that she would want discus my children and her children and her La Jolla lifestyle and in my eyes compare it to mine. I felt like my MEDICAL issues were not as important as my social status. I feel that is very unprofessional.... and I do not want to even speak about her appearance or personal hygiene, What I think was the worst part of at latest visit was that I truly felt FORCED to have a consultation with her husband Dr. Chaffoo (and that's a whole other story) I honestly feel like she and her husband are only in it for the money, NOT PATIENT CARE. While the office staff and Dr. Stuart are very friendly. They don't care about the long term health issues of the drugs they prescribe. My daughter was put on a medication for acne that made her very sick with multiple bladder and kidney infections and even kidney stones. We had multiple ER visits and regular Dr. visits that I had to pay for and Dr. Stuart would never take the responsibility. I had a $75 outstanding bill with them and I sent them letters saying I didn't feel responsible after I had to pay for all of my ER visits and they still tried to ruin my credit and send me to collections. Just not very professional. I would be very careful. She cares more about playing a part in La Jolla than the actual care of the patients. read more

The last time I saw Dr. Stuart I felt like I was wasting her time with my minor issues (though important to me) and that she preferred to push her laser treatments for the big bucks.
