A building with no windows in SOMA between 5th and 6th with the word 'Club'? Sounds scary?…read more Well, if you are brave enough to walk in, you won't find bouncers or pink lights. What you'll find is one of the best wine stores in San Francisco with friendly and knowable staff. Although it's called Wine Club, no membership is required. I think they have a wine club that you can join, but they've never pushed this on me. Many of their Saturday afternoon tasting events are outstanding. A wine store that offers below tasting of the best California Cabs deserves 5 Stars. 2004 Big Guns of California Cabernet Tasting 1. Quintessa 2. Dominus 3. Rudd Oakville Estate Proprietary Red 4. Hewitt Rutherford 5. Far Niente 6. Ramey Jericho Canyon 7. BV Georges de Latour 8. Joseph Phelps Insignia 9. Mondavi Reserve 10. Beringer Private Reserve 11. Opus One 12. Ridge Monte Bello Prices of their tasting differs every weekend. Most are $20-40. For the special tasting above, it was $80/person, which included a Riedel Glass. You are allowed to share a glass with someone. Sure, $80 is not cheap, but opening a bottle of 2004 Insignia would set you back $160, so it was actually a cheap way to try 12 really good wines. K&L or Wine Club: Do I have to choose one? I go to both. K&L is better organized store with a nice website, but I often get more about of tastings at The Wine Club. They are just a few blocks apart, so I suggest going to both.

I am way overdue on my review of The Wine Club probably because I just figure it's common knowledge…read morehow awesome this place is. It's not a club with like a secret password or anything. But perhaps I could go into a pretentious discourse about how the purveyors there found a rare vintage that I had been looking for since the Second World War when I was a member of the French resistance fighting the Nazis in the Alsace. Well, first of all, I'm not that old, you Taylor Swift sycophant, and thank you very much for believing that I knew Hitler personally in my youth. Second, I couldn't tell a rare vintage from what comes out of a box through a spigot. Tip it, tip it real good. But I do know classier people than me who throw dinner parties that actually can tell the difference. This is where I go at the last minute to find something special and pretend I actually know about wine and how it complements the palate when digesting the meal the host prepared (photo: http://bit.ly/1hhvfUz). The Wine Club allows me to be a procrastinator because first, it's one of the few places in the city with a parking lot. Second, their staff is really helpful with a minimum of direction from me. Here's a sample instruction... "I need something red that looks pricey but costs less than twenty bucks. I think he's making meat." From that, I've been recommended some truly great product. I also come here for my spirits since their selection is just as diverse on this front (photo: http://bit.ly/1PudYTp). For some reason, I have a stronger opinion on bourbons and vodkas than I do with wines. To develop my palate, I've been to their $5 Friday Evening Happy Hour wine tastings, and that's a great opportunity to sample some new stock in a convivial way, but for the life of me, I can never remember what to get. Thank goodness the staff can. Now about that rare vintage...

If you're in dogpatch, this is probably the only liquor store game in town…read more I would be much more upset about this if it wasn't a solid liquor store. They put more effort into groceries than most - there's a variety of brands and quality for the products they do stock(sauces, snacks, bread, kitchen staples) - and often the prices are better than the grocery across 3rd street. There's even a little bit of basic produce (onions, lemons). Household products (otc medication, toilet paper and the like) can be a little pricey. The booze is priced fairly. There's an impressive variety of liquor, wine, sake, beer (loads of IPAs), and even a few sour beers. The staff is always friendly, very chipper and energetic. The location is clean, and not dank and depressing like a lot of the corner stores out there.

As I walked to my car, my mouth became parched so I walked in and saw a great number of refrigerator cases. After you pass the cashier area, you'll see a substantial freezer unit with a variety of ice cream bars and pints. I passed several cases of beer and malt liquor varieties (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=d6-EOdTISH24Z5GoVk3dpw) before reaching the non-alcoholic beverages along the back wall (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=MzwmzFFyV5J_2y_XG2AufA). It took me a while before I settled on this (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rQkPgEC4bCSYltVjXUj_og). In heading out, I noticed the substantial chips and snack bags (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=w8lpu14g1uB6YAIG4eSncg) on my way out and grabbed a small bag for later. Besides what I mentioned, I noticed that there was a variety of tobacco products behind the counter. The store is sandwiched between a breakfast place and a corner bar so their variety of products make sense. There are a number of businesses across the street (framing and furniture, I believe) as well as restaurants scattered around the area. Normally, this store type would rate a four for me but I was happily surprised with my interaction with the cashier who was very laid back and cordial. After wishing him a nice weekend, he surprisingly replied with enthusiasm, "You too!". When I'm able to leave a business with a smile and a warm heart, the fifth star is earned in my book.

They featured a flight of 5 different wines from the Paolo Bea's family in Umbria. If you enjoy spicy red wine with the flavor of some dark fruit, I'd highly recommend their Rosso de Veo and Pagliaro. It was definitely a nice and relaxing spot in the neighborhood. It's a nice way to chat with the neighbors, and the owner has very in-depth knowledge of imported european wines. However, for a $35 wine flight, the pours were considerably conservative. If the amount of your purchase is double or more of the tasting, then your tasting fee could be waived, which is a great way for the store to upsell. I'd love to come back and buy / check out more wines, but I'm not sure if I will come back for the value I can get out of the tasting.
