My business with this place has been dwindling down for the past couple of years, since the current owners took over, because their prices just aren't good for the neighborhood, but the nail in the coffin was one of their clerks (South Asian, beard, works there and at other convenience stores in the TL) harassing a homeless man who wasn't even infront of their business because the owner of Fox didn't like how the man was panhandling (the owner was also trying to harass the owners of the business the man was begging in front of, because they allow him to be there). Keep in mind that the homeless man was doing nothing more than sitting on the edge of the sidewalk asking for change. He wasn't blocking the sidewalk, he wasn't accosting anyone or getting in their personal space he was just calling out for help so that he could feed himself (I've lived in San Francisco a long time and I know what agressive panhandling looks like, this was in no way that). When I asked the clerk what he was doing he said he wasn't harassing the man he was just telling him how he could beg for food in a different way that wasn't as annoying to himself and the owners of Fox Market (WTF???!). The business the homeless man was in front of, Saigon Sandwich (really the best Banh Mi in SF), has no problem with him being there and neither Saigon nor Fox are hurting for business so any argument that the homeless man was driving away customers or otherwise hurting Fox's business (once again the homeless man wasn't even in front of Fox market, he was down the block) is complete bull.
I have done business with these people for years and I never knew how dark and dead their hearts are. Everyone would do themselves and the world a better service to walk an extra block to the New Princess market at Hyde and Eddy for their shopping. Their prices are better, and though I've never gotten white glove customer service there (does anyone actually expect this from a liquor store in the TL) at least as far as I know the owners aren't monsters. read more
