We contracted with Surface Bella on June 5th to build a new deck, with an agreed start date of December 1st. This timing was chosen deliberately--after Thanksgiving but early enough not to interfere with our Christmas plans. In mid-November, Daniel from Surface Bella reconfirmed the December 1st start date, and I confirmed that we were ready. On December 1st at 9:00 a.m., I called to ask when the crew would arrive and was told--without any prior notice--that work would not begin until December 2nd. Had I not called, we would have waited all day with no information. On December 2nd, we were told to expect the crew between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., but no one arrived. My 10:00 a.m. call went to voicemail; a later call finally produced an update. The crew arrived at 11:00 a.m., tore down the existing porch, then informed us they lacked the proper tools to finish and would need to return the next day. On December 3rd, the crew arrived at 9:00 a.m., completed the teardown, dug postholes, and began framing. They left at 3:00 p.m. without notifying us they were done for the day or providing any update on progress. On December 4th, two workers arrived at 10:45 a.m., appeared to do little work, and left at 11:15 a.m. without notifying us they were leaving. At that point, after four days, very little had been accomplished. I emailed Daniel, the scheduling supervisor, expressing concern that this should have been day four of a one-week project and that the delays and lack of communication were unacceptable. We had scheduled the work specifically so we could decorate for Christmas and bring our tree through the porch. At that point, it seemed we might not even have a porch by Christmas. After the email, I spoke with Daniel directly. He offered little explanation but said he would assign a different crew and asked if weekend work would be acceptable to finish the project. I agreed and canceled our weekend plans to be available. On Friday, the new crew arrived at 8:30 a.m. and worked steadily until sunset, around 5:30 p.m. Based on Daniel's request, I expected work to continue through the weekend. However, on Saturday no one arrived. By 11:00 a.m., I called Surface Bella and was eventually told there were "truck problems" and the crew would not make it. On Sunday, when no one arrived by 10:00 a.m., I left Daniel a voicemail. When I reached him later, he had no information and said he would follow up. By noon, he advised us to assume the crew would not be coming. This marked the seventh consecutive day I had made myself available and the third day in that period when no crew arrived at all. At that point, only one full day of work had been completed. I sent Daniel a photo showing the deck only partially framed, with roughly one-third of the decking installed. On Monday morning, the crew arrived at 9:45 a.m. and completed the deck. As daylight faded, they rushed through the stairs and railings. The crew left at 5:30 p.m., and we later discovered several issues: balusters were not properly secured, and there were visible gaps where the railing met the house, exposing areas where siding does not extend down to the rail line. On Tuesday, the cleanup crew arrived at 11:00 a.m. I spoke with the on-site manager and pointed out the deficiencies. He said a crew would return Wednesday to address them. Daniel later stated that no crew would be available until Thursday. I informed him I was unavailable Thursday but could be present Friday, December 12th, which he confirmed. On Friday morning, no crew arrived as scheduled. After multiple calls, the crew finally arrived at 11:30 a.m. and corrected all deficiencies, finishing at 2:30 p.m. At this time, I cannot recommend Surface Bella. While the final work was adequate and the contractual requirements were eventually met, we were assured the project would take one working week and it ultimately took two, with repeated delays and poor communication throughout. In hindsight, No supervisor from the company has reviewed the work for quality or completeness. I should have requested photos of prior projects, as I would have specified Trex railings to match the deck. read more

Unfortunately, we cannot recommend Surface Bella for any work. We had an EzeBreeze room installed to contain our existing covered patio. The end result is fine but, the journey was horrible. They installed the first two panels upside down, failed to use caulk until I called it out, started to install the door in the wrong location, installed it in the correct location only to have the swing opposite the contract and specifications outlined, and many more issues. Did they eventually make it right, yes, but, multiple days off of work as my wife or I had to be home to ensure they were doing the job right, let alone, it took them five days to do a job that should have been done in two. Highly recommend the product, just not this company for any quality work or care in craftsmanship. We can't forget to mention that all the holds screws are not aligned and several panels have five bolts and several have four. The response was, you are right, they should not have done that. We paid full price just to get them out of our home. Fortunately, our warranty is with EzeBreeze. read more

On 3/31/23 we contracted with Surface Bella a company that builds and replaces and repairs Trex decks in Greenville SC to upgrade our current deck to trex laid on the diagonal with a picture frame around it. Total cost $16,230. Downpayment of $8,115. On May 3rd, the deck was completed and the final payment of $8,115 was made. On 5/17/23 Southeastern Underdeck {SEUD] company installed a ceiling under the Trex deck. It leaked from day one. SEUD came out and evaluated the ceiling and the deck. They advised it was a flashing problem that Surface Bella did not take care of when they installed the deck. Ben Smith, SEDU, sent an email to us on July 5th stating "Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't address that as they were redecking, as they were looking right at it." After several texts and emails to Tim Davis at Surface Bella, he replied that they would remove the decking on approximately 15 x 13 ft of the deck and that they did not have the flashing material necessary to fix it but they would then come back after it was fixed and re-install the boards for $1800. My husband, Ted, asked if they would split that cost and Tim Davis in another text replied NO. So Ted who is 77 years old, by himself, removed all the necessary decking boards, put new flashing in, and reinstalled the decking boards during July 25 -27 in mid to high 90-degree weather. Attached is a picture of holes in the flashing (you have to enlarge the picture to see] when Surface Bella had removed all the original decking. The next pictures show, when Ted removed the new decking boards there were holes where their installer just placed deck boards on top of the holes!!!!! We would never recommend Surface Bella to anyone! They do sloppy work and don't stand behind it. read more

We recently had a screen porch built by Surface Bella. For the most part, the project went very well. The problem I had came up at the end of the project. On the final day of the project, the last subcontractor arrived to install the railings on my deck. I was busy at the time so at the end of their workday I looked out my window. Everything looked OK and I handed them my final check. One hour later, I looked at it a bit closer and noticed that the railings were not level. I sent the project manager a picture of a level sitting on the railing. When I spoke to him on the phone, he assured me that they would take care of it. I called four times over the course of the next month. The final two times I called. He didn't even answer the phone. The moral of the story is, don't hire Surface Bella if you're expecting service after the sale. Once the check is in the bank, they seem to forget who you are. read more

Surface Bella built a deck with a roof on the back of my house. I am very pleased with the completed project. Everyone that I worked with was congenial and always listened to my thoughts as the project progressed. Joseph and his crew (the builder) were a great pleasure to work with. Very professional company and high-quality work. Yes, I will hire them again when I have a new project! I gave the company 5 stars because they came more close to perfection than any other person/company that has done work for me. I have never given a top rating before now. read more

I found this contractor on Angi's List. We met with the owner, liked him and the product very much (Onyx Collection). We awaited materials to schedule install (convert garden tub/shower to walk in shower/storage). That was the last thing that went well. We had 3 subcontractors. A one week job rolled over into a 5th week. Materials were either ordered incorrectly (gloss panels vs requested subway tile panel), missing (caddies on either side of shower), or measured and ordered wrong 2x (window kit). It became harder and harder to reach the contractor. The owner was supposed to call and never did after my husband text and called multiple times. Buyer beware. After we started our project, my husb found the BBB rating which was not good and noted similar complaints. Get references, wait for another contractor. We ended up having to hire another contractor to fix the walls, paint, and horrible, cheap, tacky shelves that were poorly installed and cut incorrectly. They were very professional. Sean designed my bath remodel on the spot. He promised a range of 3 to 5 weeks to complete the project including manufacturing the walls which took 3 weeks, they finished in four. I did not expect them to follow up after the job was complete, but they did. Kudos to Matt for cleaning up, and completing everything in less than two days, would highly recommend.
