Awesome food is being served here! Being in a food hall, this place is one of many fantastic restaurants serving up many different types of cuisines. Service is fast and the people are super friendly. I tried out the tamale and it was great! Love the addition of the red sauce over the top. Food was good, but not a great value for what we got and the time it takes. It took 15 min to get our food, after placing the order ourselves on the tablet. Tipping for that always feels odd to me, as the service provided was just cooking the food and handing it over, but we did. The tacos were tasty and juicy, but we agreed that they were expensive for just 2 each. The beans and chips were good, especially with the hot salsa mixed in. Would probably try another place if we were here again, go go to a regular Mexican restaurant for the same price/wait. Cool wasn't able to keep track of our order and needed us to remind him of the number and what was on it. Oh yummmmmmm.....got the cochinita pabil tacos and an order of guacamole. Because I can never pass up a good guacamole and my guac-dar was telling me it was going to be good. The cochinita pabil tacos are similar to the al pastor tacos but I decided on the cochinita pabil and I am so glad I did! Very flavorful meat and tangy pickled red onion on a house made blue corn tortilla. I had them put the habanero sauce on the side because I was a little scared, tbh, and that was a good call! Not for the faint of heart. The guacamole had so much more to it than your typical restaurant guac - there was at least 2 more layers of flavor, definitely citrus and something else. This was an elevated guac. Well worth trying. I got my food to go, Sureste is located in the Foundry Food Court, which can get a little chaotic, so I just decided to head home. The smell was so tempting I had to stop to take a bite. The man at the counter was very helpful but I kind of think he might struggle a bit with English. There are so many options at City Foundry Food Hall- the pibil tacos were what we chose because they were out of the pork belly tacos. They were tasty and full of tender meat. The little side of hot sauce was so fresh and full of flavorful heat to complement the sweeter pork. My go to restaurant at the City Foundry. I lean towards the tacos, specifically the shrimp taco. We also like the pork belly and pulled pork tacos. The flavors in these tacos meld so well together. The price is kinda hefty... however the quality is high and ingredients are fresh - so def worth it for me. The sides are decently portioned. We like the Sikil pak. I am going to be very honest in this review. The day I ordered from Sureste, was probably not a good day for them. Something had happened to their oven or fryer or something else so when I asked them for a potato taco, the guy told me that it would be at least 10-15 minutes. Since I was not in a rush that day, I was fine with waiting and just ordered some other stuff from other stands. The guy behind the counter taking my order was friendly and very helpful when I was asking questions. When I shared with him that I wanted the vegetarian taco, he made sure that I did not have any shellfish allergies since they were having to use the same fryer for both that day. I appreciated the heads up. After paying for my taco, I walked around, grabbed something else to snack on and then went back after about 15 minutes. The guy making the taco said that he was finishing it up at that moment. When I went to my table to enjoy the taco, I was just not impressed with it. I really enjoyed the friend potatoes (almost like a nice hasbrown), but the tortilla was just not very good. I don't know what it was about the taste, but I did not enjoy the tortilla. I did enjoy the potatoes and the veggies on top (except there were way too many red onions so I had to remove a few). I will definitely give them another chance next time I visit the food hall. I want this taco place to be successful since they do have a good menu with cool flavors....but I think I just went on an off day. I will update my review after I give them a 2nd chance. read more

Sureste is a great place to stop for dinner in City Foundry. Lots of options and everything is full of flavor. I am not a pork eater which can be challenging sometimes but I was happy to find the chili turkey which came with wonderful handmade tortillas and a rich flavorful sauce. Bad news first... the price of $14 for two tacos was alarming. The $7 for chips and salsa was steep. FORGET THAT. The flavor is amazing. And the salsa.... Read on! The Castacan tacos are made with pork belly, cilantro salsa, pickled tomatillo, and more that memory fails me now. It's an explosion of flavors that completely surpass the individual ingredients, and bring a vibrancy that surpasses all of the attempts at Mexican food that I've had in Missouri. The chips appear to be made from the failed tortillas that are being made on the spot. This in itself is a step up from the many restaurants that think Tostitos is authentic enough. But wait... The salsa. THE SALSA. I've had salsa my whole life from many different places. Both my wife and I make good salsas. This salsa is probably one of the more intriguing, tasty, vibrant, enchanting, and flavorful salsas we've ever had. The extra salsa to take home will be great, and was worth the half hour trip alone. Mediocre food at a high price point. We love City Foundry and have been many times since it opened. With all the new businesses that have opened up, parking has become absolutely atrocious. Allow yourself plenty of time during busy hours to find parking and expect to have to drive up and down the parking garage and parking lots a few times before a spot opens up. The new businesses are fantastic and offer a one stop entertainment and food experience that my family really enjoys. (tech-infused mini golf, draft house theatre, wine bar, virtual reality games, escape room, an interactive game show, etc.) Everything is a bit pricy but worth it for the variety. You could easily spend a whole day here if you wanted to. On this occasion, my family visited on a busy Saturday evening. Per usual, Food Hall was packed, so it took few minutes and some walking around to find a place to sit. No biggie, just know that it can take time to find seating, especially if you have a larger party. The live music was fantastic and much appreciated. The artist who was performing that day was very talented-my family really enjoyed his music! I've eyed Sur Este every time we go to Food Hall, so I was excited to try it. I got the al pastor tacos which are usually one of my favorites at Mexican restaurants. What arrived were two tiny street tacos (for $14!) with a few small pieces of chopped meat that were dry and relatively flavorless. The tacos were mostly tortilla with very little filling. The only flavor came from the spicy salsa that was put on top. I ordered a side of rice and beans. The rice was plain, unflavored, white rice, which took me aback since I've never seen a Mexican restaurant that didn't have amarillo rice or something similar. The beans were delicious, though. Honestly, I'd have preferred to just get a plate of the beans and tortillas. Just be prepared, the beans have a kick to them! I'm adding one star to the review because of the delicious beans and fresh tortillas. The aguas de tamarindo and jamaica were decent but overly sweet. They mostly tasted like sugar which overpowered the other flavors. I've been to quite a few places at City Foundry and will stick to those instead of Sureste. Very disappointing. read more

Wow! Went to the Foundry to meet friends. Thought I'd try something new as a few new food options have opened since I was there last. Sur Este blew me away. I ordered the crispy pork Mayan fried roll and a side of guacamole to share. The Mayan fried roll was so good I can say without reserve that it's the best Mexican dish I've ever eaten in St. Louis. I eat Mexican a lot. Don't get me wrong. There are many great Mexican restaurants in St. Louis but this dish was simply the best yet. The crispy pork was really crispy. I'm not exactly sure what the vessel was. I should have asked. Some form of dough resembling sopaipilla. It was fried perfectly, not greasy. The stuffing included green olives. They added the perfect compliment to the fried pork. There was a drizzle of aioli that added a wonderful moist element. Then there was the guacamole. Excellent! Very chunky. The owners are from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and feature several dishes local to their home (hence the name Sureste which translates to Southeast). Ask about the different dishes and they will happily describe and make suggestions. This visit, I had the burnt turkey tostada and sikil pak with chips. The tostada is not a traditional tostada, but rather fluffier, closer to a pupusa. It has a nice flavor snd texture, but the true star of the dish is the turkey! It was juicy and full of flavor! The sikil pak was ok. It is a dip made of pepitas, roasted tomatoes, and herbs and has the texture of hummus. The flavor was ok, i can't place what specifically I dislike about it. read more

What in the midwestern taco joint? Flavors aren't doing justice to the top-notch ingredients and presentation. Had the bistec tacos and the salsa. Everything was under salted and the single note was sweet throughout. The beef lacked seasoning, was served cold, and the tomatoes were cloying. The salsa was even weirder; very sweet, some kind of vinegar flavor dominated, and overall nothing interesting enough to salvage the tacos or desire another chip. They give you a tub of it, so may take it home and spruce it up with some chiles. That said, I'll be back to see if this was an off day or not because they have several other options that are visually appetizing. read more

Horchata swirling around is what got me to try this place out first as it was my first time at the city foundry. order: + spiced potato tacos (3) + horchata 16oz (2) I did appreciate the freshly rolled tortillas and the spiced potatoes tacos were very flavorful. It was build your own tacos which would be good at its own establishment, but it a food hall? Creates a bit of a mess. I didn't appreciate that the cups were completely fills with ice only giving us 3 good sips of horchata before it was just leaving ice to melt for a cup of water. The portions were pretty small as well and I was disappointed that all three tacos had to be the same. I would've liked to try out different flavors. When my name was called he asked if I wanted any hot sauce, offering mild or very hot. I said very hot since my bf loves spicy and mild for me. He told me that they don't usually give out two and treated it like a favor to me even though I said that it was fine to just give me the hot sauce. They were half the size of sample cups that costco usually gives out. I know times are tough, but damn. Just a disappointing experience all around for me. read more

Complete waste of $30.00. Out Sopes de Chicharron was terrible, the corn cakes were burnt on the bottom, and we could not cut through them with our fork or knife. The pork on top was full of fat, and we had to keep spitting it out. Our chips and guacamole were also bad, the chips were completely burnt, and 90% of them were burned to the point they turned brown. read more

I really wanted to like this place more. We stopped by because they were featured in a recent top 100 restaurants in St Louis article that just dropped. This restaurant is located in the wonderful Foundry STL, an awesome cafeteria filled with great vibes and different food offerings! We placed our order at the self checkout kiosk and 15 minutes later, we were served. When we sat at our table our eyes were wide, these look so great! However, when we took a bite into the pork belly tacos, while they were flavorful and well-seasoned, we found the pork belly incredibly hard, like it had perhaps been fried too long or in too high of heat. Unfortunately the same could be said about the tortilla chips. Very hard, slightly beyond crunchy. It was our first time trying Sikil Pak, but it really didn't have much flavor at all. They did offer us a small serving of their habanero sauce, which was tasty and packed some HUGE HEAT! The hero of the night came in the form of their Beef Tamale, served on a banana leaf. Very flavorful and great presentation! While we try to come to the Foundry relatively frequently, we'll probably pass coming here next time. read more

Very tasty! The family ordered three items: Colado style tamale, pibihua (Mayan fried roll) with burnt chili turkey, and tacos/guisados with pulled pork. All were delicious and pretty unique. The owner's brother was working the register and happily explained the dishes in detail when I asked about them. The colado style tamale has a more whipped masa that was almost custard in texture. It had a light but very pleasant corn flavor, with well prepared pork and veggie fillings. The pibihua (Mayan fried roll) was exceptional. The shell is a fried corn masa boat, that was kind of like a large tortilla chip shell - except it wasn't so crispy as to break up, and had a more intense and slightly smoky flavor. Our meat choice was burnt chili turkey, which was tender, moist, and had a very good flavor. The lima bean, pepita, and garlic chive fillings along with the meat made it sort of like a self-contained order of nachos. The tacos come with the meat in a bowl, with corn tortillas on the side. The pulled pork was highly seasoned and so savory. I have to come back and get this place again. read more
