I've been looking for a good haircut spot in Santa Cruz when I can't go back to the Bay for my usual spot. Luckily I found Surecuts which happened to be across the street from my gym, so it was an easy hop over after a workout to get the hair managed. The salon is small and well maintained. I came in October and they were definitely feeling the spooky Halloween vibes. They have a restroom available for use and an arcade machine to burn some time on if you are waiting for your turn. I made an appointment (and they do 30 minute blocks) but was able to walk in early when they opened. Men's haircut is $25 which is a very reasonable price. I worked with Yareli who was very sweet and even offered some life tips while getting my cut done. She was intentional in asking to make sure what I wanted was happening, and that I liked the end product. In about 20 minutes, I was done and dusted with a new fresh cut. You can pay with your digital wallet, card, or cash. Don't forget to ask for a stamp card - your 5th visit will be $5 off! Can't speak to their basic haircut but do not go here if you want even the most basic facial hair/beard touch-up. It is not a barber shop, basically a privately owned version of Supercuts. I just needed the most basic facial hair/beard realignment prior to an engagement photo shoot and the woman looked at the clock every 30 seconds and told me wedding traditions like that are stupid....I ended up just having to just redo the facial at hotel afterward. read more

My hairdresser was nice, but they really specialize in short mens haircuts. I literally have 2 distinct layers in my hair.. I asked for long layers in the back, face framing layers in the front with a subtle U shape. When she showed me the finished cut in the salon, my hair was still wet so I couldn't clearly see where the layers were until my hair dried. I would not recommend coming here if you have long hair. read more

My wife son n I had a great haircut experience with Catrina and Brock at Surecuts. Wow the owner should be very pleased with her staff as we arrived they both gave us a welcome and took us without any appointments. Growing up dad owned a small business near San Francisco so we would get haircuts at an old barber shop with pros in a pressed suit n bowtie with oldies tunes people discussed the current events that's what Surecuts reminded me of. Brock had my son and I. Phenomenal cut on both of us. My son almost 2 years old had Brock and he put a wonderful mohawk on him. Catrina was wonderful with my wife and so much so my wife will have her highlights done at the other salons other location on 41st Ave later this week. Shop was sparkling clean including the bathroom. Definitely will be coming back and recommending this place. They carry made in the USA right here in the golden state Savacito n Savacita for women. Yelp doesn't offer an option for me to contact you directly, Jennifer so I will reply here. The tablet at the front wasn't working when I went in so they told me to just go back. I was there Friday 8/26. A woman with medium length black hair cut my hair that day. I'm not sure what her name is as she didn't not share that with me. ______________ I'm horrified that the woman who cut my hair allowed me to leave with the back of my head looking like this. Not only is it not even close to being even, there's a huge chunk missing. I always just walk into a random spot as I ask for arguably the easiest cut to execute- 1 length, no layers, cut to just above my shoulders (I was having about 10 inches cut off to donate). Usually, the person cutting my hair will tie it into 1 or 2 ponytails and then cut just below my shoulders and work upwards to make sure things are even. I should have known things were taking a bad turn when she braided my hair at the nape of my neck and then used clippers to shave the braid off. This, of course, left my hair way shorter than I had asked and because the braid started so high and pulls hair from 3 different directions/heights, it created a very short area at the middle back of my head with much longer pieces at the sides. Instead of being honest, addressing the situation, and offering possible solutions, she silently tried to blend the weird, choppy areas (it clearly didn't work). The second red flag was when I was not offered the opportunity to look at the back of my head. I figured it was way shorter than I wanted and more of an a-line (barf) but never imagined it would be horribly botched and so uneven, otherwise I would have said something. I was allowed to pay, tip (almost 50%), and leave without anyone saying a word to me about the mess on the back of my hair. So dishonest and gross. I understand that mistakes happen but to not say anything to a client is such a bad practice. I was able to fix it (sort of) but lost another 2-3 inches in an effort to even things out. I stay in Cupertino and didn't have haircut since March 2020 because of COVID. The Salons in Santa Clara county are still closed. So decided to driver to Santa Cruz. Surecuts did a very nice setup in the parking lot under a canopy. The chairs were setup quite far from each other. Everyone was sanitizing the tools after the haircut. Everyone was wearing mask. They take cleanliness and health very seriously, and staff is always masked up. The Sean is fantastic - he's cut my hair on a few occasions and always does a great job. But I came today to leave this review after the best cut I've had in a long time, from LISA! Attention to detail was spot-on. Sean gives great haircuts and I always went to the Seabright location to see him. But, now he has moved to their Capitola location, sister salon Guido's Barber Shop. He gives a great wash and go haircut for me at different hair lengths from a bob to about 14 inches at the longest my hair has been. I'll be going to Guido's now. read more

I came in with a simple request to have my existing undercut shaved down to a 1. I have this touch up done pretty frequently, and most barbers seem to have a pretty easy time not catching my long hair in their clippers. Usually they bun up my hair and hold it against my head when they shave near the line. I was a bit nervous when Samantha loosely clipped up my hair and began shaving, but I figured "she's a licensed cosmotologist, she probably knows what she's doing." I figure that shaving up to an existing clear part line is a pretty basic barber skill. Hell, my boyfriend shaves up my undercut sometimes and he does a decent job... It wasn't until I got home and tied up my hair that I realized she had accidentally nipped literally dozens of my hairs with her clippers. I have whole sections of awkward length wisps hanging down, and several really ugly 1-2 inch hairs poking off the side of my head. I'm not terribly picky with my hair, but I feel like this was pure carelessness and totally unacceptable (I posted a photo of the results). I'm pretty upset because the only way to correct what she did to my hair is to shave my undercut higher, and I really don't want to do that. I do want to give credit to the barber who was working when I went back to the shop later that day (the reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1). He was very understanding. When I showed him my hair he agreed that the cut was unacceptable and gave me a full refund. I don't wish for my review to reflect poorly on the business as a whole. However, PLEASE encourage your stylists to inform customers if they are not comfortable or capable with the job we request. I would have much preferred Samantha had told me at the outset "I don't really know how do that kind of cut" rather than leave my hair looking this bad. read more

A close friend of mine died from brain cancer when we were kids so now every couple of years I grow out my hair, and donate it to children with cancer. I called ahead and talked to a man about getting an undercut. I specifically asked if it was possible to donate my hair and he said they would be able to band it and put it in a bag for me. I said "ok great," and took the next appointment. When I got there it was all women in the shop, so I re-iterated that I wanted to donate it. The woman who did my hair (who never did tell me her name even though I asked while filling out the iPad screen before the cut), said "we don't do that here. But we can give the hair to you and you can do it." I said "ok no problem, I have bands and a ziploc bag in my car." She starts buzzing and let's the hair fall to the floor. A moment later, a guy comes out and immediately started vacuuming into my hair, putting my hair into this vacuum bag with everyone else's... Making it completely impossible to now donate. I said something, she apologized, and gave me a discount... But this can't replace the 2.5 years I've spent growing out my hair in my friend's name. After taking some time to let what happened today settle, I'm at a complete loss for words for them being this careless. To top it off, after getting home and asking my partner, I see the cut is uneven on each side and the back. I'm extremely sad that this happened. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at what a fine salon this is. Lisa was so methodical and asked lots of questions about my hair care routine to make sure she understood what I did to care for my hair. She was so quick I didn't even realize she was done. She did exactly as I asked and I showed her a photo and she was completely honest of what I'd need to achieve that look. The haircut itself was not bad, but just not what I had in mind when I requested a mid-skin fade and paid $5 more for it. At the end of the cut, I noticed that the barber had not used a foil shaver or a straight razor to bald out the sides, but instead used a 000 guard (I presume) to shave the sideburns. Initially, I asked if she would be able to use a shaver or razor to shorten the sides, to which she said no, citing COVID concerns (though COVID is a respiratory, not blood borne, pathogen). I later asked if I could be charged for a regular cut instead of a bald fade, but she denied my request and informed me that other barbers would consider my cut to be a bald fade. This is not true, as ALL barbers I have gone to either use a foil shaver or straight razor to bald out the sides, as the name 'bald fade' explicitly states. To further verify what constitutes a skin fade, I called another local barbershop who confirmed that the cut I had received was indeed not a skin fade. My belief is that if a customer specifically requests a skin fade and pays an additional $5 for it, he or she is entitled to receive that cut. read more
