I generally try to avoid leaving negative reviews, especially when the owner is very kind. However, I feel it's important to mention that I wasn't happy at all with my haircut. I usually get a simple undercut with faded back and sides, but the cut I received here didn't resemble a fade at all. The difference between the longer and shorter sections was very noticeable, and there was no smooth transition. I left feeling upset and disappointed, and ended up immediately going to a different barber to fix it which of course involved paying for another cut. Thankfully, they were able to help, but there's still a spot that couldn't be fixed, so I'll need to let my hair grow out for a proper fix. It's not a huge deal since hair only grows, but it wasn't the cut I was hoping for. I was pretty upset. If you're looking for a general barber fade, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. read more

I went for a stroll yesterday and came upon Plaza Barber Shop. The barber shop was so cozy, welcoming and had such a wonderful neighborhood vibe. And inside, Brock was there to give a great men's haircut. I got a skin fade and he really did a great job. He paid great attention to the hair and really took care of me and did a great job. He also was such a fun, warm and friendly host. We had a great range of conversations - everything that a barbershop can be. The hair cut costs $25 which is a fair price and well worth it. Martha is amazing. Since my boyfriend and I have been dating, he has insisted that I met his barber and get her blessing since (she did not like the last one). Why Martha is amazing 1. The shop's ceiling is covered with customer photos (like some Japanese restaurants do) and yes, my bf is on the ceiling 2. She is a sports fanatic... Martha has tons of bay area posters, pictures, bobble heads and ornaments.. Yes, she is a Giants fan (we don't hold it against her) but to make up for it.. she is a 49er fan... she will put on the game if you request.... 3. 20 bucks gets you the following 1. haircut your way 2. hot foam shave 3. back massage with a massager thingy 4. the mascot of the shop (silky terrier named Buddy) is super chill and friendly 5. Just moved to town and trying to find a barber, thankfully it wasn't to far from my apartment. Upon walking in there were two guys and a lady. Both guys were taken with others so I got my cut from Martha. Great lady, super sweet and nice! Did an awesome job on my hair! One of the best haircuts I've had in a long time! Near the end of my visit she turns on what looks like a buffer but it's a massager! She massages your back too! Definitely worth every penny! Martha was great but from what I saw the other guys there were doing fantastic too! Glad I found this place! read more

This shop is pretty cool! It was my first time there and won't be my last. DJ always gives me the perfect cut. He has been cutting my hair for a couple years now and is always consistent and he is good about getting you in for a cut when you have a busy schedule. I wrote a draft review for Plaza Barber Shop as soon as I got home from my haircut, but before posting, decided to live with it for a while before formulating an opinion; my preliminary rating was (4) stars. Now that it has been (4) weeks, I must say that I'm very pleased with how well hair has grown out. I can't remember the name of the woman who cut my hair, but I think it started with an "M." The entire experience was great starting when I called to get in on a Saturday afternoon -- another customer had just canceled an appointment and I was able to get in just before they closed for the day. Before cutting my hair she took time to gather a some details, including how I wanted it cut and how I planned to wear it. I mention this because many barber shops give only two types of haircuts: short and medium-short. All in all, this place deserves the (5) star rating for great service, quality, and value. I'll probably be calling them tomorrow to set up my next haircut. read more

Can't say I had the best experience here. Brought my son in for a haircut and was alarmed to watch Martha use a straight razor on him. I did not feel comfortable saying anything to her, however I was made aware by a family member that cosmetologists (Martha is not a licensed barber) are not allowed to use straight razors in the state of California. This made me feel uncertain about the sanitation and safety of the shop, considering tools were being used without proper licensing. Will not be returning. read more

The woman who answered the phone LIED about the fact that "due to the AIDS epidemic, it's illegal in the State of California to perform straight-edged shaves" which is patently FALSE. Barbers are licensed to perform shaves, but they can CHOOSE not to. She hung up on me when I confronted her with this lie. Martha has been giving me haircuts since I moved into town back in 2004. I was lucky to find her on my first trip to a local barber, and have gone nowhere else. There's a warm and welcoming vibe in the shop, with lots of San Francisco Giants stuff. She knows me by name, as well as my wife's and even my dog's name, and always asks how they are doing. When I take a seat, I get "the usual", and she gets to work. Finishing off, Martha applies hot lather to the nape of my neck and shaves with a battery-powered razor. The electric massager to relax stiff shoulders is a nice touch. Martha takes appointments, which is great for my hectic schedule, and she'll take walk-ins if there are some openings that day (and if not, just pop over to Gayle's or The Cook House restaurant nearby). read more
