My friends and I went yesterday to the Tasty Thai cooking class at Sur La Table. Located in Brickell City Center, I had always known Sur La Table had great options for kitchen needs - but I had no idea they had cooking classes. We were a group of 3 and were joined by a couple, a mother and daughter and a solo guy looking to go on his own cooking adventure. Chef Rico walked us through our Thai adventure which included shrimp and lemongrass soup, chicken dumplings, and drunken noodles with tofu. I love cooking, and definitely know my way around the kitchen but this class is perfect for folks who may be intimidated by it. They prep everything for you in advance so you don't need to chop much, but they did teach us how to dice scallions in a diamond shape, and mince garlic and ginger on the microplane. The coolest new skill I learned was how to make dumplings! I really enjoyed that and it was so easy that I would definitely make it again. In the middle of the class you take a quick 15 min shopping break (if you participate you get 10% off your purchases in store that day). You can also pop in next door and buy wine, which we got to enjoy in the final phases of cooking as well as while eating. Once all the dishes are done, you eat at a communal table with your classmates. It is such a fun activity and I would totally go back to try some of their other classes. I took the Savoring Grill Season cooking class at Sur La Table with Chef William, and it was such a great experience! We made grilled steak with chimichurri sauce, grilled corn, and a grilled peach salad all finished off with homemade ice cream that had the perfect hint of orange. Everything was so fresh, but the grilled peach salad honestly stole the show the mix of sweet and savory was chef's kiss! Chef William was a fantastic instructor super helpful, patient, and made the class fun and easy to follow. I went solo, and it ended up being such a nice evening. All the ingredients for each dish are organized and laid out for you. If there are any ingredients you are not a fan of or have dietary restrictions, you can generally just leave them out. The instructor, Chef Rico, was great at walking us through the steps and encouraging us to have fun. In the middle, we had a little break to be shown around the store and consider any purchases to use our store discount provided as part of the class. At the end, you eat your meal fresh at a table with all the other participants. Our dishes were very tasty, especially the pad Thai! What an amazing experience!! I got this for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and was so excited when the day of my booking finally came. I chose to do "an evening in Chianti" because we've been wanting to learn how to make gnocchi so this seemed like the perfect dish for us. I this spot is great for a date night or even a double date night because the class is done with groups of four. The chef explained everything great and really helps you throughout the process. We made pesto gnocchi from scratch with a filet mignon which was *chefs kiss* I love the fact that after you make your meal you get to eat in a communal table with everyone else who attended the class. I took a cooking class here and it was a good time! They pre measure everything for you and you get to cook your dinner yourself with some instruction from the chef. Of course, no cleaning which is a huge plus! The dessert we did not get to make, there was a short demo from the chef but the team made the dessert. You can bring your own wine too so be sure to do that! While I had a good time, I did not think the food turned out amazing. Obviously you can say this is our fault but we were following their recipe. Also, they finished our steaks and everyone in classes steak was severely over cooked. I've gone to two cooking classes at this Sur La Table (and am signed up for my first baking class in a few weeks)! First, my sister and I did "Date Night in Paris," where we made steak, salad and roasted potatoes. YUM. First, the food was excellent and we were able to bring our own wine to enjoy while cooking. Chef Dagny was so funny, but so informative. I love cooking and learned so much in less than two hours from her! And, they also give you the recipes, so both my sister and I have already made different elements of this meal at home. Then, my husband and I did a mediterranean class, where we made scallops drenched in garlic aioli, couscous and carrot. Also, YUM and so much fun. Just took the cupcake decorating class this weekend, it was a lot of fun, but I think a little overpriced, especially if you have baking experience. I signed up because I am already a regular baker but wanted to get better at my frosting techniques. We first had to bake the cupcakes, which I don't think needed to be done in real time. I would have preferred them to have already baked the cupcakes so we had more time to decorate, especially since some of the steps had already been done and I don't need lessons on how to stir in flour. I enjoyed learning how to make a swiss mergingue buttercream, something I had not done before and had fun praciticing and decorating the cupcakes, but if felt rushed and I was concerned I would run out of icing. I think when paying for a class you shouldn't worry about running out of supplies if you mess up once or twice but that's what if felt like and towards the end I just had to ice 4 of my 12 cupcakes quickly, which didn't allow me to practice as much as I wanted. The cupcakes were a big hit with my guests later that night. The best part was that I did not have to clean up! Overall the class was fun, but I did not get as much out of it as I wanted. I appreciated that they offered me coffee at the start of class. At the start of class I was a little stressed because when I arrived for the class the door was locked and there was no one to let me in for a few minutes. read more

As a vegetarian I'm very disappointed that such a nice organization like sur la tabla Miami is not inclusive and have no regards for people' dietary restrictions. My husband and I took multiple classes in other stores and they were always able to adapt some recipes for vegetarians. At Sur La Tabla in Miami we had two bad experiences in one month, including a awful customer service experience while handling the situation. On the most recent class we were told to cancel our reservation at the date of the class because they would not make any adaptation, despite the fact we had 4 people on our reservation and we noted on our reservation that I was vegetarian. Before the last class we attempted I even called the store days in advance to make sure they were aware and I was told the chef would call me and they never did. Then on the day of the class I was told they don't make any adaptations and was told to cancel my reservation. They definitely lost a customer. read more

3 More Fantastic Cooking Classes at Sur la Table, Miami, Florida Last month, I wrote a (well-deserved) glowing review of Chef Erick's "Mastering Mediterranean" class at Sur la Table. Since then, in February and March 2024, I have taken 3 more classes here: "Essential Skills for the Home Chef" with Chef Chloe, "Incredible Indian Flavors" with Chef Paolo, and "Savoring Spain" with Chef Dagny. I am happy to report something that cannot be taken for granted at all anymore: My last 3 classes were as fantastic, useful, high-energy, and seriously fun as the first. Chefs Dagny, Erick, Paolo, and Chloe all have their own unique personalities and styles, but each of them is truly a trained professional who obviously loves cooking and teaching (and that combo can't be taken for granted either); they come fully prepared with the help of dedicated colleagues and staff; they know all the nuances of both the dishes being prepared and the ingredients that go into them and answer any and all questions during the cooking sessions, and they guide us neophytes as we prepare each dish of the evening. They are all incredibly likeable and funny, each in their own way. I always wanted to know the "why" of cooking - why spices and herbs behave differently in dishes; why meats, poultry, and fish develop in the pan and oven the way they do; why ingredients are added and prepared in one way and not another - you find all that out in these classes: the chemistry of cooking as well as the pairing of ingredients, all imparted in an informal way as you reach a certain point in dish preparation. I can't say enough good things about the chefs and their classes - top notch all around. I continue making the dishes, or variations of the dishes, we prepared in the classes, at home. One important point: the reason I wrote "seriously fun" above is that the chefs are professionals, and their preparation for their classes as well as the execution in my experience, are all first-rate professional. Everything, down to the smallest ingredient, is ready to go when you arrive to class to facilitate efficiency and smooth operation. While the chefs ask about any allergies, don't expect to have them significantly alter dishes on-site to accommodate various types of cooking: gluten-free, vegan, pescetarian, for example; they'll answer questions about substitutions you can make at home, but since they send out the full recipes from the dishes you'll be making ahead of time, you'll have advance warning of any issues. This is not a free-for-all or a night out at a bar - these are high-end professional cooking classes for amateurs who really want to learn and have a really nice evening with very nice people at the same time.
