Wilderness Trails Animal Park - Swan and Geese at Wilderness Trails Zoo

The cages and homes for these animals are way too small…read more I just visited this zoo with my partner and cannot believe that a place like this is still open in 2025. I've just signed multiple petitions to try and have these animals relocated to a better fitting home. Truly heartbreaking to see.

The entrance, and gift shop, is easily 4 times it's original size; and they always have the cutest collection of plushes. The grounds, and habitats appeared well maintained. The animals were all quite active, playful, and seemed to be healthy; the petting farm area is always a must stop when you visit. The staff are great too; friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The zoo now offers animal experiences for an extra fee, which can be purchased online or at the entrance, adding a more private element of fun. I will say though, I was really bummed that the Rainforest area was now only open as an "experience" purchase. Years ago it was easily my favorite exhibit, but unfortunately is now out of my price range, especially for a family (as I found the experience costs to be a bit high), so we were unable to see it. Overall we all really enjoyed our outing at the Wilderness Trails Zoo. They did a great job keeping the walk area around the zoo shaded, you could find animal feeding stations and hand sanitizer in many locations, seating widely available, a picnic/eating area, prepackaged ice cream bars/dippin dots in store, children's playground, clean restrooms, and plenty of parking available as you first arrive. This zoo is definitely worth the visit, and I'm sure I'll be having another day trip here again soon.

The Detroit Zoo's penguinarium and butterfly exhibits are exceptional, beautiful, worthy, heavenly…read more The train was highly restored and a treat to ride again! However, we were surprised when visiting after having the opportunity to travel and visit other community's zoos. When returning to our own zoo and comparing it to others and our recollection of the Detroit Zoo during its peak years, we wondered what's going on. Care and gardening quality of the property is significantly enhanced. Yet, there are far fewer animals. Isn't this a zoo's primary role. Distance to view animals is further than other zoos. We had to apologize to our out of town guests and remind them that the Detroit Zoo used to be better! Perhaps declining financial support from the City of Detroit over decades negatively impacted upkeep and care of the infrastructure and opportunity to support and care for large animal populations. Detroit Crain's reported that in 2008 and 2010, State of Michigan legislation was enacted to assist the state in preserving the Detroit Zoo and the Detroit Institute of Arts by creating new county taxing authorities with the power to levy taxes in support of the institutions. (Resident taxpayer visitor fees are still required.) Either even after 17 years current funding hasn't replaced what the zoo previously received in its glory days. Or, current leaders have different views regarding the purpose of the Detroit Zoo, animal populations and opportunities for guests to easily see them.

Love our zoo!…read more Historically it has always been a zoo doing the right things for the animals, the visitors, and the community. Consistently through my life this behavior has remained the same. We are passholders since the kids were born and have always felt we got our money's worth. The modern penguin and polar bear facilities are so great to experience and should not be missed. New things are popping up all the time so repeat visits never get stale. The after hour cash grab events are really all over the place and can be a little bit of a nuisance but this isn't uncommon for zoos or equivalent facilities in the modern era. Only once did we arrive on a spontaneous trip to the zoo to discover it was closed for a private event (this was at like 1:00 PM on a Saturday? Not sure what was up with that?). I do have to comment on our last visit to the Zoo Lights where there were two operational changes that made the visitor experience worse in what seemed like unnecessary ways. First, the trail (where they do the extra cost animatronic animals during the year but is decorated for Zoo lights) was being run in reverse direction from normal. My only guess was this was to attract people's attention through creating an artificial line by forcing people to enter through the small door exit instead of the standard wide open area. Maybe just better signage or lighting? Team member on the main path to guide people in? If it wasn't for this reason..I'm not sure what to think. The other was a forced path to direct you into the Events Pavilion where there was entertainment and other activities. Again, I assume this was to 'force' people to these attractions to make sure they didn't bypass. However, the path that was blockaded goes directly next to the Pavilion and we have never failed to notice it. This created a weird bottleneck and rattled our party by having to go directly into the loud and flashy environment at the end of a long trip. Once more..if this wasn't for my above guess..what are we doing? These are minor grievances compared to the years of fun and education the zoo has provided myself and my family. Oh yeah, and the water tower!

So we got apple cider and donuts, the apple cider was great and the donut was good. The play area has a train, and zip lines! My favorite part about porters is the zip line. The issue that happened was on the hayride... in the middle of the hayride, THE STEP PIECE FELL OF MID RIDE! My family and i, alerted the driver but he couldn't hear us and then he finally heard us! We finished off the ride. We were the last ride for the day due to that incident. Ps. If you want to go to a good hayride, don't go to this cheap one!

The amount of food given for $10 a person is a decent value. You just need to call at least a day before to get it and it always included a dessert too. I especially like this option for things that I am not sure if the kids will like but to cook it from scratch would cost me a lot if no one eats it (like their st Paddy's dinner). During the summer and Fall we come here at least a handful of times for different weekends. They have a garage type weekend, blueberry weekend, etc. I heard they are even adding in a ceramic painting/crafting nights. They have a cooler full of fresh apples (all types) and veggies all at a decent price. Owners and staff are always nice and helpful.
