Typically we go to Peking Poultry when we're buying a fresh whole chicken but we were also looking for a rabbit & they were out, so we came to Superior Poultry down the street. I really enjoy the lack of the smell at SP; is it death & carcasses(?) Superior Poultry is extremely clean and the woman running the counter was very helpful. We bought a whole chicken and whole rooster; both killed on site. They have the live options as well but it is whatever they have in stock. (All of the animals in the photos are the ones that are live options.) I couldn't imagine killing a live one as I'm a bit squeamish but my husband is set on getting one for the kids & to let it run around for a day. :( We'll see how I handle that day. The rooster was delicious and had almost a turkey-esque mouth bite. Freshest poultry in the area. Can't miss this place - it's the place with the huge cock, I meant, rooster on it's roof. Be warned, if you can't stand the smell or sight of animals, this might not be the place for you. You might want to mosey into a butcher or Vons for your chicken breasts. Also, during weekends and holidays (asian ones, of course and maybe thanksgiving and xmas) they're hellva busy - so plan accordingly. Also, probably closed on all major holidays. No parking lot for the public - street parking, or the lot next door is $3 all day. I just remember as a kid, this place STANK, but with sanitary conditions and health boards, this place is pretty clean and no longer smells like chicken poop. :) read more

Wow. This place is a trip. I heard they have just about the freshest chicken in town. And the line was out the friggin door. Black people, White people, Brown people, Yellow people, Orange people, Green people, Red people, Fuchsia people, Mauve people....ALL PEOPLE LOVE THIS PLACE. The biggest seller? White chicken at 1.60 per pound. Typical size white chicken? About 5 pounds. But be warned - after they wrap the chicken for you be ready - cuz when I came home and unwrapped the white chicken --- THE FEET, NECK AND HEAD WERE STILL ATTACHED!!!!! This Los Angeles bred White Chicken barbecued the store bought White Chicken on the old school Weber. With VERY LITTLE seasoning. Breast meat cooked to 163 degrees. And... THAT WAS THE TASTIEST FRIGGIN CHICKEN EVER. They sell: Rabbit --- $4.50 per pound. Roosters --- $10.00 per bird. Silkies (chickens with black skin and white feathers) --- $9.00 per bird. Brown chicken --- $8.25 per for a 2-pound bird. Quails -- -(did not get price). Ducks --- $12.00 per bird. The place seems to be very clean and organized. And, like most of Chinatown -- CASH ONLY. My recent visit to Superior Poultry marked the first time I've been to a live poultry market. I've thought about going several times, and I'm glad I finally did. It was a very interesting experience, and in a good way. The entrance area is pretty bare-bones, but impressively clean. You place your order through a large window at the front counter. The lady who was taking orders on the day I went spoke English fairly well, so communication was no problem at all. I ordered two ducks and paid $26 cash. As others have commented, the neck, head, and whole legs are still attached, and I was prepared for that. A few strikes with a meat cleaver, and my ducks were ready to season and roast. They turned out to be the tastiest ducks I've ever had either at home or in a restaurant. There is a very noticeable difference between a frozen duck from a supermarket versus the quality of duck from a fresh poultry market. I'm sold on Superior, and I'll be back soon for a couple of chickens. Highly recommended! read more

Went here the day before Thanksgiving for a peking duck. There was a line about 5 people long, but by the time I went to pull out cash and came back, the line was gone! When I got up to the window, I got to peek into the back and watch all the employees dismembering animals. Very interesting. Lady asked what I wanted, told her duck, and she went to the back to fetch it. Tossed a bag on the counter and charged me $13. I peeked in and noticed that I was going to have to chop off the head and feet. No problem. I just didn't want to gut the guy, which I luckily didn't have to. The atmosphere isn't charming. They don't wrap up your purchase all beautifully. You might even get some duck juice on your hands. But their prices are great and the duck was fresh, and they carry items you can't find easily, so I'll be back. read more

So the staff is kind of rude to me at the counter. The peking duck I got was terrible also. It still had the head. Not a big deal for some people but I didnt enjoy cutting off the head , which was difficult, and the eyes were looking at me. Also the duck had hardly any meat on it. I prefer the place down the street where everyone is nice and you can actually see the meat and pick the one you want. The only reason this isn't one star is because of the price, but the place down the street is the same price so go there. read more

If I could give zero stars for this place I would! I just went there few minutes ago and the elderly woman in the window was unbelievably mean! I usually go there to buy chicken and notice her very BAD attitude. I usually try to understand if she's having a bad day or something but I couldn't today! She is too much. I just left and ended up buying chicken at the other store. To the owner of that store PLEASE TEACH your employees to be at least NICE to the customers. Our family was in China Town for New Year visit. My mom was very interest in the rabbit meat that was offered on the menu. She went up to ask the counter lady what that price was for the rabbit meat (the menu board does not have price at all!) The Chinese lady that was next to the Latina lady immediate told her in bad English " no tell her. she not buying. no tell her." Oh, that just ruined it for my mom. my mom's guess was that Chinese did not think that my mom understands both Spanish and English. My mom immediately asked for the Manager. The Chinese lady's response was, they do not give out the prices unless a product is being purchased. It is the manager's rule. The manager is busy. She refused to go get the manager. My mom immediately call me to report her. The Chinese lady is just trying to hid. She did not have the courage to apologize or to ask for the manager to sooth an angry potential customer. I guess the business is so good that they do not need new paying customers. Or feel the need for courtesy toward customers. My mom was furious. It totally ruined her day. She just wanted to know what the price for the rabbit meat was, since her dad use to make it for her. Obviously, mommy is not happy, no one is happy. read more

Stopped by a week or so ago for the first time. I was a little nervous since I had no idea what I was in for. The lady at the counter was awesome!! Lucky for me no one was waiting so I had time to ask all my questions and make my choice. She took the time to tell my about all the chickens available, their size, texture, taste etc... I decided on two different kinds of chicken and they were exactly as she had explained. Love the idea of fresh poultry. When driving through LA I will definitely stop again. read more
