My initial scan showed me a handsome "older gent" (egads, maybe 55?) was leaning on his forearms against one of the shelves. The Marlboro Cowboy with a Sam Elliot on his upper lip, eyed me. (Inside, I thought, "hm, maybe he's wondering what a woman is doing in a store that sells workboots?") Then he said, "Can I help you with something?" And yes, yes, he could! He actually paid attention to what I said (black only, no copper rivets) and I chose two pairs of shoes in the space of four minutes ($59 and $89). When he moved around behind the cash register to ring me up, his colleagues (two other gents sans fancy facial hair) asked me, "How'd he do?" to which I responded with a shoulder shrug and a "meh" keeping in tradition with the reserve of New Hampshah. The gents smiled and mustache said, "they are trying to get rid of me because I'm too old." To this I replied, "they are just jealous because they can't grow a mustache like yours." Somehow, the store doesn't think it necessary to distinguish between mens and womens apparel. Many womens athletic clothes don't use numeric sizes anymore, using S, M, L. It can be difficult to recognize that one rack has mens and the next one womens This morning I went there to get some shirts and a fall jacket. My shopping was interrupted by a saleswoman who asked me if I was looking for mens clothes. This after I had been in the store for a good ten minutes, mistaking some racks for mens and vice versa. I said I was. She then proceeded to try to explain where the mens clothes were. I didn't quite understand her and needed clarification, what racks are for men? For some reason, she took umbrage at my confusion and replied dismissively about one side of the store being for men. I asked if it included the wall racks. She said the right side of the store was for men, giving me the impression that helping me was low on her priority list. When I said, of course, all stores are men on the right and women on the left, another saleswoman chimed in with an "I beg your pardon." So I repeated myself. I had two shirts worth $200 in my hands and had come in prepared to spend at leadt that much, but after the attitude and treatment I received, I decided to buy what I had and leave. At the counter the saleswoman folded my shirts and then just stuffed them in the bag. I've been shopping here for nearly twenty years. Never again and I will tell everyone who will listen to me about this experience. Shabbiest treatment I've gotten from retail in decades.

We always try to buy local instead of going online and made the half-hour trip hoping to give you our business. My boyfriend came across a shoe he liked, and we were confused because there were no US sizes listed on the boxes, nor a conversion chart anywhere nearby. I saw that the one staff person on the sales floor was with another customer, so I waited until she put on a video for him and while he was watching it, I asked if she could tell me what a US size 12 would be in the European size. She cut me right off and said I can't help you until I am finished with this customer (who was watching a video). I thought, surely she doesn't understand that I just need to know a size so we can find the shoe ourselves. So I politely said, we just need to know the US sizes -- it was barely out of my mouth when she once again curtly admonished me to wait until she was finished with this customer. I was rattled because I realized she couldn't possibly have even listened to me -- no one would ever make a customer wait indefinitely for such simple information. But I wasn't about to ask a third time. We ended up Googling the answer while standing just 5 feet away from her. Later we saw a chart 3 aisles away she could have directed us to. But most of all, we felt humiliated. We really felt we were so unimportant that a customer watching a video was more deserving of assistance than we were. So I did something I hate doing -- I took a picture of the info on the shoe box and we ordered the product online right there in the store in both colors -- about a $400 sale. I had also wanted to buy sneakers for myself, but we decided to go to Famous Footwear in Lee, where we usually go and receive really good customer care. I spent another $200+ there with an excellent salesperson -- who was also alone on the floor dealing with more than one customer. But she was well trained, kind, and a good listener, and I told her so. To wrap up my rant, here is what I most want to share with you: In a world where brick and mortar stores need to compete with online vendors, treating each customer with respect is a must. It's your very lifeblood because it is what differentiates you from the online marketplace. Think about it -- every person who enters your store made an effort to be there, isn't it the least you can do to SEE them and LISTEN to them? Today, the decision to not do that cost your business $600. That may not be a lot of money to you, but at this point, I feel you also lost all of my future business.

Montano's has a variety of high-quality work-boot brands including Red Wing, Chippewa, Thorogood, Danner, Irish Setter, and Timberland. They have a variety of athletic and hiking footwear brands such as Merrell, Keen, Hoka, On Running, and Salomon. There is a selection catered to casual and comfort as well; brands include Dansko, Birkenstock, Blundstone, UGG, and Vionic. Fair warning, it's not cheap to shop here. You are buying pretty much the best-of-the-best with a professional service. Some of these work boots are easily $200+ and the specialty insoles are running $65+ so keep that in mind when shopping. I was able to kill two birds with one stone by buying my stepdad his birthday present and my mom a new pair of shoes for Mother's Day. It wasn't cheap but they are worth it, plus I don't get to see them as much as I would like. The Red Wings he chose were $200, the specialty insoles cost $65 and Mom's shoes were $120. All the items are of high quality and should last them until my next visit, lol. Staff were very friendly and helpful. From the moment we walked in we were treated with respect and one of the associates accommodated both my family members with all of their fitting needs. I just purchased a new pair of Keens recently for work but I was really interested in trying out a pair of Thorogood's. The problem is if I tried them on, I probably would have bought them. I just don't need another pair now but the selection here seems like an excellent choice for a future work boot. I might be back next year once I ware my Keens out.
