My initial scan showed me a handsome "older gent" (egads, maybe 55?) was leaning on his forearms against one of the shelves. The Marlboro Cowboy with a Sam Elliot on his upper lip, eyed me. (Inside, I thought, "hm, maybe he's wondering what a woman is doing in a store that sells workboots?") Then he said, "Can I help you with something?" And yes, yes, he could! He actually paid attention to what I said (black only, no copper rivets) and I chose two pairs of shoes in the space of four minutes ($59 and $89). When he moved around behind the cash register to ring me up, his colleagues (two other gents sans fancy facial hair) asked me, "How'd he do?" to which I responded with a shoulder shrug and a "meh" keeping in tradition with the reserve of New Hampshah. The gents smiled and mustache said, "they are trying to get rid of me because I'm too old." To this I replied, "they are just jealous because they can't grow a mustache like yours." Somehow, the store doesn't think it necessary to distinguish between mens and womens apparel. Many womens athletic clothes don't use numeric sizes anymore, using S, M, L. It can be difficult to recognize that one rack has mens and the next one womens This morning I went there to get some shirts and a fall jacket. My shopping was interrupted by a saleswoman who asked me if I was looking for mens clothes. This after I had been in the store for a good ten minutes, mistaking some racks for mens and vice versa. I said I was. She then proceeded to try to explain where the mens clothes were. I didn't quite understand her and needed clarification, what racks are for men? For some reason, she took umbrage at my confusion and replied dismissively about one side of the store being for men. I asked if it included the wall racks. She said the right side of the store was for men, giving me the impression that helping me was low on her priority list. When I said, of course, all stores are men on the right and women on the left, another saleswoman chimed in with an "I beg your pardon." So I repeated myself. I had two shirts worth $200 in my hands and had come in prepared to spend at leadt that much, but after the attitude and treatment I received, I decided to buy what I had and leave. At the counter the saleswoman folded my shirts and then just stuffed them in the bag. I've been shopping here for nearly twenty years. Never again and I will tell everyone who will listen to me about this experience. Shabbiest treatment I've gotten from retail in decades.

The young woman who came over was clearly poorly trained in customer service or else failed to gain the most basic customer service skills because she immediately suggested it was my fault for not waterproofing the boots. I showed her the tag on the boots which says "Waterproof." Then she said it was probably my sweaty feet. She did not examine the soles or seams because she didn't want to touch my "dirty boot." When I asked to see the manager and followed her to the office, she shooed me away, presumably because she didn't want me to hear what she was going to say. The manager offered store credit and I would have had to give my boots to her then and there. Leaving me to go home in my socks? I told her that I was a loyal customer for many years and had bought footwear from them when I could have got it cheaper online, but I like to support local businesses. I told her that she had lost a customer. Next time I'll try shoes on for fit and then order online for a better price and hassle-free returns/refunds. Some local businesses do not earn loyal customer support.

Eagle Shoe & Boot saved my shoes!…read more Since I am in Great Barrington for a little while, I'm doing my best to patronize the businesses here, but have been frustrated at the lack of great service (so far, both dry cleaners in town have completely screwed me over), so when I ruined one of my shoes, I figured I would have to toss the pair, or take them home to Boston to get repaired there. However, figuring I would give a local merchant ONE LAST TRY, I went into Eagle Shoe and handed over my sad shoe, and the nice guy (who I think is the owner) said it would be no problem and I could pick it up the next day. My shoe was repaired for just $8, no tossing of an expensive pair needed, and my faith in humanity has been restored.
