Compared to other area bars, they have sourced bottles directly from mezcaleros in Oaxaca and other DOM states (vs average bottles you find at most other area bars e.g. Union, 400 Conejos). Presentation is traditional with sliced fruit & crickets. So why only 3 stars? Pricing!! Holy Cha-Ching as these prices are even more expensive than you would find in most US mezcal bars. For example, they have a flight of 6 pours (maybe 1oz each) for $53 USD! They have a Borrego that is going for $26 a pour...thems Las Vegas baller room prices! I dig it but I've not encountered those prices anywhere else in Mexico or most places in the US. Great space tho, and I hear the food is excellent.

We started coming to El Refugio back in early 2018 when they were in their old location near the park. The new location is much bigger but hasn't lost their charm, it still feels like coming home when you walk down the alleyway. Do not leave without doing a mezcal tasting, it's worth it just to read the descriptions of the different mezcal on offer. Everyone who works there is an absolute delight. They also offer cooking classes which I highly recommend. We have done cooking classes in several other cities in Mexico and I can honestly say learning from Noel is an honor and a treat not to be missed.
