We were so pleasantly surprised that the hotel was so enjoyable considering the low reviews. The room was spacious, very clean, bed very comfortable, the bathroom was clean and the towels were white. We have been traveling for more than a week and this was the most comfortable nights sleep we have had so far. The hotel staff were friendly and personable. There is a Mediterranean restaurant that is phenomenal that is not too far away. Definitely worth it to try! Cons: Breakfast was just meh. The food was cool and nearly empty at 7:30am. My room had a light near the shower that wasn't working so it was a bit darker in the bathroom, but the light by the sink worked. That is an easy fix "hopefully". The main con is because someone tried to break into my truck and trailer. Fortunately they were unsuccessful because I double checked all the locks. Another guest was not so lucky. They had a large tool box stolen. That guest was filing a police report as I was leaving.

I haven't stayed here yet, but I have eaten at the restaurant and toured the lobby area. El Rancho Hotel opened in 1937 and was built to be a place for people in the film industry to stay at while filming movies in Gallup. Several western movies were filmed in the surrounding area during the 1940s and 1950s. There is a lot of history to this hotel. Many movie stars have stayed here including John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and Ronald Reagan. In the lobby area are several photographs and memorabilia that pay tribute to El Rancho's rich past. Historic El Rancho Hotel is located on historic Route 66. You can't miss its neon sign out front. In addition to rooms, it has a restaurant and a large gift shop. We came here one night to explore the hotel and walk through the gift shop. A gentleman welcomed us and shared with us his many stories about this hotel. We enjoyed his company and he mentioned to us that there is a secret room upstairs. We eventually figured out how to access the room and enjoyed how its decorations pays homage to the past. The courtyard area in front of Historic El Rancho Hotel has chairs to sit and relax on. The upstairs balcony also has chairs. The lobby is my personal favorite place in this hotel because of its grand staircase and the many black and white photos on the wall. We ate at the restaurant one time and enjoyed the New Mexican cuisine that they serve there. Someday I will probably stay here. But if not, exploring this place is still fun and a nice throwback to the old days of Hollywood.

The breakfast area was clean and well maintained and it was good to find a couple protein choices among the carbs. Though, I will add that the eggs looked a little dry and had been out for a while. Checkout was easy and again the AM clerk was very friendly. It was nice to be back on the road in the morning refreshed and with a full belly. Kudos to all the housekeepers and staff for a nice stay.
