Super 8 Effingham, IL Reserved the Handicapped Room for one night travel stop. The motel is a little older, but this was probably the best outfitted accessible bathroom I've ever stayed. There was a bath chair, a hose-sprayer, and more grab bars no matter where you needed them. There was also plenty of room to maneuver with my walker. Comfortable furniture and outstanding lighting on the bedstead. The door was right inside the main door, which made my back and knees really grateful. One thing that might bother others is that entry and lobby noise is apparent. Luckily, it didn't bother me, especially when it was explained that it makes it easy for the front desk to make sure the occupant able to get immediate help if necessary. The manager, Myriah went out of her way to make my move in and departure much easier (to the point of handling my luggage.) TJ, the night clerk, made sure I had anything I needed. The neighborhood is loaded with more restaurants than I could count. I had to go out to grab a drive-thru meal because most of the places closed too early for delivered meals by the time I was ready. Very surprised by this Hotel, and in a good way !! Never been a Super 8 fan but this one is far superior to many others. Very clean, friendly staff, really nice well maintained rooms !! Will stay here again if I come through this way again !! But, I will say if you don't like the smell of cigarette smoke, this could not be for you. I am no longer a smoker, but the smell in the hallway didn't bother me. I have a non smoking room and cant smell any smoke in here so it must be well ventilated. read more

Clean sheets, clean room, clean bathroom. Polite, friendly staff. Comfortable king sized mattress, soft pillows. The heat was on and set at 68, and the air temperature felt 68. I turned it down a little for sleeping, and we were comfortable. Microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, hair dryer, tv all worked. Breakfast the usual Super 8 fare: oatmeal, cold cereal, toast, waffles. I was happy to find yogurt and apples. Pretty good coffee. There are nearby restaurants and a Walmart if you're interested in other food. The lobby smells of mildew, and the hall smelled of something burnt, but the room only smelled faintly of cleaning products. Pets are allowed. read more

A good solid three stars. Nice, clean room that seems to be recently remodeled. Nice paint and fixtures, above expectations for a Super 8. It's a little pricey for what you get but the mattress is comfortable, the air blows cold. The air was on when I arrived, plus points for that alone. Continental breakfast is nice, although Farmer Brothers coffee is swill to me. Plus points for having a DIY waffle iron. No elevator. If you have a wheeled conveyance, or a physical disability of some sort, ask for a first floor room and enter from the rear. There's a five step drop from the lobby to the first floor and an equivalent climb to get to the second floor. The property is convenient to I-57 and is located in the heart of franchise row. There's even a Wally World down the street. It is also a short drive to downtown Effingham, if you have need to visit. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would stay here again if I found myself in south central Illinois. read more

We stay here on our trips to Tennessee. Its inexpensive and generally quiet. The last few times I have found myself waiting a while at the front desk for check in. It might be because were usually there late at night, but it can be frustrating waiting 10 minutes to check in at 11pm when you are ready to just go to sleep. I will say on my last few stays I thought the cleaning could be better. We had a filthy chair on one visit, and on another the best stand looked like it may have had some human fluid on it. I was driving across the country from California to Boston and stayed here for one night. It was nice and had everything I needed. The previous night had been spent in a Motel 6 which was an absolute ****hole with no running water. For the same price, everything in this Super 8 was much nicer and more comfortable. I reaaaally didn't want to pay $70 for 8 hours of sleep, but this place is actually pretty swank for a Super 8. It's *almost* "hotel", the room doors are down an inside hallway, with two floors. If it was ten bucks cheaper I'd have given more stars. I am driving from Portland, OR to NYC and basically just need a place to sleep every night, where my stuff won't get stolen out of my car- nothing fancy. I landed in Effingham, coming from Kansas this morning. This place seems ok. The rooms have new carpet, modern furniture and fixtures, AC, micro, fridge, coffee maker, ironing board, flatscreen tv and desk with office chair. My room has a comfortable king sized bed. Free fast wifi. The bathroom is standard, clean motel fare. My toilet is dripping. Yours probably won't. They have an award or three in the lobby for their service, one of them being from some sort of pet agency. So apparently they are pet friendly. Mention your AAA or AARP card and that'll basically take off the tax. Book online or over their annoying phone reservation service and that might knock off five more bucks. You can do it from the parking lot. Effingham's motel prices are a little bloated, considering it's not exactly a vacation destination or anything, but the upside is that there is a lot of stuff close by. You can walk to the Walmart (where I grabbed a beer to write this review) and there's plenty of places to grab food (typical suburban shopping town sprawl). read more

The short is that, for the most point, this is an adequate 2-Star level hotel. However, if you suffer from any type of respiratory allergy or ailment, you may wish to avoid this hotel, or at least inspect the pubic areas and your room before committing to staying. I must point out that this was a Priceline deal: for us, only the 2nd "Fail" of a deal in the past 15 years and dozens of transactions. I am fully aware of how Priceline works and how one is leaving many elements to chance in exchange for the possibility of a good deal. For that part, I fully accepted the risks, and financial loss for this deal like a big boy. That said, I will review those elements I can intelligently address. Front desk staff was extremely friendly, hospitable, and cordial both on the phone in advance of our visit, and in person upon arrival. I usually call ahead to see about getting a type of bed set up, and preferences for non-smoking / no pet rooms due to allergies in the family. I was unable to call until early afternoon of the day of our arrival -which was going to be very late. Due to this being a Saturday and the entire area being booked up, we were unable to deal either condition. However, I was told my assigned room was non-smoking. I have no doubt that had I called earlier the staff would have been more than accommodating with the bed issue within their abilities. The hotel and grounds are what I expected for this level of a hotel. No surprises here. Parking was adequate even for a 10 PM arrival, and was well lit. The inside décor was also what I expected from this level of hotel. Adequate, older, but in reasonable condition. Immediately upon entering the hotel hallway from the rear door nearest our room, I smelled a noticeable aroma of moisture/mildew and possible old cigarette smoke in the stairwell. The aroma, minus the smoke, continued into the upstairs hallway. My room was designated non-smoking. I was asked to sign a form that indicated that I would be charged $250 for cleaning of the room if signs of smoking were found upon my departure. I expected no problems. As I inspected the room, it was clean with a slightly worn carpet - again acceptable. Bathroom was clean. However, the windows were covered heavily with internal moisture. The room AC was set for 60 F (outdoors was humid and 95F). The air smelled stale, mildew-like, and I thought I detected an aroma of stale cigarette smoke. I checked the AC filters and they were clean (a bit plus for housekeeping on this point). Under the circumstances had I been traveling alone, I would have probably run the AC, opened the window, and hoped for a venting effect to make it through the night. I was getting a slight respiratory allergic response from the room, but a pill and I might have been okay. However, I was traveling with my wife and daughter. My wife reported a mild allergic response to the stairwell and hallway air, but decided to see if the room would be better. Within a minute of being in the room, she had an asthma attack that required her inhaler. This was her first need of an inhaler in weeks (and had been heavily traveling the past 3 weeks). She said the room definitely smelled to her of stale, and long-term usage of, cigarettes. She attributed that to the most probable reason she had her attack. I returned our keys to the front desk and advised the attendant that we could not use the room and would be traveling on to look for further lodging in Champlain area. The attendant was very apologetic and genuinely seemed concerned for our wellbeing. She offered twice to attempt contact with other hotels on our behalf, which I declined. No refund or offer of one was discussed by either of us, due to this being a pre-committed Priceline deal. From a maintenance standpoint, I have on occasions been in rooms that had been smoked in but were adequately cleaned and vented out. This did not appear to be the case with this room. The aroma was too strong to have been just a violation that had been cleaned up. Both my wife and I questioned whether the $250 fine ( if ever given anyone ) was just pocketed by the hotel as opposed to using it to adequately clean a room. read more

Can't say enough about the location and friendliness of this area. Every trip across country we have made includes this stop for the night. Everything you need is walking distance and it's a great way to get out and stretch your legs after driving for the day. The rooms are clean, nice big pillows, and firm beds. The breakfast isn't as substantial as a few others in the chain, but is ample to get you started for a day of travel. They even have Farmer Brothers coffee! Fresh and piping hot. Everything you need for the night of good rest. The staff is excellent and super friendly, making you feel like old chums. read more

A previous guest stated that this motel has a musty smell. It did, but all carpets have since been professionally cleaned. All rooms have recently been painted, and I honestly cannot say enough about how detailed and professional the cleaning staff are. I've been a guest at this motel for a couple weeks for work and have only good to say about this place. The beds are comfortable, and even on the busiest weekend its relatively quiet. The people at the front desk are always friendly and helpful and they do an excellent job. This is not a 5 star hotel, there is no pool, parking can get tight but it deserves a solid 4 for a job well done. read more

Room was clean and air conditioner was on which was very nice after coming in from the heat. I did have a large ant on my pillow but after looking around we found no other critters. Bathroom is a bit small but adequate (however with 4 adults sharing it was quite cramped). Luckily I brought an electrical strip in order to accommodate all our electronic items. However, there is plenty of desk space to handle purses, computers and various luggage items. Refrigerator was small but a nice amenity for our water bottles. Lobby is small but I found it quiet enough (even with the staff discussing work) to work on my tablet with the free wi-fi. For a one night stop it's definitely worth the stay. read more

Your results may vary. We booked two rooms- a king and two queens. The price was the same for each- around $70 as reported, which was on the low end during a trip where we were encountering really high prices all over the country, even on weekdays. The king room was close to four stars for the price, recently renovated and, according to the person who slept there, very clean and comfortable. The only thing wrong was a missing drain plug in the sink. The room with two queens was...barely two stars. Holes in the walls and missing paint where fixtures had been removed. A horrible perfume smell in the room- not sure whether that was a cleaning solution or a previous guest had dumped body spray everywhere. Noisy air conditioning. And the shower combined a very deep bathtub, almost like a discount brand jacuzzi but with no jets, with an absolutely terrible showerhead that mostly produced a stream of water, very little spray, and impossible to adjust. So bathing is only fine if you're an 8 year old who likes to swim in the bathtub. I don't know if the showerheads are all the same throughout the hotel, but if they are, they need to be replaced. As others have mentioned, all rooms but one are either up or down a flight of stairs. The front desk staff was reasonably friendly and breakfast was an assortment of typical hotel carbs- cereal, toast, waffles and the like, along with some apples. read more

This is a great little place, especially for the price. Granted, it isn't a five star hotel, of course. But, it is only $50, and this is a very nice Super 8. The beds and pillows were firm and comfy. The previous poster was incorrect, however. There is an entrance that doesn't require stairs, so ADA compliance is met. The front desk was pleasant, and we didn't have any issues. Breakfast, like at most hotels, is lackluster, and wasn't all that appealing, but for $50/night, I didn't particular care. read more

Considering that I just drove from Oklahoma and realizing that I couldn't continue safely, I found this Super 8. Only wanting a clean bed and shower with a cool room, I got what I wanted. The decor is 1982 bachelor pad hand-me-downs and the color choices resemble 15 years before that. But the bed was comfy,the pillows quite nice and the sheets were clean. The bathroom was again nothing special, but clean and did the job! The air conditioner was a bit in the noisy side with the fan, but when the compressor turned on, it was quite a rattle. I was too tired to care after about 10 minutes and it wasn't annoying again until morning. There was a card with the survey to ask if any of the appliances in the room need any work, so my impression is that they will replace what they need to when someone complains. I'd say go for it, especially when your expectations aren't too high. read more

Definitely not a five star motel (lol, is there one???) but I would stay here again. Actually for the poster that said something about ADA compliant, I actually stayed in the room accessible for the handicapped. Very nice and spacious, my only complaint is that the tv had extreme static. Not like I even took time to watch it long...after 13 hours of straight driving I could care less what was on. The main reason I chose this motel is because they are pet friendly (thank goodness) and it is close to fast food and walmart. I really couldn't ask for more. Also it is right off of the highway, no way possible to get lost. Had a fridge, microwave, and small coffee maker. Also had a complimentary breakfast which was good for my pup, although another small complaint...no peanut butter. He loves his peanut butter toast. But like I said, overall I had a good stay. The room was clean and quiet...and the check-in was easy. Although my key card didn't work the first time, it was easily re-programmed. read more

The smell that hit you as you walked into this room was pretty awful. Even though it was tidy-obviously, a pet had soiled the carpet and someone tried to shampoo it. It was intense. We were glad to be able to bring our dogs but, yikes! The pet walking area was lush and great for the dogs, but the parking lot was surrounded with trash and it was a scary area. read more

My wife, infant, and I stayed at this hotel. We had originally booked for 4 nights, but ended up canceling our reservation after the first night. When we arrived, the front desk ladies were rude and non-chalant, even complaining about other guests right in front of me. I brushed that off, knowing the hotel was a cheaper one. However, when getting into the room, there was a very stale odor. There was also a rock on top of one of the paintings in the room, very odd to me. The bathroom door was broken and would not close at all, and the shower literally screeched when using it. I had to fight with the ac/heater all night because the thermostat was not working right. My wife and I woke up in the morning barely able to breathe due to the dust/odor. The breakfast was a joke. There were two type of cereals, a waffle iron with no batter, some bread, and some old bananas. My mother came to help us check out and she said the air had an acidic taste to it. It was hard for her to even be in the room due to the sulfur odor. I went down and checked out and canceled the rest of our stay and the desk attendant rolled her eyes at me and made a rude gesture. I will not be staying there again and would advise anyone else to avoid this hotel. read more
