Even though it was the day after Christmas and they had no other guests, the owners, Mark and Dixie, were still nice enough to open up their B&B to us. The drive to get there from North Springfield was beautiful - very pastoral. This area, just outside of Rogersville, is called Compton Hollow. I was a little surprised when we pulled up to see that the B&B itself is in a building with metal siding and roof. However, the inside is as warm and cozy as you would ever want, with hardwood floors, beautiful wood trim, a nice little table for eating or playing games, and a large comfy couch for visiting, watching TV and movies (they have a vast library) or listening to music. Mark gave us a tour, and the rooms are all well decorated and appointed. Each has a country feel, but they all very slightly on different themes. We stayed in the Panther Valley Room, which seemed to be the most romantic. It had a huge and very comfy king bed, a two person air tub, as well as a full bath with a shower. There was bubble bath and many other personal care items provided, plus a bowl of chocolates. The building is built on a hillside, so you enter on the upper floor. Downstairs, there is a huge, beautiful kitchen where Mark makes huge, beautiful breakfasts (and sometimes dinners too). There's also a large dining table and space for groups to gather, as they often host quilting and scrapbooking retreats. We had very limited cell service on our Verizon phones (which was a good thing for helping us to unplug), but the free wi-fi service seemed very solid for the hour or so that we used it during our stay. The weather was cold and rainy, so we did not get out and enjoy the 40 acre property during our visit, but we did see that there is a nice big wooden deck at the back of the building that looks into the woods and is used for weddings. Mark said that they are working on creating trails through the property for visitors to enjoy. Mark and Dixie are the nicest folks you'll ever meet. We chatted with them at breakfast, and it was like talking with old friends. I loved everything about this special place.

Perhaps some time ago they were in better shape, but they clearly have been neglected for a long time. The description on the website states that the cabins were recently renovated, but it is clearly incorrect, as they are in serious need of maintenance. The photos do not match the accommodations at all. The cabins reek of mold and mildew. The carpeting is dirty and old, and for some reason there is carpet in the bathrooms (more mildew). The air conditioners were practically clogged with dust, and there was dust on the walls and on the ceilings. The A/C barely put out enough air and took a long time to cool the cabins. The cabins felt very rickety and unsafe, especially the decks. Locks on doors were flimsy. There was a hole in the wall of one of the cabins we rented. Showers did not work right and the bathtubs did not drain well. The beds were small and uncomfortable. While there were screens on the windows, there were such large gaps in the frames that bugs could easily get in; as a result, the cabins were full of them (ranging from moths to spiders to mosquitoes and flies). There are multiple unfinished or ruined buildings on the property. The pond closest to the cabins is almost dry and is more like a swamp that breeds mosquitoes. The other pond is a bit bigger, but very overgrown and dirty. To add insult to injury, Kyle, the man assigned to take care of the cabins during our stay appeared to be under the influence of drugs for the majority of the time and behaved unprofessionally towards me and my friends, at one point walking out on the deck of his cabin with no clothes on while we were having dinner. Mansfield Woods Vacation Cabins is among the worst establishments I've ever stayed at. I would never again stay there, and advise others to stay away as well. I lodged multiple complaints against Mansfield Woods with the state agencies.

The grounds, including the swans and ducks, really help re-energize your spirit. Innkeeper Cheri is delightful and friendly, without being overbearing. I found it very neat and convenient that she will communicate with you via text, rather than a knock on the door or a call; that really adds to the relaxing feel of the inn. The showers for camping were musty though, would suffocate you in mildew smell while u shower and your only other option is the other ones closer to the campsites which I wouldn't even step into. Definitely no bare feet in either shower and make sure you don't touch the walls. The float was super fun and beautiful, the boat guys were nice until our last morning, we hadn't even checked out yet let alone there was no info on a checkout time and were not near home or know the area much. We figured we would let the kids swim one last time before heading out and get some fishing in, we were all packed up. My children and I floated down the rapids and caught ourselves at the sand bar of Dawt Mill that we were just staying at. One of the boat dudes asked if i was staying at Dawt mill I said yes but we were checking out today. He then said well then you need to get the hell off our sand. right to me and my children. I got upset and said some words to the guy and asked his name for being so rude. He then told me none of my fucking business. I got out on the other side of the water walked up to the front desk. The guy had already ran up there with his buddy and told front desk whatever he told them. The front desk had no manager on site at first then the lady proceeded to say she was the assistant manager but wouldn't give me her name or the boat guys name. She gave no eye contact and treated me like a pest, She then said checkout was at 11am so just shrugged her shoulders about how he acted, and then said "that's not what she heard" and then rudely said sorry we've been getting a lot of ppl not staying here going on our sand so he was probably just frustrated. Which is not my problem when he made me feel so unwelcome and uneasy, ruined my last morning and we weren't even hanging out on the sand we just got off the rapids there cuz it was easier with my children in stow. I didn't think I'd be so unwelcomed not even an hour after the checkout time. After not being able to assist me properly she called the boat guys manager who then said that it should've been okay for us to swim there since we were just there staying out of the way and the guy just probably didn't remember me and that he was sorry for what happened etc, I said thankyou for the sorry and consideration and I was glad there was actually someone with customer service around, but we just loaded up and left and not sure if we will ever be back. However, I'd make most of my meals in the cabin and just do a dinner in the restaurant. One thing that's nice is they will cook your catch in the restaurant and prepare to your specifications.
