This place seems to have turned around 100% since the new owner took over according to past reviews. The new owner Kang was incredibly affable and made conversation with us, plus they have loyalty cards so if you go 10 times, you get a free manicure. APPOINTMENTS ARE HIGHLY SUGGESTED. Because they are so detail-oriented and have 1:1 customer service, you may wait over an hour if you're a walk-in, like the lady who was in the shop while my friend and I were getting our nails done. Also, budget time to get your nails done. My friend and I were at the salon for 3.5 hours because there was only one employee (Y) doing our nails. She did my pedi and both me and my friends' manis. This wasn't a problem and the vibe of the salon is super quiet and nice, and we didn't have anything else to do. But I can see this being a problem to somebody who has other things to do. This was the best manicure I've ever had. Y did an amazing job and truly cared about giving me what I asked for. Kang also gave me a really nice foot and calf massage that was included. Plus, the pricing was really not bad. $180 for a pedicure (with chrome), builder gel with 3D accents and French tip, this would all be $250 at another salon for worse quality. I peeked in the window today to see an empty salon and just as I was going back and forth on whether or not to go in the door opened and I was greeted by two smiling faces. The vibes were good so I decided to go in. Initially I was just going to get a gel pedicure but as soon as I sat down and one of the ladies helped me adjust the massage chair I decided to get a mani too. Jen did my pedicure and Y did my manicure. Both had very nice attention to detail and at some point between a flow state and sensory experience I think I fell asleep. It was very relaxing! Jen has very strong hands and I upgraded to an extra 10 minute massage. I would have paid for an hour if that was available! I asked Y for super short nails and she accommodated me with finesse. I particularly loved the scrub and the steaming hot towels they used. I chose a very subtle natural pink and it looks so pretty in the sun. Also, it should be noted that their massage chairs are excellent! **I went in today it's NEW OWNERS as of two months ago so ignore previous reviews as it's new owner and all new staff** I rarely ever review places but I had to take the time to review Sunset Nails because wow... the service and the quality was amazing! You can tell the owner really really cares about the outcome and they take their time doing your nails. They use all organic oils, polish remover, etc. You won't feel rushed. You'll feel taken care of. According to other reviews, there was a change in ownership in the last 6 months and while I didn't visit before, you can absolutely tell they are doing it right and well now!! As of July, the acrylic set (w gel) was $60 and that's the best deal I've seen in a while (many places around here are charging $150+ for a set). I added $30 for a tip because I was so stunned at the price; I thought it was going to be $100+ just for the set. I honestly feel like they are worth more because of the quality of the nails and the time they take! For those wanting to go, I do recommend calling ahead / making an appointment. There were a couple people who came in as walk ins and were not able to be accommodated due to appointments. read more

It's been 2 days and the nails are peeling off. They were really overpriced for a simple design with no extensions ($85), and cost twice as much as quoted. My cuticles on the other hand started bleeding because she was ripping them out too fast, but I was honestly fine with that. The price is just not justified given the service, and the nails are not lasting. read more

I don't write reviews often but I did not enjoy my experience here. I made appointment for hard gel over the phone for 5 pm and came in and it seemed not super clean. Wasn't anyone else there, and nail tech had me sit down. I asked for hard gel or builder gel for a little extention but I wanted to do forms and she expressed how annoyed she was, there was zero prep or cleaning, she rushed the hard gel so there's some weird angles and looks pretty thick and clumpy on some parts. Also no dust collector and not her fault but there was a lot of dust with the e file and she had her mask while I did not and the hard gel dust was in my face and I was a little uncomfortable trying not to breathe it in. I wasn't aware of the price before but she said the price will be $20 more with the forms (which I'm ok with cause I know it's more technique) and $20 for French tip (which I decided not to do). So the hard gel with natural pink no design was $85 and while I didn't really enjoy my experience, I still tipped $10. Maybe the other people who have gone enjoyed their experience but overall I don't think it was worth the price or service and I will find another place. read more

I had a disappointing experience at this salon. I walked in and asked if they could do a gel manicure, and the nail tech said it would work. However, the entire service felt extremely rushed. She finished my gel manicure in about 10 minutes because she had another client waiting for an appointment. I was not told in advance that the service would be rushed or that she didn't have enough time. A gel manicure done properly should not be completed in 10 minutes. Unfortunately, my gel polish started peeling within a week, which is unacceptable for a gel service. If there wasn't enough time to do the service properly, it would have been better to let me know rather than rushing through it. read more

I had seen sunset nails a couple times walking on Irving and I decided to call them today to get my nails done before going out. They said they could take me in so I walked over and was there in 5 mins. Nancy did my manicure. I don't write a ton of reviews but Nancy made me feel so taken care of, I couldn't not. She even showed me some of her other nail work she had been working on and I'm excited to go back for a pedicure next week. omggg I almost forgot but what really took the cake for me was I had chipped one of my fingernails yesterday and was sad bc I figured she'd have to cut them all small to make them even but she ended up putting an acrylic nail over it and shaped it perfectly to look like my natural nail! I found this salon through Yelp and wanted to try it based off of their solid reviews. I came in for a gel French manicure (gel because I wanted it to dry quicker for time efficiency). I walked in a few minutes after they opened and was seated immediately. It's a small little salon with 3 manicure tables and 4-5 spa chairs for pedicures. It was $50 and they prefer payment and tip in cash. I didn't catch the name of the technician who did my nails, but she got the job done. I wanted something simple for a wedding and she delivered. She filed my natural nails into an almond shape and we did a layer of natural polish before adding the white tips. I came in with pretty long natural nails, but after filing, they became a little short and stumpy.. Upon closer inspection, the sides of the nails don't really have enough polish and the cuticles didn't receive too much TLC, but from far away it gets the job done. read more

I expressed my concerns and they gave me a gift certificate for a re-do when I could return. While I wasn't pumped, nothing is perfect and I suspect I caught them on a bad day so I was super grateful. I just got my nails done again (gel) and got some cool hologram flecks and it only took 35 mins for a mani pedi which was wonderful, except my nails peeled, chipped, and discolored after 2 days with barely using my hands (no crafts etc!) If not for their cheap pricing for SF I would have bumped them down to 1 star. 1. They did not change gloves in between customers that was my first red flag. Sanitation of nail instruments were not done properly either and they did not change towels as often as needed. My sister had to share a towel they already used on another costumer as they did her nails. That is disgusting. 2. The lady drilled so hard and when I went home I was bleeding a little on my middle finger right hand. I posted a picture of my left hand on this review to show how thick they applied the gel. It was also uneven. I didn't post, but there are huge clumps of gel stuck underneath my nails, which shouldn't happen. My mom works as a nail tech and when I went home she had to fix their mistakes. I was hoping to get it done here so I didn't have to bother my mom before my sister's wedding. 3. The boss lady is insensitive and fat phobic. She called my sister béo which translate to fat in English. My sister is plus size but that gives them no right to shame her. 4. When I was trying to check up on my sister as they have placed the heater to close to her making her uncomfortable, the lady murmured that I was annoying. She then proceeded to curse me out saying in Vietnamese "khó chịu" and "con ranh năng này" which is a rough translation of picky ass bitch. They only said sorry once they found out I understood them. Again my mom works in this industry, I know this is not normal behaviors if the salon were ran by a professional person and not a gossip lady. Just "move" no please, no excuse me. While she was trying to get behind me. I really couldnt move anywhere as my hands were being painted and there's no where to go! And the stand where you pay was literally behind me. But that's not my problem. At least say "please." That was it for me. Very rude, not service oriented, no basic courtesy or manners. You can't chuck everything off to a language barrier, when it comes time to pay, there's no problems in communicating. Very cramped space, no massage or frills at all, price fair I suppose at $45, but any other place in the city will do the same, if not a better job, with better ambiance.
