Grand Lake Theatre was built in gorgeous art deco architecture, and makes you feel like you've been thrown back into the heydays of when visiting the cinema was a formal outing. There's a chandelier hanging above the ticket booth at the entrance, and there's a grand staircase with giant paintings and more chandeliers leading up to the theaters on the second floor. Most recently, I came here to see Frankenstein the second-to-last day it was being shown here. It was my second time seeing Frankenstein in theaters, and Grand Lake was one of the theaters listed that had it playing, so I came out here on a Tuesday night to enjoy their $6 Tuesday deals. Ngl, parking in this area is absolutely horrid. I spent at least 20 minutes circling the block, driving up and down Grand Ave, and driving through the residential areas to find parking. I was very hesitant to park in the parking lot that's just a short walk down the street from the theater because I saw homeless people loitering in that parking lot, so I was very nervous of parking my car there. Ultimately, I did resort to parking there when I had no other options, and I am very grateful my car was fine.

The seating is comfortable, with a home-like feel--cozy couches that make it easy to settle in and enjoy the film. That said, there were a few drawbacks. The popcorn wasn't great, which is always a bit disappointing for a movie night. The wait staff also came across as rude, which took away from the overall vibe. Another surprise was that they only accept cash and don't offer tap-to-pay options, which feels outdated, especially for Oakland. It was interesting that the lobby was busy and lively, yet the actual screening only had about four people in it. The space clearly leans into a community-focused, multi-use model, and they host other events that could be fun depending on what you're looking for. It feels very Oakland--community-driven and a bit unconventional. Overall, it's a decent spot with potential, but not somewhere I'd rush back to just for a movie.

While paying, I noticed an additional charge labeled as a "donation," rounding my total up to the nearest dollar. I was not asked if I wanted to donate or told what the donation was for. When I questioned why my total included an extra 53 cents, the cashier (Dana) responded with, "Oh, you don't want to? Huh? You don't want to donate?" in a very dismissive and uncomfortable tone. Let me be very clear: If a business is requesting donations, patrons should be asked first and informed where their money is going. You do not count people's money for them or assume they can or want to donate. That interaction felt rude, presumptive, and completely unprofessional. I am not opposed to donating -- I am opposed to being charged without consent and made to feel awkward for questioning it. The experience was a huge turnoff and took away from what was supposed to be a fun movie outing. Regal seriously needs to retrain staff on basic customer service and transparency.

I was surprised how clean everything was, from the bathroom, theater seatings & the whole theater. Maybe because there weren't a lot of people. We also selected the movie at 6pm on a Monday during a heavy storm. We were assigned to sit behind one person, but she was talking to herself. So we decided to move to the back of the theater. The single line for the concessions stand was quite long on a Saturday afternoon. There was another concessions stand upstairs leading to the second floor auditoriums, but it was closed. There was also an attached cafe offering a more extensive menu of food and drinks. The auditorium had recliner seats, but the back rests didn't recline much, mainly the foot rests were noticeable. There was just a single aisle in the room, but enough space between rows to not bump into seats while walking down the row. Temperature was perfect, sound and picture quality no problems, and parking options included a lot across the street (2-hour limit), a garage around the corner on Oak Street (75 cents per hour), and street parking in the area if you're lucky.

Look up at the ceiling, and around at the walls. Head up the curving staircase! Snap a photo of the marquee and the tall neon sign. The building is opulent! It's very close to BART, so it makes transportation to the venue a breeze. Avoid driving or you're likely to get your car broken into like I did when I came to a Yelp Elite Event nearby. :( Also, take note, they have a very strict no outside food or drinks policy. I had a very tiny purse, and I had a small package of crackers from Colombia my friend had just gifted me, and the staff took them off me! I also had a chomp stick and a package of roasted chestnuts. (I hadn't had dinner and was worried we wouldn't have time to eat before the show, so I packed a couple of tiny snacks in my bag). The door person was super nice and she said she'd hold them for me until after the show. Unfortunately, after the show, she went to get them from the locked ticket booth and someone took them! So a fellow staff member snatched my snacks. That's pretty messed up. I mean, I should have looked up the policy before I attended, but it's also pretty messed up that a staff member took my stuff after they were being held for me. The staff member said she had it with her own stuff; she was very surprised that they went missing as well. Other than the snack snafu, the seats were very comfortable and the pitch between the seats is generous! There was so much leg room! Plus, I didn't feel cramped at the shoulders. This is such a rarity for a theater and deserves mentioning! There are bathrooms both upstairs and downstairs. Overall, this is a great venue with a convenient BART accessible location! I'll be back.

From the lobby decor to the couches, everything about this theater shouts dedication and love. Truly you can see the effort dedicated to this project, and it's well-worth the drive up to Tiburon in order to experience this small corner-tucked movie theater. They also host events for community-building here, and I find that so exciting! (For example, they led a daddy-daughter workshop where they hosted breakfast and taught dads how to braid their kids' hair). My only qualm is that the food is a bit pricey, but overall the experience has been so cozy and inviting each time I'm there! Here are two of the preview videos that were run before the show: Preview #1: Rialto Cinemas promo featuring a clip of Sean Baker's Oscar speech in which he advocates for movie studios to continue producing and releasing films specifically for live cinema, because contemporary American society is heavily divided, and going to the movies in a theater alongside other people in one's community helps push back against that divide by bringing people together in a shared experience. Preview #2: Land acknowledgment showing the theater's own public affiliation to one hotly contested political extreme, making some audience members feel allied in tribal loyalty to the theater, while other audience members feel alienated and outraged before they even get to the main attraction.
