Ample backing up space, great steel picnic table and separate gas stove stand. Looks like the campground hosts (which I never saw) had thrown in a couple of logs. Really quiet campround and the bathroom was spotless, plenty of TP and even air fresheners hanging. I did not have a chance to hike around the surrounding area but this was a great campground. I did some astrophotography at night and there was no light pollution.

I've traversed that blacktop so many times and yet I missed the obvious: the sign for the Sand Island campground and petroglyphs. This campground is a great base for exploring the region and the adjacent boat launch area that hugs the San Juan River makes it even more pleasant. Of course, what lured me here is the large 300-foot long sandstone panel of petroglyphs that overlooks the campground. Thankfully protected by a fence, the images here are in very good condition with none of the bullet holes and routine vandalism that too often affects other sites. Over 1,000 images here date from 3000 BCE to AD 300 and are the result of many peoples: Ute, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Pueblo, and European ancestry, too. Some of the etched images no longer contrast well against the surface because desert varnish -- the dark mineral coating that coats stone over time -- has seeped into the crevices of the rock art. The nuanced surface simply attests to the age of these petroglyphs. Spend a night camping at Sand Island and you'll literally have a front row seat to ancient history.

There's a shared outside kitchen propane cook top. He sells eggs two for a dollar and beer in the fridge for two dollars each it's a honor system put it in the jar if you so desire, it's a nice touch I think. Our place was very clean sheets blankets, cleaned extra blankets, warm nice and comfortable. For the price you cannot beat it. Holy guacamole. Joe the owner was very nice. He has a few dogs. They're nice, but don't worry they don't stay at the camp. They go back up to the house with him. There are fire pits and a shared one that's huge next to the shared outdoor kitchen that a an amazing grill on it with lots of wood around and it's all free! Whoop,whoop! The views were absolutely breathtaking. We had a fire pit, a bbq grill, a stunning view of Lloyd's Lake, and we had deer in our yard at all hours of the day. It's close to ATV trails, and we found one, yes, one cute little place to eat in Monticello. Our 3.5 year old never even noticed there was no TV. It was so relaxing and serene. Some day, somehow, we will absolutely return here, and definitely to dome 7.

We were deciding on hotel vs Airbnb, we needed a one night rest to get up and continue driving. We opted for Airbnb and came across Dick's place which also had good reviews on Airbnb. We decided to take a chance and hoped he responded. Dick not only responded but he checked on us to make sure we had arrived safely as he knew we had a 5 hour drive from our last stop to his place. Upon arrival, the apartment was clean and free of any smells. There was kcups for coffee in the morning, as well as flavored cream. There were the essentials shampoo, towels, wash cloths, soap, knives, plates, cups, pretty must the necessities of any home. There was a binder that had some local tourism info as well as how far some highlights were from his place along with driving directions. There was ample parking and there were security cameras on the exterior of the property thus giving you piece of mind. Access to the keys was straight forward. It was an extremely nice experience. And lots of space, clean sheets, etc. We will definitely stay with Dick again if traveling back to or through the Utah area.

I reserved a vacation rental property through VRBO from this property owner. It was reserved…read moremonths in advance and fully paid for approximately a month in advance. Eight days before the reservation, I received a very one-sided "rental agreement" that includes extremely one-sided terms such as allowing the owner to enter the property at any time; allowing the owner to determine the amount of any damage to be deducted from security deposit; indemnity by me toward the owner if anyone is hurt on the property while I'm there (!!!!!); no liability for the owner if I am harmed by the condition of the property; agreeing to rules "posted" at the property that I have not yet seen; any dispute relating to the agreement has to be brought in this fairly remote section of Utah. I informed the property owner that the agreement is not acceptable and asked if I could still stay at the property without signing the agreement, or whether I could get a full refund. The owner would not agree to either. I believe this bait and switch amounts to consumer fraud -- either relying on guests who either don't read the agreement, OR hoping that people don't want to disrupt their vacation plans by disputing an unfair agreement presented in an unfair manner. Watch out for any vacation rentals in this area that are affiliated with Jerry Murdock, "Canyonlands Lodging," or "Canyonlands Lodging & Vacation Rentals."
