North Shore Lodge - No spindle in toilet paper holder

    North Shore Lodge

It is obvious that the owners, managers, and staff have either given up or don't care. The restaurant is no longer open, and with no continental breakfast offered, guests have no options. The cabins and rooms both leave you feeling dirty, and have less than the bare minimum. The pool has been closed for years, and the solution for the pool was to cover the windows with brown parcel paper. Out of sight out of mind, right? The hallway bathrooms are locked, with large spots of missing paint on them, and the hallway walls have numerous holes. There is a vending machine, but it has been unplugged, and pulled away from the wall. We opted to stay in the motel this time because the cabins were so disgusting and overpriced last time. In our room, #104, the majority of the problems, other than the dirty feel and having a very cold night because there wasn't a blanket on our bed, are in the bathroom. The shower has a large gouge in the wall, and a crack in the floor. The crack is probably due to a lack of support under the shower leaving a concave floor that collects water and sand. Furthermore, the part you pull to switch from bath to shower is stuck such that only half of the water comes out of the shower head. The maintenance guy couldn't fix it with pliers. And just to add insult to injury, they couldn't be bothered to replace the missing spindle for the toilet paper holder. All this wonderful luxury for merely a little over $100 per night. This place is a disgrace to the hospitality industry, and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Two of us tried it again many years later and discovered how truly dilapidated it had become. There is a You Tube video showing its current abandonment. It is a beautiful location so I hope someone reestablishes a resort there.

But if a quiet, clean, no-frills cottage retreat sounds like a good vacation base camp, you can do a lot worse than Woods. Michigan has a lot of small, older rental cabin resorts and these vary widely in the level of maintainence they receive. Woods stands up very well among these. The interior is spartan but clean and doesn't show a lot of obvious wear and tear. The bathroom was clean, though quite small. The hot water supply was a bit limited--after one of us showered, it took quite a while before there was enough for the other. There wasn't much counter space in the kitchen area, and the gas stove had basically two settings--full blast and slightly less than full blast. Not a great problem if all you need to do is heat something up, but if you need to simmer something for a while or pan fry anything, there's a high risk you'll scorch it. All that said, the inconveniences we encountered in the cabin certainly didn't put a damper on the trip. It was a satisfactory place to sleep, eat, and wash. And the view of Lake Superior out the window and direct access to the beach compensated for any shortcomings at Woods. There was a stairway directly behind our cabin leading down to a boardwalk over a marshy area between the cabins and the beach. It took about five minute to walk to the water, but the walk itself was pleasant. The beach is open to the public, but was far less crowded than the beaches right in Grand Marais. So, I'll give three stars for the cabin itself, five for the view and general setting, for a four-star overall rating.

That's the only semi-negative thing I will say about this place, The hotel is nice, the workers were nicer, the rooms were clean and the halls were quiet. The continental breakfast was pretty solid too. Bananas (finally! after 9 days in Michigan hotels, I was beginning to think there was a law against them) mini omelets, bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, turkey sausage and a pancake machine. The real star of this hotel is the back patio view. Sitting on their deck enjoying the views of Lake Superior while having a cold beverage is pretty amazing. The rooms with lake views have their own balconies or you can be a cheap ass like me and share the patio with the others.

The hot water was good. Water pressure was fine. The room's heat was welcome on the cold evening. Past the lobby the Inn has a nice seating area for breakfast. We found it to be a good spot to sit and eat food from town. The morning breakfast was busy both mornings. The staff did a good job keeping the coffee full and the food stocked. It was a nice money saver to not need to go out for breakfast in the morning. We opted for the cheaper room facing the parking lot. If I stayed here again, I would spring for a bay-side (Lakeview) room. We had a beautiful and bright sunrise over the bay. The staff was friendly.

The hotel was dog friendly, clean, comfortable, and well-kept. The free breakfast was better than expected and gave us a good start each morning. Our room faced South Bay of Lake Superior, which made for a beautiful view -- especially at sunset (though you'll need a little patience, since the sun doesn't set until after 10 PM in the summer!). The location was convenient with lots of great activities nearby, making it easy to explore the area without driving too far. Overall, this hotel added comfort and relaxation to an adventurous trip. Would definitely stay again when passing through!

The price was high for a room with a lake view but their season is not very long so I understand. The location is good just a mile into town and a short drive to the western sights of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. The room was decent nothing fancy except for the nice balcony looking out to the lake. Unfortunately the strong north wind and cold front limited our ability to sit outside except for a short bit. Welcome to Lake Superior at the very end of May! The breakfast room was super tiny for such a big place and on a Sunday morning it was cramped and hard to move around. Overall it worked for us.
