This review is actually for the park and the nearby pillbox trail. The park is clean and the trailhead is across the street of the restroom...you can't miss the opening. The trail is well kept, they have the much needed preventive erosion steps. These steps are great for the preservation of the trail as well as for those with "junk" shoes (lol). Sometimes the trail is a little muddy, with noticeable mosquitoes swarming around any uncovered/unprotected skin.
Overall, the trail is easy/novice. There is an incline but not too difficult. You can rest if you need a breather. I have done this trail several times, with friends and with just my children. My kids run up the hill and leave me behind. There is a picnic table (with a nice view of the north shore and Kaena point) to the left when you reach the peak of the hill. Then you make your way through a short stroll through the Iron wood forest. Soon, you make your way to the first pillbox. Most people stop here and enjoy the graffiti art and the view. Its a nice view and relaxing spot. You can proceed further into the trail---go down after the pillbox and keep going to you come to the next pillbox. You can continue but I don't recommend it if you are not properly prepared.
Come with a bottle of water, mosquito spray, shoes with descent traction, a camera and a bag for your rubbish to take out if you eat on this short trail. Take lots of photos, leave a very small to no footprint. Aloha and Enjoy. read more
