As my partner works in Takapuna, there's nothing I like better than making my way down to this little French inspired eatery early in the morning and grabbing some delicious noms to takeaway and head down to eat it on Takapuna Beach. I usually get the brioche crunch and end up with the icing sugar absolutely ALL over myself! It's pretty decadent but I tell myself it's fine, for a treat anyway! They have lots of offerings in the cabinet from filled rolls to little tartlets, and offer coffees and things as well. Make sure to grab some plain croissants on your way out, they are awesome as is, and I particularly like to fill them with lots of yummies myself for work lunches.

We ordered a cake for my daughter's 5th birthday the same day. Ordered at 8am, was supposed to be ready at 5pm. When I arrived they admitted they had completely forgotten about it! They charged half price and delivered to our house which was appreciated given the circumstances. Not ideal as we weren't able to enjoy the awesome look of cake for that long before doing the candles, cutting and getting to bed. The cake itself was awesome with chocolate ganache and piled high with berries on the top. Would go again as long as forgetting orders isn't a regular thing.

Like many of the independent bakeries in Auckland these days, the owners of Crusty are Cambodian. They are friendly, diligent and eager to give great service and delicious. Having visited Cambodia I always like having a chat to them about home. Although I'm not a big eater of breads and cakes etc. Supporting local businesses like Crusty is the perfect excuse to have the odd steak and cheese or butter chicken pie. Get amongst it!

A decade or so later; it was snapped up by a Norwegian pastry chef and so began the fusion of traditional European baking that continues to be a hallmark of the cakes and pastries that are served at Eve's pantry to this day. I love a good custard (vanilla) slice and Eve's pantry never fails to deliver. The pastry is always perfectly crisp and the rich, creamy custard in the center is simply decadent! Dare I say; heaven in a mouthful! They serve a decent coffee too. Eve's pantry offers a range of delicious pastries, gateaux and specialty cakes that some might consider a tad pricey until they have a slice - they really are worth every penny! The Henderson location offers plenty of variety and seating for lunch but the little Eve's Pantry in Takapuna is my favourite. Love sipping my coffee and tucking into my custard slice a midst the pretty mock cake structures and little racks of fancy ribbons! The comfy black armchairs and cozy seating arrangements make it a nice spot for a quick catch-up over coffee with a friend in a not-so-noisy cafe!

Being a local myself I have several wonderful food memories from this place. When I was growing up Dad and I used to stop in every Sat morning after netball to devour one (ok sometimes two) of their ham and cheese croissants and on weekdays I would often be late/disorganized just so that we would HAVE TO pick up one of their filled French sticks for school lunch. To this day, I love The Swiss Bakery and if it weren't for my 'real' job and slowing metabolism I'd be here every day of the week. Pop into The Swiss Bakery for afternoon tea and make sure you order a coffee - it comes with a wee heart shaped shortbread on the side...how sweet!

Bread & Butter are well-known for their authentic European-style breads and drool-worthy cabinet goodies but they also have a full breakfast and lunch menu. I went recently for lunch and was impressed with the diversity, from French toast to salad to fish tacos! I opted for their quinoa and haloumi salad and added chicken. It arrived prompty and was a generous serving. No skimping on the haloumi - BIG tick! As for the rest of the salad it was lovely and fresh but there wasn't much quinoa. I also wish they'd roasted the beetroot rather than boiled it but really, these are minor issues. The service was friendly and efficient, despite how busy they were. I am not in the habit of reviewing big coffee chains but I think this one deserves a mention. The first thing about it is that it's quiet serene and relaxed, compared to the madness of the foodcourt on a Saturday afternoon. You can have your coffee and browse at all the comings and goings in the mall downstairs. The coffee is excellent here and we always get the Caramelattes - a latte with a generous swirl of syrup on top (see pic). The food is fine too especially the pies - I get the chicken one which is not greasy and heavy like the ones you get in the bakehouses. When you are finished your coffee break you can browse in the bookstore downstairs. I used to just love their steak 'n' cheese pies of old, but thought I'd try one today for old times sake. All in all, it was a good pie. I don't like flaky pastry in a pie...I'm more of a short crust fan. It doesn't fall apart when being gobbled at speed nor does it make a huge mess while driving. The pie I got was piping hot. There was a couple of steak which had been seasoned well. The rest of the filling was gravy and melted cheese. Very tasty but could have don with more steak. I mean, I paid for a steak 'n' cheese, not gravy 'n' cheese. I bought an afghan because they looked scrumptious. Unfortunately, it was not as good as it looked. Lastly, I happened to buy a banana and caramel tart. I'm more of a custard pie fan. This was no tart, it was too big. Plus it had no hallmarks of a tart. What it was though, was a banoffee pie. A miniature one. If you love banoffee, then this is the treat for you. Hell, I don't even like banoffee pie. I love this one from the Westside Bakehouse.
