Why a 2001? well, they don't make that body style after 2001, and I've always wanted one. I live in Massachusetts and pretty much looked all over the East Coast. Then I saw the ad on harrisburg craigslist for a little car dealer named Final Drive Auto Sales in Shippensburg PA and they had a beautiful, clean, fully loaded 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4 in Forest Green. It had 142,000 miles on it, was a 1 owner car with no accidents, so I made a call to ask for some details, called again a few days later and talked about the cars maintenance history, recent work they knew was done such as the new brakes, and we talked some numbers. It didn't take me long to decide that I needed to hop on an Amtrak from MA to PA and I had no qualms about driving that Jeep back home 350 miles. I arrived at their lot and was surprised to see so many cars for sale, I figured it was just a corner lot with 5 to 10 cars, but they had many more. There was a building with an unassuming front office, and across the parking lot another building which housed a garage where the staff technicians were working on washing cars and getting them ready for sale. I took the Jeep out for a test drive, checked all the things I knew enough to check and was happy with the truck. We worked out a price, and signed the papers on the spot. The place was pretty busy, I think they actually sold 2 other cars at the same time I was filling out my paperwork. Since I was from out of town I asked them for help with getting PA temp tags and they were very helpful in getting me to the local DOT agent office in what I would call downtown Shippensburg. Nice little town you folks got there! I got the Jeep home, got MA plates on it, took it to state inspection, it passed with no issues, and I couldn't be happier. They even write a nice little thank you note to each customer on their Facebook wall, very nice touch! Thanks guys!

Back in October, I purchased a car at a dealership that came highly recommended. My daughter is friends with the owner's son, and I have a mutual friend with the owner. The initial experience was excellent--I received reassuring messages like "let me know if you need anything" and "call me if you don't think you're getting a good deal." BUT... I drove off the lot in my cute little whip and IMMEDIATELY noticed my gas gauge fluctuating between empty and full. I texted my sales guy right away--I mean, I had JUST pulled off the lot. I stayed in communication over the next several weeks. Around Thanksgiving, I took my car to their recommended shop, which confirmed my fuel pump needed replaced. I double-checked that the dealership would handle the bill, and they ordered the part. December: I'm back in town for Christmas. Wrong fuel pump was sent. January: Trip canceled due to PA winter weather. February: Finally back. Fuel pump replaced, but surprise--I'm told I owe $288 for a "deductible and taxes" I never anticipated. I called my sales guy. No answer. I called the dealership and got Chad, the owner. And this is where it goes downhill fast. I have no idea if someone pissed in his Cheerios that morning or if this is standard behavior. And I rarely play this card, but I genuinely believe had I not been a woman, this conversation would have gone differently. I wish I could accurately convey the condescending tone of this man's voice. He was rude, talked down to me, and was inexplicably angry. Chad claims: "If it was the fuel pump, you wouldn't have been able to drive it off the lot." Reality: This was precisely the diagnosed problem according to THE SHOP HE SENT ME TO. Then he goes: "I don't know what you people expect. It's only a hundred dollars. Some people are never happy." Then he HUNG UP ON ME. Like a child who can't regulate his emotions. My not-so-happy self drove straight to Final Drive to address this in person. Guess who wasn't there? Chad. Guess who was? Justin, who spent the next ten minutes trying to manipulate the conversation by listing everything he'd done for me--fixing the backup camera, calling the warranty company repeatedly. I asked Justin directly: "If we'd noticed the gas gauge wasn't working before I drove off the lot, would you have fixed it?" "Yes," he admitted. "According to Chad, it's 'only $100'--bottom line, are you going to cover that?" "No." LESSONS LEARNED 1. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING. I should have texted Justin to document his response that there would be no out-of-pocket costs. 2. ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT COSTS. Even when someone says they'll "handle it," clarify exactly what that means and what potential costs might still fall to you. 3. DEALERSHIP OWNERS AREN'T ALWAYS ACCOUNTABLE. Chad had an opportunity to listen and communicate effectively. Instead, he chose disrespect. Kindness goes a long way in business, but some people only care about the initial sale. Don't let this happen to you. Document everything, ask detailed questions about costs, and research dealership reviews thoroughly--especially regarding their after-sale service. Not that I did any of those things prior to my purchase. I assumed that my second degree of separation through friends who had personally communicated to the owner and his son would have sufficed. I live in NJ, so driving three hours to see the car was a big commitment. Before going, I noticed in the photos that the front bumper had a lot of scrapes and scratches. Mike assured me in writing that the bumper would be sanded and repainted. When I got there, the car itself was great -- but the bumper clearly wasn't redone. It looked like they just spot‑painted a few areas and you could see the paint drip marks from how poorly the job was done. When I tried to bring this up, Mike was incredibly dismissive. He wouldn't even sit down with me, spoke down to me while I was seated, and gave me maybe four minutes of his time. Meanwhile, he had all the time in the world for the older couple sitting at the table next to me and even went outside to go look at a vehicle with them. Any time I tried to explain my reasoning or talk about the condition of the car, he cut me off and dismissed it as "this is what it is". After driving three hours, being treated like I was an inconvenience instead of a customer was honestly shocking. Buying a car should be exciting, not something that makes you feel small. I ended up buying a 2024 GTI in Ohio instead. It was more expensive, but the experience there was night and day. They treated me like a human being, and that alone made it worth the extra cost. Sutliff Volkswagen didn't lose my business over price -- they lost it over how they chose to treat me.

In my experience, I was wrong. The first thing the woman said to me when I introduced myself and what I was there for was, "Do you have your registration... do you know what that looks like." My vehicle had fairly new breaks on but they told me it needed new breaks, calibers, rotors, and tires. The total (not including the inspection) was around $2000. Fortunately, I know enough about cars and knew that none of which they said I needed was actually needed because I keep good care of my vehicle. I have family friends that own garages back where I am from and had them look at at my car and they said that everything was in good condition and that D&L was over charging for all the parts and that they were definitely trying to pull one over on me and felt like it was because I was a woman (which is not uncommon, unfortunately). My car passed inspection at another garage where they told me that D&L put the lug nuts on too tight and that it stripped them, causing me to need new lug nuts. I went back to D&L because I wanted to address my concerns and hoped that we could have a conversation about the experience. I was mistaken. The woman at the front desk was rude when I asked if I could speak to the owner and when she finally "allowed" me to, the owner told me that based on the notes, the car should have passed inspection. He then went to talk to one of his mechanics and then came back and changed his story. He also went out and looked at my car without my permission and accused me of changing items on my vehicle. This place is a joke, manipulative, unprofessional, and I cannot warn everyone (especially women) enough to stay away. I will no longer be getting gas there and will most definitely not have inspections or work done on my car there going forward.
