We had not eaten lunch here for many years. Today the restaurant was full and busy. From the time we sat down, ordered and received our food was 30 minutes. We both ordered a hot hamburger with fries and coleslaw. Disappointment was the order of the day. A very small patty on a single slice of bread smothered in a very dark, very salty gravy. It tasted ok with the exception of the gravy. It was a tablespoon of Coleslaw. I had a Strawberry Milkshake as they only have fountain pop. The shake was good. I doubt that we wii venture back again for lunch. read more

We've visited Sunnyside twice for brunch, and have yet to be disappointed. Both times I ordered the breakfast skillet, which is essentially a layer of home fries, topped with veggies and/or meat, scrambled eggs, and tons of cheese (with a side of toast)! I get a side of hollandaise, since I pretty much do that any time I'm eating potatoes for breakfast (saucy hollandaisey potatoes - YUM). The portion is large, and it's pretty darn tasty! Sunnyside Restaurant is known among the locals and is a full house on the weekends. We use to go to have pancakes, which always filled the gullet. I remember going here for ice-cream in the summer. They have a huge selection of flavors and always good on a hot summer day. read more

This family style restaurant is obviously a favorite with locals, given all the "hi, how are you doing?" I heard while waiting for my order. The place is huge, the staff friendly, efficient and quick to give you coffee before you even order. Before I even mention food though, I thought it wonderful that for the week of Jan 25-31, for every meal ordered, the restaurant is contributing $1 for Haitian relief. How cool is that! Breakfast choices were many - and pretty standard - eggs, pancakes, different combinations. I ordered the special for $5.99 2 eggs any style (I like mine poached), bacon or sausages and 2 huge pancakes. I was expecting toast (to soak up my yolks) but , hey... I have no idea what the difference is between the Sunnyside Restaurant and the attached Sunnyside Too, other than the fact that the decor is a bit different. I think it's a common kitchen/menu. I ate at the Too side once a year or two ago, but just tried the regular Sunnyside for breakfast on an overcast Sunday in July most recently. It was pretty busy and I had a couple of minutes' wait to get a table, which ended up being the booth closest to the door. Friendly service but a little slow. I ordered the Mexican Omelette ($13. "Three eggs jammed full of fresh tomato, chicken, onions, salsas, mozzarella and cheddar.") The salsa actually came on the side with sour cream. They, being cold, made the omelette turn cold when poured on, but it was still very tasty. I've never had one with chicken before and liked it a fair bit. Home fries (frozen, standard) on the side were late arriving but made up for it in quantity, a big dish that I couldn't finish. Coffee topped up frequently. I definitely would come back here anytime, although it's nothing exciting, it's your basic family restaurant with no complaints. 2nd visit: 7am on an overcast Sunday in Aug 2018. Myself and one other customer were the only ones there for the half hour that I was there. I tried the country skillet off the seniors' menu this time (which anyone can order from), thinking I'd get a significantly smaller portion size than their regular. My family and I visited this breakfast place about 2 weeks ago. The food is great and the service is even better. The new owner (Angel) is amazing. She is kind and always has a smile on her face. A classic family diner. Truth be told: I think I've only been here one time that wasn't for breakfast/brunch. But for the many times I've been here for breakfast/brunch, this place gets a hearty "thumbs up!" Let's start with what is usually the most important: service. I know, I know, you might think food is the most important aspect of a restaurant. Well, you'd be wrong. Staff are friendly and a wee bit "folksy." They aren't tripping over themselves to please you but seem genuinely concerned that you're having a pleasant experience. Coffee (for those who enjoy it) is flowing and so are the smiles. Food is dished up pretty quickly. Which I appreciate! Now: food. This is a diner. In almost every sense of the word. Lots and lots of wonderfully unhealthy dishes for breakfast. Lots of great set menu items but they don't mind making some substitutions or helping you combine sides to make your own dish. Maybe could stand to have some more veg-tastic dishes but it's an old-school kinda place, so I understand the meat emphasis. Next: atmosphere. This ain't nothin' fancy. It does the job and provides you a place to eat. And lots of people do! You can expect a wide range of customers; from little old ladies to large families, to hungover university types to sports teams. I've been there once and I would like to try is again. First time I was there I was really excited they had a seafood chowder I ordered right away. It was really busy for the lunch time rush, but our food got to is in good time. The bad thing was the chowder. It looked gross and smelled worse. It tasted like they had put cheese in it to melt, which is ok, it's just not something I could handle. I asked the waitress about it and she wasn't sure what was in it, but took it back for me no problem. Sunnyside is the place to go when you're looking for a good meal at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is kind of dull and boring, but super clean so I can't complain. Service is hit or miss, I've once waited 15 minutes just for my bill so that wasn't impressive, but they're usually quite quick. Now to the most important part, the food. I chose a clubhouse and splurged on poutine for my side. Both were delicious, but nothing special. the poutine had just the right amount of gravy so it wasn't too soggy but it also wasn't lacking, and the clubhouse was the same as you would get anywhere. I personally like it when places take a bit of creative license on basic diner fare but for a basic diner I didn't expect anything special. This place is convenient, cheap, and easy. This has always been at the top of our list when it comes to breakfast and they do a good breakfast. Lots of options, fast and keep the coffee cup full. This weekend we went for dinner (first time ever) to celebrate my Grandmothers 95th birthday. Service was great and no errors on the bills... And she had 6 between all of us. Dinner food is good, nothing amazing but exactly what you would expect. I had the smoked meat sandwich, good but the meat was cold and I expected it would have been warm. This USED to be mine and my husbands favorite restaurant until they started cheaping out on the eggs and most of their food comes from Sysco rather than being homemade. My husband always got the scrambled eggs and sausage, and the last time we went there he noticed the eggs tasted funny and the sausages did also. We asked the server if they changed their eggs and sausage and she said yes, the sausages were a different brand and the scrambled eggs are made from eggs in a carton and if you wanted real eggs you would have to specify. Ummmm I would have to specify if I wanted real eggs? I thought that would be a given. Also, they used to get local, homemade rolls from a nearby bakery which they don't anymore and get them from Sysco. It's all very disappointing because it's hard to find places now that actually have homemade items! We haven't gone back since this happened. read more

Have been to the Sunnyside restaurant a couple times over the last 2 years and enjoyed both the food and service. This time I was disappointed in both and we won't be returning for awhile. We walked in and were asked whether we preferred a table or booth, we asked for a booth. The lady up front then took us to a table instead and said "well we don't have any." While we were looking at the menus 3 different waitresses asked us rudely "what do you want" in the span of about 10 minutes. After placing our order my fiances meal(Sausage penne) was served to him cold. I ordered shrimp and scallop pasta in a mustard sauce. I was dissapointed that for $16.99 there was only 3 scallops and 1 shrimp. I complained to the waitress and was told "well you get what you pay for." Don't bother going during the week day to the Sunnyside Too Restaurant. We were placed by an open door where men were working on replacing some booths. Never did see the waitress. Finally we got up to leave. Nobody bothered to stop us on the way out. The girl at the cash looked at us then went back to checking out her fingernails...its not as if they were busy. Meh. The only thing high-end about this place are the prices. The service is pretty friendly but just what you'd get in a truck stop. The breakfast here is decent. But for 11 or 12 bucks a plate I want more. (And coffee is extra.) Sure, the days of a great $5 breakfast may be gone, but if I'm going to spend $70 to take my family to breakfast, I want it to be REALLY good. This feels very ordinary (and boring). It's the best all-round restaurant. Great breakfast, lunch and supper menus. Plenty of selection. We've been there over a dozen times in the past year and have have always left with full bellies and satisfied. The prices are on par with other restaurants. The portion sizes are fantastic for the price. The fiance and i come here almost every weekend. This weekend we noticed it was severely understaffed. They had one poor girl who was the hostess, working extra hard on her own, cleaning tables and rushing to get everyone seated . The short haired older supervisor kept barking out orders and not doing a damn thing to help get the tables cleared. I could feel the tension and the poor managment skills were obvious as well as dissapointing.I do not like to witness people being treated poorly by management. I was really disappointed tonight. I ordered the Seafood Platter and it came with unseasoned, frozen vegetables that were so over-steamed they leaked nearly a quarter inch of water across the plate. The seafood was sitting in cold water, and I made do with the side salad that was on a different plate. I did mention it quietly at the register as we were leaving (did not ask for a refund, paid the full bill) and the only response given was 'oh, ok' Won't be returning. read more

We have been regulars since 2009 We enjoyed the combos and the food was great. Recently the combos were dropped and the price went up. We still continued to like this resteraunt. In the past month we had burnt fish.twice. The first time we didn't pay for it but the second time ( last evening) we were there with our boys and their spouses . Five of us had the fish and once againg it was burnt. My husband and daughter in law had the French Onion soup which is usually quite good. Not this time. After us telling the kids how good the food is there ; it turned out quit the opposite The veg were cold also. I was the only one who had a good meal of soup and salad except the last time I had that it : it came with garlic bread. My family went into this resturant last summer and had a terrible experience. Our server decided that she wanted to talk to her friends that were eating there instead of checking up on us, she decided to voice her opinon of her job and the customers that she waits on. We had to wait another 20 minutes to get our cheque, we were not offered dessert, the cheques was slammed on the table and she walked away. Didn't ask how our meal was, if we needed drink refills or anything. When I called to complain about it because the manager wasn't there at the time, I left 3 messages and took him over 3 weeks to get back to me. His response, well maybe she was busy. She was sitting down complaining about your customers... I wasn't looking for a free meal but some training to be done. I will never go back and I have told several friends about this experience and they have went to the Diner down the road - much better service. read more
