I'm a sucker for donuts and after seeing that some of the best new donuts in Charlotte are only available as a Saturday morning pop up, I did a quick search for something closer to where we were staying in Blacksburg. Sunny's was not only close, but the reviews sounded good and the photos looked even better. I prefer traditional donuts over those newfangled fancy kinds and boy did the images of chocolate old fashions and glazed buttermilk bars peak my interest. After Justin and I decided to make the drive, timing it so we would arrive in their last hour of operation to pick up treats for dessert, I started making a my-eyes-are-bigger-than-my-stomach list of what I would select. Sunny's Facebook page has even more photos and info on it and often includes the special donut of the day. I think I was salivating as we drove. When we arrived we were both a little surprised to see that Sunny's Donuts is inside Sunny's Quik Stop gas station. However, we've driven to Maryland for gas station tacos and have been know to frequent a particular gas station for sandwiches in the District, so for us donut lovers this was hardly a deterrent. What was, however, was seeing a gentleman (Sunny himself!) outside locking up the door. I don't know if the car had stopped moving before I jumped out and sprinted to the door. Luckily, we could still enter though the minimart door and once at the counter, Sunny's wife Lang showed us the two boxes of donuts that remained. Note: despite the name, Sunny and Lang's son Andrew is actually in charge of the donut portion of this operation. The Gaffney Ledger wrote up a nice story about the family and the business a couple of years ago. Much to my dismay, there weren't too many options left. No blueberry cake donuts, no buttermilk bars and no daily special. We scored two maple crumb, a raised chocolate bar, a raised glazed, and after chatting up Lang and deliberating about what to get to round out our half dozen, we finally picked a couple more and ordered a few donut holes. Lang was so sweet and threw in a couple extra donut holes for good measure and rewarded our donut enthusiasm with a couple of extra donuts, saying the plain cake would go well with coffee in the morning before our long trip back to DC. In total we paid just $6 - the price of two bougie donuts where we live! The donuts themselves were pretty good but the raised offerings would have faired much better earlier in the day. The maple crumb was by far my favorite of the group and is definitely worth a return visit the next time we're visiting family in the area. Lessons learned: - the hours are somewhat subjective, get there well before closing to ensure any donuts are available - donuts are only made in the morning so the earlier you can get there the fresher they'll be and the more choices you'll have - Sunny's is like a sunny little piece of California in South Carolina - homemade and home operated donuts - kill two birds with one stone and grab a donut while you pump your gas read more

They make all of their items from scratch daily, so if you want their most sought after treats you better make sure to get them before they sell out! The Fritters - Apple or Peach, Bear Claws, Buttermilk Bars, Blueberry Cake Donuts - you name it, it's all AMAZING! The Apple Fritters are my favorite and are so crispy on the outside but moist and flavorful on the inside. After hearing positive reviews from co-workers, came this morning to give them a try. I'm extremely impressed. There aren't a lot of crazy, exotic flavors. My son loved the maple bar. I loved the peach fritter, and my wife, who isn't a fritter person, thought it was very good. She likes the cake donuts, and they were outstanding. I liked the maple bacon donut, spot on for flavor. We heard about Sunny's from a friend. He showed me a picture of a Tiger Claw (a bear claw for the upstate of SC) that was bigger than his fist. My wife and I went this morning and we were not disappointed. We got a basic yeast leavened glazed donut, a buttermilk bar, and the tiger claw. The glazed donut was so tender - just delicious. The buttermilk bar had this perfect center and it was so perfect with the coffee. The tiger claw was sweet, cinnamon-y, and huge! We loved everything so much we got a half dozen to go to share with our friends. All those donuts and coffee cost just about $12. Crazy! We will have to go back because we want to try everything. I was at the park with a friend and our children one day when her mom dropped off a bag of Sunny's Donut Holes... oh my goodness!!! They were so yummy! I told my husband about them and we went soon after. My favorite is the Cinnamon Roll or Twist- I've tried others that are delicious but just keep going back to that. They are HUGE! You definitely get your money's worth! My husband's favorite are the Apple Fritters- he loves it when I surprise him with one at lunch or after work. My children love them all. In fact, my daughter's 7th birthday is tomorrow and we told her that Daddy would take her either to breakfast or lunch- her choice. She said, "Can we go to Sunny's Donuts?" (I'm kind of jealous he gets to take her... here's hoping he brings home some extras!) The owners of Sunny's are precious people who seem truly happy to be at work and have customers- not something you see everywhere you go these days.
