I came to this area looking for a cigar shop that turned out to have closed six months ago, but I'm glad it did -- it led me straight to Sunny's Bar. Matt was behind the bar and mentioned that he sells cigars. He helped me pick out a smooth Monte Cristo and made me feel right at home with great conversation. The place has a friendly, easygoing vibe and a solid group of regulars. Service is excellent and everyone seemed genuinely welcoming. I just discovered Sunny's this year and it has quickly become one of my favorite watering holes in downtown. We typically meet at a friend's house in EaDo and catch the rail into downtown. Sunny's is just a short walk from the rail. It is located off Capitol and the neon sign outside is hard to miss. They have a small patio outside and on more than one occasion I have run into friends sitting outside during the nice weather days. Walking in, it looks like a little tropical bar the way it is decorated. There's just a little bit of seating up front, but there is a whole back area with pool tables and stools in the back. To get to the bathroom, there's a little maze of a hallway to follow. Customer service has always been great here. You can tell they have their regulars, but the bartenders always make everyone feel welcome. As far as drinks go, they got it all. In a little hole in the wall like this you expect mostly beer and liquor, but they also seem to cater to the wine lovers as well. I always end up getting a beer specifically to get one of their cool koozies that says "Stolen from Sunny's" that you are more than welcome to keep. I've also partook in their frozen bomb pop concoction that is a mix of all their frozens. It is quite refreshing on a summer day. On top of that, they have lots of drink specials. What they are known for is their $1 Jell-O shots that people buy in mass quantities. I love this place because of the no frills, cheap, chill atmosphere that I seem to love these days. A cool hole in the wall vibe! Everybody is welcomed and you get all types. They don't have food but they do have popcorn which was perfect with a few drinks. The bartender was great, I hate that I don't remember her name. She made me feel so comfortable because my husband made friends at the bar to talk sports with and I don't do sports . It's a hole in the wall typa bar but let me tell you it's our first time visiting Houston and it was our first night in downtown. The service was excellent it was a male and a female working that day, it was on 11/9 Friday to be exact. Drinks were on point and $1 Jell-O shots what more could you ask for. We were recommended a place for some birria tacos then had to come back honestly the vibe with the bartenders was great! Felt like I knew them or I was a regular, they know how to treat customer . I would be careful that you aren't being charged for other people's drinks. Ok, , so, I admit that I don't have the best hearing in a quiet environment, much less a loud one!! I try to be patient and understanding, but don't mess with my $$$. My friend and I had bought some Drinks then split a bucket, which I sent him money on Venmo for and I bought some $1 shots. Well, when I got my bill, it was higher than I expected, so I asked for an itemized receipt and the bartender immediately became defensive about it! Luckily, the manager was there. She was well aware of the shots, But not anything more. The male bartender was yelling at me and arguing that I was wrong. I was NOT in a state where I didn't know what I was talking about and I was grateful that the manager was working with me to clear it up, other wise I would have paid for drinks that weren't mine. She did tell me that someone had charged drinks to my tab-some that may have been in my group, but others who definitely weren't. My advice is to be careful and check your tabs here! read more

My friends and I were dropped off by our Uber in the for a goo middle of nowhere. He said this is the area to be. Walking around we ran into a dude and asked him where should we go? He said Sunny's. And we asked and for cheap drinks? He said Sunnys! So we walked across the street and into the bar. There was a mix of people of all ages and ethnicities. It had a local bar vibe with locals and seems like everyone knew everyone there. The bartender was really nice and made us a really strong Texas tequila drink. We went to many more bars after that and nobody made theirs as strong as Sunny's. At the end of the night my friends and I came back to Sunny's and the guy who we randomly talked to at the beginning of the night was there too! Kind of a cool dive. It's was super busy and had someone outside grilling, who also had a monkey. So weird and awesome.
