Sprout Community Garden

Sprout Community Garden is a project of Mind Australia, who run it to help people with mental…read morehealth problems. It's located next to Thornbury train station, and consists of a sprawling garden of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and community space. Each Thursday from 1-4pm their produce/plant stand is open, and once a month (first Thursday, 3-7pm) they run a community market which, in addition to their usual fruit and veg and plants, included preserves, crafts, baked goods, more gardening things, worm farm stuff (farms, worm juice), an organic sausage sizzle, and more. I went this afternoon and found it pretty busy, with lots of kids doing activities, people playing music, and numerous stalls. I bought some organic vegies, some brick-oven-baked sourdough from a new co-operative bakery that's starting up, a sorrel plant for my garden, and a necklace. You don't go to a market like this for its prices, but despite that, I thought the prices were pretty reasonable, especially for the quality of the food I got. The only negatives I would mention are that a lot of the plants/seedlings for sale from the Sprout stand don't seem to be all that healthy, and many of them aren't well labelled. I bought my sorrel from a different organic garden stand, where the seedlings seemed much nicer. Apart from that, I just wish the garden was open all day every day for people to go hang out in and/or get their hands dirty. (As it is, you have to go through a complicated volunteer signup process to help them out. Understandable, given that you'll be working with kids and disabled people.) In any case, I'm going to try and make it back regularly on Thursdays from now on.

According to the shop owner, The Manufactory is fast becoming known as the "the shop with the…read morerusted front door". It's a pretty awesome front door too, reminiscent of a decaying submarine or some other war paraphernalia. However, it does throw people a bit, so the key thing is to just push. The handles are mere decoration. The shop sources vintage household and other items from across Australia and some places overseas, and only stock things above a certain quality. They clearly have a sense of humour too, with displays like a bell jar containing an old copy of the book 'The Bell Jar' by Silvia Plath. There's certainly enough jars dotted about the place for someone to come and open up a Sovereign Hill style old time-y lolly shop, or perhaps an apothecary. There's a general steampunk and industrial theme to the establishment, with old pieces of machinery and random goods most people wouldn't think to try and hunt down. Everyone who walks into the place seems to light up and there's a general sense of cheer in the air. It's not cheap, but the effort put into gathering the goods makes it worth it. All in all, it's a genuine treasure trove.

I learnt a new word today. "Steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history,…read moreand speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s." The Manufactory is one kooky little space, as well as offering 'Steampunk' there is a range of 'Kitchenalia', 'Botanica' and 'Illuminations'. This essentially means vintage industrial goods of a more romantic or feminine nature. Its not the large stark industria that can also be classified as a dangerous weapon. The shop is fronted with a vault like door that appears to be salvaged from the Titanic, opening to a quaint assortment of goods all lovingly displayed amongst medicine chests, antique dressers and shadow boxes. The space is clean and bright and allows shoppers to visualise how recycled pieces can be utilised within their own living spaces. prices are on the higher end of the vintage spectrum, so average with other vintage/industria traders.
