I had a very disappointing experience at Suncoast Dentistry. From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff was rude, unwelcoming, and never even greeted me. Instead of answering my questions, she immediately assumed I didn't have insurance, even though I came fully prepared with my insurance card and all the necessary information. As someone who is already nervous about going to the dentist, this made the experience even more uncomfortable. Customer service goes a long way, and unfortunately, I didn't experience that here. I heard wonderful things about Dr. Vu - friends from church recommended him. Sadly, the receptionist was borderline rude and difficult to work with. I used to be a big fan of this office, especially Dr. Vu. However, Darren systems are not taking an HMO insurance plan has really soured me on them. When I went to renew my dental insurance online, I made sure specifically the plan I took would include this office, which the insurance company says it did. There will be a separate post about them. But, we get to the office today and nobody verifies anything until after the fact. So, I'm now $174 for a regular cleaning. Can't say how incompetent I feel the front office staff is here. I was a long-term patient at this clinic until today. I had an appt. scheduled, but when I arrived I wass not allowed to see the doctor because the did not accept my insurance (which did not cover dental ). This was because They would be "out of network", even though this would not be a problem. BTW...I was told they did take my insurance ahead of time. Great first visit to Suncoast Dentistry. My appointment was made only a few weeks out. Everything was on time. Covid procedures were clearly evident. All xrays were quick and digital. Dentist said teeth were okay but then they proceeded to up sell me on a deep cleaning and refused to do a standard cleaning. Ironically they did the same to my wife but when she pushed back they did the cleaning for her. I guess I got the hygienist that was behind on her sales quota! read more

I have been working in healthcare for 33 years. I can say this is one of the worst places to experience fear selling and up selling services. I have very good teeth, as they have told me on each and every visit, my entire life. BUT, at Suncoast Dentistry I always need something else. Many times before the doctor even enters the room. This is not some rogue hygienist selling additional services, since they all have tried to create a fear as to my pending dental issues. In this last event color was placed on my teeth and I was told to have deep plaque under my gums, and that I would be in pain very soon if I did not get this taken care of. The last deep cleaning I needed (they said one and a half years ago) I would need antibiotics to be inserted into my gums. The antibiotics needed to be ordered. Ordered and they inserted 25% into my gums and told me they would hold the remaining 75% for me. They did the same with my wife. Today they could not remember the story so at first "no, we sent those back to the manufacturer" Then a few minutes later, "no those had expired so we threw them away". When I pushed the issue again the hygienist, " so do you have the antibiotics"!! In my opinion, you sold them to someone else. Since you don't know if you sent them back or you threw them away. Healthcare is hard enough. To have this blatant dishonesty is unacceptable. And while I am sure a few people have had good experiences, I can not extend any alcaldes to a "professional" medical practice that directs their staff in this manner. You have a oath and it states nothing about money in that oath. read more

I have been going to Suncoast Denistry for years. Dr. Vu is very comforting and everyone in the office is so very nice. My sons wife is so afraid of dentists that she puts off work.....but I told her about Dr Vu and she did great. This was quite a few years ago for they live in Texas now, but Dr Vu was gentle and put her at ease. I've had great cleanings, and have had fillings and a couple crowns when I broke the tooth. Called today (09/11) as we recently moved to the area. We just had cleaning in May where we moved from. Asked when we could schedule appointment for cleanings, as would be due in November. Was told could not have appointment until January or February if all 3 of us wanted to come in at same time! That is 4-5 months away from now. read more

I've had great experiences starting with ease of making an appointment for regular cleanings, but more importantly, when I needed a quick unscheduled appointment for a sensitive tooth. The front office staff is friendly and eager to assist. The back office staff, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygentist, and Dr. Vu are easy to talk to, answer questions and make sure you feel comfortable. Hello everyone, I am a local Registered Dental Hygienist with 10 years of experience and after reading Rick's concerns I decided he had some very valid questions. For a person to have proper dental health it is MANDATORY to be educated and as a Hygienist this is my job that I take personally and I live whole-heartedly by my code of ethics. So, I'd like to take a moment and address some questions that might arise from reading this online blast. I am a huge advocate of second opinions but only from credible sources like a Periodontist, a Dental School or a credited Hygiene School; not a dentist that will tell you "what you want to hear." That is called denial and with any diagnosis of disease we all go through it. The FL Department of Health has the laws and regulations for Dental and Medical Practices http://www.floridahealth.gov/. First of all, I'd like to address the "color" as being called GUM Red-Cote Liquid or a 2-Tone disclosing solution. These products are used as a tool for patient education. Once the agent is applied and rinsed it allows the hygienist and patient see areas in the mouth that have plaque and bacteria present since these are generally areas that are involved in the periodontal disease process; YouTube has a few videos of how it works. The link here discusses the relationship with this plaque and bacteria although there are hundreds: http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/oralhealth/Topics/GumDiseases/PeriodontalGumDisease.htm. To see "deep plaque" or calculus you must have radiographs or "x-rays" to show the root surfaces and if calculus shows up on those than it must be a large amount and dense since x-rays are meant to show bones not soft tissues. I don't know about you but having bacteria colonize under your gums causing infection and bone loss in your mouth doesn't sound healthy. I just imagine subterranean termites; slow and steady but destructive. In all of my years I've never been told by any patient that this process is "painful" unless a periodontal abscess develops or a tooth is so loose then it hurts to chew on it. Our bodies are fantastic, if you have heart disease it "doesn't hurt" either. Secondly, the antibiotics generally used are called Arestin and like any locally applied antibiotic it is used to treat active infection and is placed in as many areas as infections is present. First, the area has to be cleaned 110% and all plaque, bacteria and calculus removed or you will NOT see any improvement. Arestin website is http://www.arestin.com/ and their patient education area is great, so check them out. As far as Richards concerns about having them ordered a year and a half ago, I am glad they were not placed since they have a shelf-life of about ONE year and like all expired antibiotics they should be properly disposed of. For anyone wondering how to properly to dispose of expired medications please go to the Food and Drug website at: http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm101653.htm. As for Arestin, over the years their protocol has changed and is different from office to office. Previous protocol was to return expired cartridges to the manufacturer but in recent years, the dental office is permitted to properly dispose of them. Some dental offices allow the patient to take the cartridges home but personally I will not take responsibility and place any medication that a patient brings in since they are very fragile to light, heat, moisture and so on as described in this website http://www.valeant.com/Portals/25/Pdf/PI/arestin-pi.pdf. If you would like to know your type of bacteria or think your bacteria is aggressive Sarasota Periodontal Assoc. does a Bacterial Assessment where they take a sample and send it to a lab for identification and specialized therapies are recommended to treat the specific type of bacteria. I hope this letter has helped clear up any concerns anyone might have and I apologize that some of you have had poor dental experiences but I thank you for your continued care and your partnership toward your dental health.
