In my own twisted mind, this building is forever known as the "condom building." It's sort of rounded and topped with a little green copper hat that includes a small pocket-like appendage at the very top. With that out the way, this is also one of the oldest buildings in the city, and if you can believe it, at the time it was built, in 1912, it was the tallest building in the British Empire. Men are so obsessed with size, aren't they?
It was built by LD Taylor for his newspaper, "The World," the forerunner to today's favourite birdcage liner, the Vancouver Sun. And according to L.D.'s bio, it ended up ruining him as he lost control of the paper, and the real estate. Eventually, the publishers of the Sun bought it back, and they renamed it the Sun Tower.
Today, the building is an office building, home to an eclectic array of small businesses, non-profit organizations, and professionals. If you ever have business there, they have a herky-jerky little elevator and couches at the end of the hallways where you can wait for your party. Just don't bring up the condom thing. read more
