Called in advance for a wedding coming up in a couple weeks I was given lots of good advice. The nice blonde woman who helped me on the phone was there when I arrived. She even remembered me. Being mindful of my budget I ended up getting tour of the city. Started with the fast bed and excited to use the instant bed in a few days! One thing that stood out to me was how personable and kind she was. we talked on how to get my dress on without the tan rubbing off. Not as concerned now. I'm a 47 year old female......after reading the reviews, I did hesitate on wanting to try Sun Tan City in Lawrence. HOWEVER.......I did go in to tan. I had an AMAZING experience!!! No extra charges. I decide to give Sun Tan City a try since Ultimate Tan's spray booth was broken and here is what I experienced: - Tried to call the Lawrence store several times but was never able to get anyone on the phone, which I thought was very unusual. Since I didn't want to drive clear across town if I wasn't going to be able to get a tan, I decided to call he corporate office - the goal here is to try to get a better understanding of your process (do I need an appointment? can I just get one spray tan? or am I required to get a membership?). - A lady answered the phone who was super friendly and basically said that we could just walk in without an appointment and recommended that we get the 2 spray tans for $30. She stated that we aren't required to get a membership for spray tanning. Simple....great, we would stop by there after boating. - We arrive at the location at 7pm. When we walked in, there was no one else in the waiting area and a woman at the counter barely made eye contact and coldly stated that someone would be up in a minute to help us. She wasn't friendly or welcoming at all. - A few minutes later, another young lady comes up who seems much more friendly, but when we said we wanted a spray tan, she looked at me (probably noting that I had just come from the lake and didn't have purse on me) and said that I would need a driver's license to tan there. I was immediately taken back since I have been to many tanning places and had NEVER been asked for my driver's license to tan. So, I asked her, "Why do you need my driver's license? I'm 50 years old so I'm definitely old enough to tan" and she responded that it was their policy. My husband said," I have my ID, will that work?" At that point, she said that she would need to ask her store manager and she walked toward an office off to the left of the store. - When she came back, she asked if I had a copy or picture of my driver's license, which I didn't and she said that unfortunately I couldn't tan then. At that point, I told her that I had a huge problem with that and how it didn't make any sense, that my husband had his money, his id, we had talked to corporate about the process and now I'm being told that I can't get a spray tan. - Sierra, the store manager, then comes out of her office and looks at me and asks again, "do you have a copy of your driver's license?", which I again state that I don't. She re-stated that I can't get a tan since I don't have my driver's license. Her demeanor was rude, cold, unsympathetic and without any desire to propose a solution to the problem. I once again told her that I was extremely disappointed in their service and that this "driver's license policy" to spray tan didn't make any sense. I completely get that if I wanted to sign up for a tan membership which required a credit card for autopayment, asking for my ID would make sense, but that isn't what I was wanting or asking for. - I told Sierra as we were leaving that I would make sure to get the message out on social media that Sun Tan City not only has silly policies for getting a spray tan but their customer service was also an issue. She made a snide remark stating something like, "Do whatever you want, that is up to you". She never once apologized for the inconvenience, never tried to provide more insights into why this was a policy, and never tried to win us over as clients. In all my career, I have never had an experience quite like this one. I wasn't trying to buy alcohol, rent a car, or check-in at the airport; I was simply trying to get a spray tan and pay for it. I tried to look the "driver's license policy" up on their website, but couldn't find anything that speaks to it. I did see that if someone wanted to get a membership, then they would need to bring their ID (this is acceptable). If this policy truly exists, I highly recommend changing it. If it doesn't exist and those individuals at the location in Lawrence just decided to create their own red tape process, then they should be held accountable and reprimanded for this and their poor behavior. I understand how difficult it is in finding the good people, but it is so critical to an organization's success. Unfortunately, because of one bad apple who is also a store manager, Sun Tan City lost customers today and tarnished their brand in this community. RUDE RIDICULOUS and UNACCEPTABLE read more

Great new tanning facility in Lawrence. Very clean with helpful staff. You can "check in" online so that you do not have to wait when you arrive at the location, and they have a variety of options,including sunless, spray tanning. The prices are reasonable for the area and the clean, modern decor is very inviting. My new favorite place to get my summer glow on (even when it is a cool and rainy day). read more

i actually used to work for sun tan city- and am appalled at just how rude and caddy the (vast majority) of the staff here is. going into this place is like entering a twilight zone of bad vibes and just flat out unnecessary unfriendliness. I have had a sun tan city membership for years and really do not tan enough to even justify paying for it- going once every couple of months. Well, I went in and apparently my account was not charged for one month due to getting a new card that month. Easy fix- gave new card. She could not update it and said 'she could not tan me and I needed to call customer service' -- OH JUST LET ME ADD IT WAS FREE TAN WEEK AND TAN FOR FREE DAY. thank you. glorious. read more

I've been going to the Lawrence Sun Tan City for two years. I have found all of the employees to be friendly and helpful. The beds are really good, I use the Fastest level. The only thing is it is kinda pricey. but I would recommend it. read more

This place is terrible! I payed $87 for a one month membership so I could tan before my sorority's formal but because I signed up on April 2nd instead of April 1st, they made me pay again for an extra month! This is wayyy too expensive because I signed up just one day after when they wanted me too. Also, they only had one functioning spray tanner for the entire month I used it and one day I had to wait in line for two hours before I could use it! Find somewhere else in Lawrence to tan! I went into the store May 1 to cancel my membership and one of the employees told me I had to wait till May 5. I got online and went to chat just to see and I was told b the lady on chat that I had to tell them by May 1 so now I am out $40 because I will not be around in May to be able to tan. My friends and I were first time customers and they treated us like an inconvenience and were not helpful. The spray was overpriced and did not turn out good at all. Splotchy and barely dark. Every single time I've walked into this place the ladies at the front desk are SO rude. The constant reviews I see of people saying the same thing is absolutely horrifying and the people who manage this place should be embarrassed. Today was my last straw. I walked in and said "Hi! I've been a big fan of this place ever since I got my membership here! The beds are nice, everything is clean, I haven't had any problems with service. It's definitely worth the money. I've tanned at other places in town, this is my favorite. However, I'm here at 8:15am wanting to use my pretty pricey tanning package. The hours online and on the door states it opens at 8am. Typically, I wouldn't be picky about 15 minutes, but I've got several tasks I'd like to accomplish before work and this is highly unprofessional. My advice would be to call in the earlier morning before driving over, as this isn't the first time I've heard of this happening at this location. read more

I called about 10 minutes ago wanting to see if there was a versa spa/mystic tan or some kind of spray tan booth. I also wanted to know the price of the spray tan if spray tans were an option. I'm from Houston, Tx and am only in town for a few days visiting my boyfriend, & was willing to drop a lot of money. However, I will definitely never step foot in this business & find another tanning place to spend my money. The girl I talked to on the phone was extremely annoyed and had a terrible attitude about answering my questions, and honestly didn't even answer them. Was not helpful at all. I asked, "How much do you charge for a spray tan?" She replied, "Um, it depends on what color you get and how many add ons you do." I said, "So if I just got dark, how much would that be?" Quickly she said, "The lowest price is $24." Not even really answering the question, or willing to give me any other information about the spray tans. I understand being busy, i used to work at two different tanning salons in college..but there's no excuse for being unfriendly & giving TERRIBLE customer service. So rude. read more

What a Joke waited in line to checkin for 10 minutes the front desk attendant is trying to sell the same customer lotion for 10 minutes the 2nd attendant comes in 2 minutes after 1p.m. there is still 4 people in front of me that need help at this rate I will be here an hour. Don't do the memberships and wait for all the free promos they offer. I purchased my sunless membership in July last year and the bed in Lawrence has been not working numerous times on special occasions and I had to spend money elsewhere to get a spray tan with no compensation offered. The bed in Lawrence produces a horrible quality tan for how new the store is. Older locations have better quality beds. They offer online check in but in all actuality that does nothing for you. Said my wait would be 8 minutes and after an additional 30, I left as they'd given my spot to someone else. And last but not least, they do so many cheap promos it devalues your membership. Example, free spray week I had to wait over an hour for the free tanners to tan when I actually pay for mine. No benefit to having the membership. I reached out to corporate via their website and never received a response. They do all these promos to generate sales and memberships but don't value the ones they have. For that, I will not be renewing my membership and would suggest others to not purchase memberships but participate in the numerous promotions they have. It'll save you time and money! read more

I went in there when they first opened this location and it was horrible. As someone who is an experienced tanner I expect the staff members of a tanning salon to know the difference between beds, bulbs, and lotions. When the lady was trying to answer my questions about the beds she literally stated "We haven't learn the difference between bulbs" I was stunned, why would I trust someone or a business with my skin when they don't even know the differences between bulbs and what the bulbs do and also all their beds are used, for paying that much money I expect higher quality tanning beds. read more
