I wanted to love Sun Oaks because of its convenient location (near where I work), but after my 1-year contract I bolted. I think it would be better for what it's advertised as, a tennis a racquetball club. And it does have a good selection of classes. But I was going there to do cardio and weights, and that wasn't so great. The equipment seemed old and perpetually dirty, greasy, and covered in sweat drops. The cardio/weight room always smelled like feet...well, except once. That was a great day--I ran like 8 miles on the treadmill. But all the other days, feet. And the "towels" they offer are basically old, torn, stained, faded dish-rags. It's hard to distinguish the clean bin from the dirty bin, and I can tell they sometimes get mixed up. Also, the staff varies a lot. Some people are friendly, while others seem like it's a chore if I ask them to hold my keys. One girl even flung my keys back at me when I went to pick them up, like she didn't want to risk getting near my sweaty hand. Yeah, I'm sweaty. It's a gym--that's what happens there. Finally, when I told them I wanted to discontinue my membership after a year, there were some terms that I don't remember having agreed to, and I ended up having to pay another two months. Maybe it was all in fine print somewhere, but still, overall I don't think this place was worth all I paid when there are other places in town that are cleaner, newer, and friendlier. read more

A long time YMCA member I was reluctant to switch to Sun Oaks as they don't really have any basketball court or open gym games. Well many ankle sprains later basketball no longer the deciding factor so I made the switch about a year ago. love it! Learning tennis, lots of courts both inside and outdoor. Equipment is kept up, good weight room, trainers, very nice pool, spinning classes, yoga and friendly people. Glad I made the move. read more

Before moving to Redding, I had only tried large chain gyms that felt impersonal and intimidating. I would often get bored or felt too intimidated to use all the equipment, but the staff and members at Sun Oaks make you feel incredibly welcomed without any intimidation. I love the variety Sun Oaks offers. I can swim laps in their gorgeous pool one day, take yoga the next, and use the hot tub and sauna on my off days. My husband is a tennis addict so their clinics, tournaments, and indoor tennis courts keep him happy year round! read more

I have been a member for about 4 years. Pros: I like the classes, always have. Like any gym, there are some instructors that I prefer because they're more challenging. The indoor pool is nice, and water aerobics is good. Cons: The quality of childcare used to be excellent. Now, it's not as good. I'm sure it will change again in another few months due to turnover. I want to love this place cause the people are cool but it smells so terrible here. It's disgusting. The place is run down and in need of major renovations. The paint is peeling, decals coming off the walls, the bathrooms are moldy and dark. The kids room always smells like dirty diapers. I've been coming here a long time but can't hang anymore. Alot of tvs in cardio room dont work properly.bathroom outside of cardio room always reeks.wish there was a bigger variety of machines in weight room& the ones they have desperately need yo be replaced, they are so old & worn.no wifi in weight room.cardio equipment is also very out dated and old. Nice people, but the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. Although it appears they have a lot of members (evidenced by cars parked in the gravel lot and on the street), they have not improved the facilities to accommodate them all. The buildings are an old compilation with few amenities. Equipment stays broken, the weight room smells like a high school locker room and has old equipment. If you like tennis, it's good to be indoors, but the viewing area is extremely tight. The cardio room has terrible ventilation and gets uncomfortably hot when all machines are being used. For the prices they charge you will get a lot more for your money somewhere else. Unfortuneately, they are the only game in town for tennis. read more

I like this gym & all the classes they offer, but I initially joined for the lap pool. I was very disappointed to find out it was I useable from 3-7 M-F as a year round swim team practiced here. Much to my pleasure, the outdoor pool was expand into a lap pool- but only can be used for such before 4 pm M-F. Which puts me in the same predicament; not bring a able to swim after work until 7pm. I also am a little unhappy about the fact there are only 4 lounge chairs for the pool. I'm not 10 any more, I don't want to sit on the ground. I would love to swim laps when my schedule allows & sit on a lounge chair & relax for a few minutes after. Right now SO does not offer that so I will be canceling my membership. I do like this gym & the pools are very nice. Just not accessible if you work M-F. read more

I joined this gym under a friends membership which made it only 12$ for me to be a member which was great. I loved the class schedule and instructors. The reason for my low star rating is due to billing. My friend had her membership paid for by her job so I made my payments direct deposit. My friend added others to the membership without my knowledge for 25$. They only allow one person for direct deposit so other members had to pay through mail. When the people on the membership either forgot to pay or just didn't they charged it to my account. I called billing to ask if they could correct it and they said I would have to get reimburse through the members on the account. I just don't understand how I am responsible for other people's bill. I got no notice that I was getting charged 37$ instead of my usual 12$. I cancelled my membership. read more

Sun Oaks is very good at taking your money, but when you ask for more benches in the weight room or assistance getting the equipment hogs to share, they are completely absent. I was told that they are aware that the facility could use upgrading but they can not be held responsible for the behavior of their clients and I should not hold that against them. I feel they don't really care for anything but the money. I would advise anyone to avoid this outdated facility. read more

I have been a member for about 5 years now and I love this gym. They have a cardio rom, weight room, 2 pools, 1 Jacuzzi, outdoor tennis courts, indoor tennis courts, outdoor basketball, and indoor basketball, 2 racket ball courts, spin class, hot yoga class, weight training class, a big locker room with showers and then they have a smaller locker room with a shower near the pool. The weight room has updated equipment and so does the cardio room, they just recently built a new building to house all the classes in. They also offer daycare with your membership you get like 2 hours a day free and after that its like $3 but you cant leave the club lol, if you want to use the daycare make sure you have the people at the front desk put your name on the list or else you wont be able to use it because the slots fill up fast. They have amazing personal trainers my favorite girl trainer is Laura Davis, this is a woman who not only walks her talk but has the competition metals to prove it. My favorite male trainer is Brian Harris he is so helpful even without having a personal training session, but during the sessions he will kick your but. All membership come with 1 free personal training session so make sure you use it. If you go to this gym please remember to was your equipment down when your done, they have the towels and disinfectant right there to do it, and the staff comes in like 2x a day and cleans them down really well but a lot of germs can be passed at gyms so I like the cleanliness of this place. All in all I love this place and highly recommend it. Oh I saw someone complain about the small hand towels they hand out, a lot of gyms dont even give out hand towels, but when you walk in to the front desk just say "can I have a towel, a big one," and they will give you a proper shower size towel, the little ones are mostly for people who need it during their workout. read more

I am so disappointed! I have been a member for almost 2 years and sadly ended my membership with the final straw of being charged $240 extra for classes we did not take. Wendy and Bren had no trust in me when I told them it was not us. It was a nightmare getting my money back (they wanted to credit my account and not refund my bank) and I didn't receive the full amount promised by Bren. Mike brushed me off (his remark was that people lie all the time about fees charged to their account) and was rude and I never received a call back from Jeremiah, the owner. I stuck through their remodel of bathrooms last summer. That was terrible.....no place to change and what little space there was available for changing was taken over by all the children in summer programs. I was grossed out when there was constantly food and trash in and around the outdoor pool (knowing it was from the sheer amount of kids I did my best to be understanding). Now that I have joined another gym at a much better price I have come to realize how dirty Sun Oaks is. The buildings smell inside and the bathrooms are not clean. So if you decide to join this gym "ALWAYS CHECK YOUR MONTHLY CHARGE". Also it seams as though their monthly rates are all over the place. read more

I started my membership January 22nd 2015. It's been over a year now and I think it's the best investment I can make for myself. The classes are super motivational and all classes have great music. Yes the weight room is a little small but its doable. My husband workouts in there. It gets a little crowded around 5 to 6 but I just workout around those times. Mornings are the best but get there early cuz classes fill up quick. All in all its a pretty good place. The showers are clean, the club is clean. I love it there. read more

I had not been a member of a health club in over 15 years when I joined Sun Oaks. I absolutely fell in love with the group power class. The instructor leads, and you follow, and there's no thinking involved just lifting. And I loved it. Then I got into tennis! The pros and the coaches make the program what it is, and it is excellent! They are extremely gifted and talented instructors, professional in every sense of the word, and they really care about not only your tennis skills and improvement, but you as a person. i had a membership here but canceled after a short while.location was great for me but the membership was really pricey.they have a ridiculous sign up fee of $129,thats such a rip off.on top of the high monthly membership.one of the main reasons i joined here versus the other gyms in town was cause they had a sauna.but for the few months that i was a member there it never was on&so i would turn the temp up when i got there,waited an hour while doing cardio and would come back and it still would never get very warm at all.it didnt seem to really work well.and sun oaks closes so early sat& sunday that it just wasnt working out for me. but overall if the price was lower it would have worked out better for me.Really wish they had a separate weight room for women.this gym would be a good deal if you used all they have to offer,pools,tennis&classes, but just for working out its way too high in price. Also would have been great if they had a smoothie bar,thought it was very weird that they offer alcohol but no smoothies. The weight room is small&usually full&always stinky.i rarely could get in on a machine cause they were always full of people waiting for the machine.there isnt much of a variety of machines either.they do have a nice big cardio room.although,i notice when machine have issues,loud squeaks or arent working properly,it takes quite a while before they are fixed. It does have a very nice family feel there.it is a nice place,that offers more than any other gym club in town. I've been a member at Sun Oaks for 15 years (since I was in middle school). It's been fun to watch the club grow over the years. The staff has always been friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. The spin class is my favorite, but they have several amazing options for guided work outs. I purchased the Student Membership for $132 for three months and so far I am really enjoying my time here! I mainly use the gym for the group fitness classes such as Power, Active, Yoga and Fight. Kind if pricey but offers tons of classes, machines, weights, and spa. I recommend this place for families because it's all about family here. Yet also good for those that love to work out. Tennis and basketball courts are tons of fun but the place gets packed quickly so first come first serve. Babysitting is always friendly, again gets full quickly so reserving a day ahead is ideal but annoying. Parking between 5-7 is awful. Nice staff, and up to date machines and clean. read more

I joined Sun Oaks in February 2011 for the specific purpose of using the heated/covered pool for lap swimming to help my exercise regime and to help the arthritis in my neck, shoulders, hands and knees. That worked out great. It is a total pleasure and a great workout. Later, I decided to join the aqua aerobics classes and I now go to those 5 days a week. They are fun and a good workout. The instructors are nice, the staff is warm, friendly and helpful. I recommend it to everyone! read more

The worst tennis club I have ever been a member of, but the only option in town. The whole point of finding players at your level seems to be lost on these folks. Okay at first, but. . . . The swimming pool -- which they say is heated -- is freezing. The hot tub is almost always dirty (too many kids peeing in it I think). The club kids swim team -- SOAR -- completely takes over the entire pool area at the prime hours. The facilities are dirty and run-down. The management ignores member comments and complaints. The towel they give you is about the size of a washcloth. There is never any advance notice of anything (like pool closures, etc.). Definitely not worth nearly $500 a year just for a single membership. read more

My friends and I tried to get a gym membership here. The guy there promised us this great deal & had them sign what we thought were contracts. When we went back in to put me on as well, the lady there said that the prices we were quoted were incorrect & the price would be double what we were told they would be. They hadn't put any of my friends' information into their system. The woman who was there that day kept quoting their rate over and over, ignoring what we were saying about the price we were quoted. She called the guy from the day before & he said he hadn't entered any of their information into the system because he wanted to make sure it was right, but the paperwork was no where in the building. Then the woman said he was new & it was his first day on his own. She took down my friend's information & said they'd call. My friend's husband was upset & went back int the same day. They told him they'd have to wait till the owner came in & would call. Two days later still no call from them, so my friend's husband went back in. They said they would not honor the contract, saying it wasn't an official signed contract. When he asked to speak with the owner, he was told she was "too busy" in a class. He told the woman that two of us had quit a previous gym to join and she said "Sorry, there's nothing we can do." If any of us had tried to get out of a contract, we would have to pay fees. They were very rude, uncooperative, and unwillingly to work with us. We will be taking our business else where. read more

Joined a few weeks ago. I have enjoyed my time so far. At first my husband and I joined as a couple, but it only took a few days for us to add the kids on. I love the pools, the classes offered, the relaxing family atmosphere. I went yesterday and families had packed picnic lunches and come to swim and eat and spend the day together. Cardio room is a little small and cluttered but the weight area is nice and spread out. Unfortunately they only have two of my favorite machines in the cardio room and they are always very popular, so getting a turn on them can be difficult and you have to be fast. Really my only complaint is that there is one jacuzzi and its small and beside the family pool so its always full of kids. Hard to relax in the warm water with kids splashing you every five seconds and will be pretty unusable come winter. My main reason for joining was weight loss. Cardio room gets a 7 out of 10 because it seems a little bit of an after thought as compared to everything else. But the rest of the amenities 10 out of 10. Oh ya and the day care is pretty good except that I can't seem to use it on Saturdays as the last two have been completely booked well in advance. read more
