I chose Sun's Lawn Care based on the three positive Yelp reviews from April 2010 through June 2012 despite the firm's bid being the highest of the ones I solicited (after being made aware of that fact, Cong (the firm's principal owner) agreed to reduce his initial quote by $2,500). Unfortunately, my experience with the company was disappointing. I found Cong to be, at times, unprofessional, rude, combative and neglectful. And as the project progressed past two weeks, I deeply regretted hiring him because instead of making my life easier, he made it much more difficult. Despite paying Sun Lawn Care $17,800 to complete an overhaul of my in-laws' neglected yard 4 weeks before a planned celebration of my son's first birthday in late August, I found that Cong managed the project in a haphazard fashion (often showing up late in the day after attending to other jobs), repeatedly failed to meet deadlines that he himself set, installed plants and sod that quickly browned or wilted, constantly badgered me for money (despite my paying them $15,000 in the first two weeks after hiring them) while complaining about the work and neglected to fulfill an important agreed-upon task of installing lilac bushes along the side fences. To add insult to injury, Sun Lawn Care failed to finish sodding the side and rear lawn before my son's birthday party, left significant amounts of dirt along the driveway and curb for our guests to skirt and then had the gall to demand additional payment from me in the middle of the party while I was holding my son (on the basis that fulfilling the job that they were hired to do represented an extraordinary effort). I also learned during the project that Cong approached my in-laws on at least two occasions to encourage them to pay him "good money" to maintain the lawn going forward. On one occasion, he spiritedly told me that he knew how to lay sod, unlike "Mexicans who don't know what they are doing." Nevertheless, sod that Cong and his team initially installed in the front yard began to go brown mere days after it was installed. In addition, the hydrangea plants that were installed alongside the front entrance browned and wilted. When I e-mailed Cong about remedying the sod and the outgrowth of mushrooms in the sod, he responded in a manner that I found to be rude and condescending. Ultimately, he replaced much of the browned sod because its poor condition was readily apparent. With regard to the hydrangea plants, he asserted that they simply needed time to bounce back. Despite having paid the $17,800 in full, Cong did not respond to e-mails or voice mails promptly. When he did respond, he didso in a manner that I perceive to be disdainful with comments like "you have no knowledge about landscaping" and "I don't care what your (sic) saying to me now." He also refused to plant the lilac bushes, claiming that my wife told him not to (she strongly disagrees with that assessment). After much back and forth, I managed to extract a $350 refund for the unplanted lilac bushes. Sun Lawn Care left hoses out in the middle of the driveway (despite being paid extra to bury hoses out of sight) and we just noticed that additional brown patches have begun to appear in the sod of the front yard. I will now have to hire another landscaping firm to remedy these problems. read more

Terrible customer service. I emailed "Johnny" on the 9th of June and requested service. Johnny replied very shortly with "hi just lawn mowing?" to which I sent an immediate reply. Two days later I sent him a follow up email because I hadn't heard anything. He sent me a follow up email on the 11th of June stating a very reasonable estimate and I told him that would work. June 12th he stated he was going to look at the property and send me a contract. I waited two days and didn't hear anything and explained that if he couldn't handle the service that was fine but asked him not to waste my time. On June 15 he finally responds blaming a worker for him not emailing. He then states that he will send out a contract that night. He has yet to respond. I wish I could comment on the quality of his work but he seems unable to stick to his word. Update1: I exchanged emails with Johnny finally after writing the email. He continued to pass the buck and blame other people for his lack of commitment. He now decided that he doesn't service Des Plaines even though according to yelp's map he does cover my area (and much farther northwest and there is no information that I could find on his website. Again, if he was unable to have provided me with a service I would have understood that if he would have told me. Instead, he wasted my time. read more

Update: I did finally receive an email back from these guys. And they called me when I asked to speak on the phone rather through email! So far so good - I'll update on the service whenever it starts to snow! Lol I sent an email looking for a quote for snow removal in late November and received a quote and contract really quick! After checking with other residents I sent an email saying we wanted the contract (on November 30th). I mailed a signed copy of the contract and a check deposit on December 1st. I didn't hear anything. I sent another email on December 21st and I didn't hear anything back. I called today and sent an email today. It's snowing and idk if I have a contract or not. read more

Soooooo, when we bought our home we had a dreadful looking backyard that was totally shaded by a 25 foot maple tree. There was no grass because the overcast of the tree killed all the vegetation underneath it. Having young kids, I knew that our backyard would not suffice, but being a first time homeowner I had no clue how to judge a landscaping company. I came onto yelp and started to send messages to different landscaping companies for tree removal and sodding services. Out of the 10 that I emailed only 5 responded and of those 5 only 3 showed up to give me estimates. I settled on one of the companies and then I get a call from Johnny-- who told me over the phone that he would not let me sign up with anyone else and that he would beat anyone's price. His enthusiasm intrigued me so I had him come out and give me his estimate. I could tell right away that Johnny was confident in his work. I also discussed with him some of the negative reviews that other's had posted on yelp and he explained them away. That day I signed him up to complete my sodding work (the tree removal I contracted to someone else by that time). Anyway, Johnny came when he was supposed to, worked the whole day without taking even a lunch break (though I told him he was more than welcome to just relax since it was so hot outside). He and his co-worker have a very good work ethic. There was not a moment in the day that I wondered where he was or why he wasn't working hard-- he was always working hard and making progress. I think the job took a little longer than he anticipated, but he did not complain, he did not raise the price and he stayed until he finished the job. I will use Johnny again for future services. Johnny was great. I needed a large overhaul of my front yard, all new sod, regrade around house, trenching, installation of plants and mulch, brick blocks around landscaping, burying downspouts, and gravel the side of the house with more plants. He literally gave me an estimate right on the spot and then promptly emailed me a written quote the next morning. I had 5 different people give me quotes, the disparity in prices between them was odd considering each person was quoting me on the same project. Johnny came in just a nudge above the other lowest quote. Unlike all the other landscaper's that gave me a 3-4 week wait time to start the project, Johnny was able to start almost right away. The end result was better than expected. I will say one thing though, I had a difficult time with communication, but just remember, Johnny is basically a one man show and hires people as needed depending on the project size. Since he is busy doing a lot of the work himself, don't always expect an immediate response. After he was finished I showed him some other side jobs I needed around the house. He was more than happy to give me a quote and we will be hiring him again no doubt for some of those things, unless I suddenly become unlazy and do them myself. Sun or "Johny" how he called himself , stop by and give us an estimate that was few hundred $$$ more then some other Landscaping companies but assure us his work is far more superior then some of his competitors ?To the most of part he did Ok job and i'm not going to blame him for minor imperfections on this project . We were very happy with Cong's service, which by the way cost almost 50% less than the other estimate we got for the same work (only difference was the size of the bushes, Cong's were smaller). We have a small front yard in Wicker Park that was a mess, and he made it beautiful! He replied quickly to emails, provided estimates based on what I wanted, even sent photos of the plants at the nursery before he bought them.
