Inside out: lovely location with incredibly cozy feeling shop! Service/experience: I can't recommend going here enough. The people running this are passionate, fun, creative, and just over all incredible people! I went with my parents and husband, we had so much fun! Plenty of kids were on the trip and they seemed to have an amazing time as well. After, we went to the gift shop and got a few things to support the project and enjoy for memories. Over all I would say visit if you're on the fence, if you can ride during a time they are doing shows- even better! We were not disappointed and would absolutely go back to ride again, even for the same show! read more

We had a fantastic time! We came as a big group of 14- with 6 children ages 5-11- and they loved it too. We did the robbery train and it was such a fun experience. I highly recommend this to everyone kids or no kids! read more
I took the opportunity to do the Photographer's excursion they offer in the fall. It was a great trip with a volunteer to photographer ratio of about 1:1 and not everyone riding was taking pictures. They know the good places to get some fantastic pictures and try to accommodate special requests. They had a nice breakfast and lunch prepared for us as well. This in a nice organization that is trying to preserve a bit of history with narrow gauge trains. For enthusiasts, it's a must. They have a number of theme rides during the season. As for scenery, the first part of the ride is mostly seeing the tailings from the dredges that worked the area years ago, yet you can see the mountains. the current rail line is only 6 miles and the ride isn't smooth, but remember, the equipment is 100 years old. It runs between McKewen and Sumpter. Both are very tiny towns. Sumpter has the gold dredge to see and a bit of hiking. While it's not everyone's cup of tea, I think it's worth a trip if you are in the area. read more
I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about. We are a couple and we loved the moonlight ride! It was the engine's 100th birthday and they had cake and coffee at the stop in Sumpter. The all volunteer staff and train crew work very hard and are very gracious. They are dedicated to making each passenger's ride a memorable one. We had a great time and I'm sure we will be back again. read more

A must do!!! We took the robbery train from McEwen to Sumpter and back again! Approx 1hr each way with an hour stop in town in between. Many car options for seating, slower but enjoyable ride, scenery you don't see from road and watch closely there are some hidden gems such as two boots cemetery! Once unloaded at depot there is time to go grab ice cream or lunch in town, or walk to dredge and look around. Take a look around gift shop and right outside the "bandits" are there to give the kids a chance to get on the horses. Very friendly volunteers, each and every one! My daughter was sitting in an outdoor car by herself and asked if she would like to help set the brakes it made the whole trip for her!!! Hope they are able to continue this and expand! Thank you for such an amazing history experience! read more

The train is great for small kids, but not so great for couples of any age. Goes 12 miles, no mountains. Sumptner only had 3 open businesses on a saturday afternoon so plan on eating to kill the wait time. read more

I have always loved history. I've been a member since 1995 and started volunteering as a brakeman. I had the opportunity to work on operating steam locomotives as a fireman, but I served in all manner of other departments as well. The SVRR is a love affair for its member/volunteers. All are given safety training each year before the season starts in May. Not only is it a great way to connect with fellow railroaders and meet new people but learn about the history. I highly recommend a day trip for everyone. There are special event trains planned each year for our visitors. So much fun! read more
