Sumpter is a good destination for a motorsickle ride; I availed myself. Some years back, I camped in the Stockade grounds; they don't do camping any more, so I selected the very budget-conscious "No Frills Room." (If the wife had been along, we would've picked one of the fancy "theme" rooms... they all seem like a bargain to me.) The room - located behind the office - is indeed "no frills." But I was looking for a comfortable bed, and a nice warm shower. Both were part of the no-frills package; I was very satisfied. (BONUS: The owners are personable, and I enjoyed conversations with both of them, during my brief stay.) I'm sure I'll be back again. THANKS! read more

Three of us rolled into the cute old mining town of sumpter for a trail running race and decided rather than camping at the Fairgrounds (before running 30+ miles? no thanks!), we'd check out this cute motel. Needless to say, this was the best decision we could have made!! Ryan was thoughtful and attentive & the Juniper room lived up to the hype. When we finished our race, thunderstorms had rolled through and we were cold, soaking wet and tired. Ryan was kind enough to drop off some towels fresh from the dryer for us- so thoughtful! Our two nights in the Juniper room will not be forgotten, and I'm sure we will be back soon! read more

Historical Sumpter has this incredible motel that is now owned by the sweetest couple. We spent the night and was welcomed as if we were friends. The room was awsome, clean and roomy. Awesome!! We toured two rooms (the freestanding unit and the apartment on the second floor.) Both rooms were really nice but we went with the apartment. The kitchen came stocked with cooking utensils and the whole place had a real "at home" feel to it. I'd absolutely stay here again. The stockade/ courtyard area is open for tent camping and Harold gets a campfire going at night. Rita and her husband (Harold?) are incredible sweet and hospitable. He built the entire place by hand! It's really stunning. I'd recommend the Stockade Motel to anyone. read more

This was the best weekend getaway we have ever experienced as a family. The town is welcoming, cozy, and historic. The motel was perfect. From the owners, to the grounds, the rooms, everything. Every room has a theme, we were in the juniper room. We booked two other rooms as well. All SPECTACULAR. I have never felt more at home, it has everything you need. Everything was clean and organized. We did EVERYTHING here! Riding, grilling, fires, games, karaokee, hiking, museums, dredge, depot. It met the highest expectations in a family of 6 from ages 18-74. We have found our new vacation spot! The owners are the icing on the cake. Knowledge, accommodating, fun, down to earth. Great town, great motel, great history, great people. We had a truly scary experience here. Two friends and I camped on the front lawn. We chatted a bit with the owner, an older lady who has an RV on the property, and paid our $10 each. When we arrived there was one other tent set up, and another guy arrived shortly after and set up a tent as well. My friends and I went out for dinner, walked through town, and went to bed. Around 3am I was awakened by loud music and raised voices. I peeked out of my tent. A big pickup truck had pulled into the driveway, the passenger door was open, and the music was blasting. One man was inside the truck, another stood outside the passenger door, and they were having what sounded like a heated argument, though I couldn't make out what they were saying as I was groggy and still had earplugs in. By the time I woke up fully and took out my earplugs, one of the men was making his way back to the tent near us - apparently he was the one camping there. As he got into his tent he started talking to himself/his dog. The first clear thing I heard him say was, "I'll kill that ass..you're a killer and I'm a killer too. She hired a killer." So, I was terrified. My boyfriend woke up at that point. I whispered to him to keep still and that something scary was going on. As we watched, the hotel's owner came out of her RV and spoke sharply to the guy in the pickup truck about his music. "People are trying to sleep here," she said. He seemed apologetic enough and pulled his truck out of the driveway - and right onto the street outside the gate, where he immediately parked and turned on the music full-blast again. Tent guy gets up, talks briefly with the owner, and goes to yell at truck guy. Owner goes back to her RV. Truck guy follows tent guy back onto property. Apparently he is trying to get into owner's RV. Truck guy is blocking his way, shouting that he will "defend my grandmother with my life if I have to....with my life!" We are silently watching and listening from our tent, wondering if either/both of them are armed. Truck guy finally goes back to his truck. Tent guy comes back to his tent, but sits outside of it, vowing to keep watch all night. I hear the other camper in the yard, who I haven't seen yet, get up and go into the hotel proper, so I whisper to my boyfriend that we should, too. Inside we debate calling the police and the other camper tells us that if it makes us feel any better, he is carrying a firearm. "But they are too, don't you think?" I ask. "Yes, but I'm sober," he points out. So I'm usually not really on board with the "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" mentality. I'm usually more about "let's not let bad guys get guns." BUT I will say that in that moment I did find the Harley-riding gun-toting calm guy very reassuring. Seeing that it still seemed calm in the yard, we crept back to our tent. We exchanged some brief words with our friend in her tent, who of course was also awake and scared, and got back into ours. Other than some more intermittent music blaring and shouting, the excitement was over for the night. In the morning, no one offered us any kind of apology or refund. The owner didn't even come out of her RV. We got breakfast at a little diner across the street and got out of there as soon as possible. Of course in the morning light things seemed less scary, but I can say in all honesty that I was really, truly scared for my life for a few moments there. A drunk angry guy muttering about being a killer in tent 5 feet away from me is enough to make me give this place one star and never, ever go near there again. read more

Truly would be a 4.5 star review if possible. We stayed again in the Juniper room and loved it. The new owners are wonderful and you can see pride in their work and how much they're putting into this place. It was all Christmas decor and very festive for the season. Positive: great management, cute, well priced, great area/location, lots of hot water Negative: the water pressure even at 1am was sad. I would also say the mattress was firm, but that's just a preference my husband would mark that under positives. Also not their fault, but we forgot shampoo and it was a bummer they didn't have little ones in the rooms. We can't wait to stay here again, for sure our go to place whenever in the area. We stayed in the Roundup room and loved it.This place is really cool and the new owners are so friendly.Very clean,beds comfortable and decent price.Close to Nugget dispensary and Coughie Pot stores.Yes the heating is alittle off but they give you a lot of nice fluffy blankets.I will stay here again next visit. read more

We had a family vacation in gold country and the Sumpter Stockade Motel was the VERY BEST MOTEL EVER to stay at. The place was EXTREMELY clean and had all the amenities you would need or want. The owners are fantastic, very welcoming, friendly and kind hearted. The rooms are way bigger than a normal hotel/motel and the decor is so thoughtful placed and reminiscing of old times it was like a little museum in your room. The juniper room we stayed in was perfect. Can't wait to come back and the kids can't either. Thank you so much for being so helpful and kind. read more

Beware: Dishonest manager. The worst night I ever had at a motel ever. The manager is devious. When we called to book a room she assigned us to the Old West Room. When we called she didn't tell us that we would have no control over the heating-cooling system. When we checked in, she didn't tell us, either. Only after we paid for two nights of lodging as the manager was showing us the room, did she then tell us we would have no control over the ventilation system. She had a good reason for not telling us until we had paid for the room. We stayed one night, the worst night of my life in a motel. The unit below our room has control over the heating-cooling in their room and our room, also. Our room had no thermostat. I could have died that night because the room temperature dropped to unbearably cold temperatures because the air conditioning was on all night long. I barely made it through the one night. The room became extremely cold and the air conditioning was noisy. On all night, it was not turned off until 8 am the next morning when the motel tenants below us checked out. -- Again. The manager was devious in carefully not telling us that the room had a serious flaw. We left immediately after one night. The manager refused to refund our money for the one night we did not stay. After a long day on the road we spent a night shivering, waiting for the morning to leave. read more
