AHS covers grades 10 to 12, it is a smaller school and the hallway walls are covered with amazing art work of the students which is to be expected as AHS does not have a sports team but does have a great reputation for their arts department. AHS opened its doors in 1974 and was independent of any school board, run at that time basically on alternative education ideals that were popular in the seventies Although it became a part of the Calgary Board of Education(CBE) in 1975, it still provides a very personal, informal and democratic learning environment. The staff here is fantastic, very warm and the students look quite engaged with what they're doing, definably a high school to think about if you adolescent has an alternative way of thinking or learning.

It now no longer a k-8 or a 5-8 but rather a 6-8, the teachers are always looking for ways they can help the students. it was an amazing experience. they have also lifted the stupid rules stated in Meg F.'s post.

Although many of the teachers at this school are FANTASTIC, love them, there are also some very very rude teachers, and rude staff. I found out recently as well that if they are seen hugging, they will be suspended. Have you heard a more ridiculous thing?. I remember when I went to that school, If you skipped a day of school, they'd suspend you, and send you home for an at home suspension. That doesn't really make sense. The common sense has totally been lost, it's all about power now, I'm actually angry about this. It's also a little small which makes it good for the students too learn but difficult in the friend department. It has around 400 students.

It has a number of different programs that it offers, from the regular stream to the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education), to the program that had support for deaf and hard of hearing kids to the ballet super queen program. It dealt with a lot of stuff. It was a little cramped, and a bit maze-like, but if you spent a lot of time there you figured it out. The school wasn't big enough to have a football team, so we shared one. All in all, an all around ok school. Some loved it and thrived in it, others detested it, and all the different programs resulted in a decent amount of stratification which probably wasn't that different from other High Schools. I could send my kids here without fear for their physical well being, and probably with the assurance that their brains were growing too.

Really, no alumni rushing to review this place? To be fair, I am not an alumni as I was only there…read moreuntil Grade 11, at which point I decided to not risk having to return for a fourth year of self-study, which had been going unsteadily at best. Some months I would slay credits like a Viking, others I would spend in a daze of hanging out in the Science area, taking endless trips to Yellow Sub to play Pac-Man, and throwing apples at Chris B's car. Okay, that only happened once. I do not have contact with any of my former classmates from here, so I find that my experiences and memories of this place are very insular, and will probably recede into the shadows my mind as years pass: with no communal chatter, I will likely be unsure if something I can "remember" from grade 10 happened to me, or if I saw it in a movie somewhere. It's kind of a sad prospect, but then it's only high school. Big whoop! If any Carroll students read this, I encourage them to try this social experiment: check in at 8:30, drive up to West Edmonton Mall, ride the Galaxyland roller coaster, then drive back in time for check out at the end of the day. I guarantee it will prove to be one of the most educational days of your lives!

We have been at the Lycee for years and have two kids in early/middle school. We have been so impressed with how the school has handled the recent events. Without skipping a beat our kids are now being taught online and are learning at a rapid pace. The teachers we have had are all incredible. I will say that the academic standards are extremely high and your child will be expected to work hard. Monitoring in the school playgrounds could be improved but this past year I've seen an improvement with programs brought in to aid the teachers and kids on this topic. To be pragmatic we are lucky to have so many great schools in Calgary and not all of them will be a good fit for any given child. I do know two families that have moved their kids to a different school but have returned. That's a good indication of the quality of our school.

It's part of a net of schools worldwide, which makes it easy to transfer to another lycee if you are moving overseas. Also, older kids can spend a year abroad and study the same curriculum. What made me decide was the curriculum, the class sizes, and the flip program. My children started in grades 3 and 5 and had no prior french! We took advantage of that, and so glad we didn't wait longer. Grade 5 is the last grade the intensive program is offered. We are in our third year, and I must say I couldn't be happier, the teachers are great, I love the atmosphere, for the parents as well, and my children work hard to do their best and are happy.
