I was quite impressed with this high school simply for two things, the name of the school and that a dog greeted me at the door; this apparently is the school dog or mascot and I had to find my way to the main office fast as my hand was definitely getting a huge tongue bath.
AHS covers grades 10 to 12, it is a smaller school and the hallway walls are covered with amazing art work of the students which is to be expected as AHS does not have a sports team but does have a great reputation for their arts department.
AHS opened its doors in 1974 and was independent of any school board, run at that time basically on alternative education ideals that were popular in the seventies Although it became a part of the Calgary Board of Education(CBE) in 1975, it still provides a very personal, informal and democratic learning environment.
The staff here is fantastic, very warm and the students look quite engaged with what they're doing, definably a high school to think about if you adolescent has an alternative way of thinking or learning. read more
