First of all, the office staff (Christine and Sarah) are horrible (mischedule appt.'s and…read moresurgeries!). How, Jeoffrey P. Benson M.D., PhD., is in the field of pain management is beyond me: no empathy whatsoever for patient(s). No follow-up: NONE (no contact made after having medical device implanted over a two year period; you'd think they'd follow-up to see how you are doing, if for no other reason, b/c he is supposed to be "managing pain"). I had a medical device implanted in 2008, followed by a heart attack due to blood clot - now medical device has failed (Dr. Benson could care less now that the insurance has paid for the surgery). When asked why the office had not made any follow-up (nor the medical device company), Dr. Benson stated that I hadn't contacted him. Ignoring this response, I stated that I had a myocardial infarction. Dr. Benson replied: "it took you two years to recover?" I'm sorry, but who is the patient and who is the "pain management" doctor who doesn't follow up, and then throws it in my face that it took 'two years for [me] to recover from a heart attack'. Dr. Benson also was unable to operate the digital/electronic device in HIS office to read my implanted device. Dr. Benson casually mentioned that the Medical Device representative was supposed to have been in his office, but his other patient for the day cancelled (why the Medical Device representative wouldn't have still come in to see me is beyond my comprehension as Dr. Benson was well aware of my complaints that the medical device had begun to protrude (causing pain and stinging) and I was receiving an error code on the remote. Likewise, the only response I got from Dr. Benson regarding me symptoms was the question, "Are you having electric shocks?". I almost cancelled my surgery the day of and I should have instead of going through with this "doctor". This pain management "specialist" is all about the payment from the insurance company or you. The office itself is antiquated. Dr. Benson couldn't even tell me what type of battery was implanted inside my body (medical device) by he himself. * P.S. Their new website is laughable; especially the models shown on the website and made to appear as though they are on staff. These are not real people who work at the "center"- there is one photograph of the actual Dr. Benson on the entire website and he is the only doctor despite the misleading nature of the website which implies that there is more than one specialist {as of June 2010}. * www.painmanagementsb.com *

I wish I could remember everyone's name to thank them personally but everyone from the PA,, nurses, recovery nurses, surgeon and anesthesiologist treated me with kindness and respect. Dr Shepard and his team including the very important anesthesiologist cared for me in a way that brings tears to my eyes. Dr Shepard made the decision to try to save my toe. The anesthesiologist made the decision to do a block so that I would not experience much pain on the flight home the next day. The orthopedist I saw in AZ for follow up has praised Dr Shepard and his team many, many times. I have a long road for a full recovery but have had no infections, my toe appears primarily intact and recovered. Thank you Dr Shepard and anyone who cared for me that day. I have never, ever been cared for in a medical facility with such kindness, genuine concern and the best decision making. I am still emotional and so very thankful when I think back on that day. Words do not do these beautiful professionals justice.

Every day I was in the hospital, he came to ensure that everything was going smoothly. I experienced extreme pain prior to the surgery, but my new knee is perfect.
