My husband and I love Dr. Spiegel. He seems to really care. His staff is efficient, especially Heather. I highly recommend him.

After two back surgeries in 1998 and 2001 I had some relief but not enough and any relief was short lived. I tried every kind of therapy from cupping and acupuncture and Guasha. A picture of the guasha and its impact on my body is attached to this post. I also have had over 100 injections from epidurals to radio frequency ablation with little to no relief. I've seen several hypnosis experts again to no avail. After all of these attempts for relief I went to Dr. Hersel who suggested I try a spinal stimulator implant. I knew about this procedure and had studied it many years ago, but I was concerned about its efficacy. Dr. Hersel gave me a packet describing the procedure using the newest implant from Abbott Labs and St. Judes. First, all the earlier implants required charging the battery every day or every other day. The Abbott implant has a ten year battery requiring no charging. After studying this implant I decided to try the Abbott model. This requires a test with the unit being attached to the outside of my body to be sure the implant will work for my pain. After a one week trial I was seen by Dr. Hersel and an Abbott technician and I reported to them I thought all my pain had disappeared. With all these different implants the goal is to bring at least 50% relief. So with the results clearly indicating I was a candidate for the permanent implant we scheduled surgery immediately. The surgery took approximately two hours. It required an incision in my mid spine and snaking of electronic leads from the surgical site through my spinal canal which is an extremely delicate procedure done with a fluoroscope to avoid puncture of the spinal canal. The leads are carefully placed and end at the battery which is placed in a pocket in the upper buttock through an incision made by the surgeon below the skin. BTW this is done under general anesthesia so you feel nothing and a strong numbing medication allowed me to feel no pain when I awoke. Dr. Hersel and the Abbott technician were there when I awoke. I was told the surgery was perfect and I should get at least 50% relief. Now here's the only bad news about these surgeries. When the numbness goes away there is what I can only describe as excruciating pain from the two surgical sites. There is significant swelling at these sites. For me the pain was horrible for three weeks. After a month the site pain began to subside. My pain wouldn't have been as bad if I took pain medication but because of a certain condition I have I am unable to take any pain medication other than Tylenol which didn't help. I believe the pain would have been significantly less had I been able to take anti inflammatory meds. The bottom line is after the incisional pain lessened I had no more lumbar spine pain. After those horrendous years of agony I finally had a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm thrilled to write I still have no pain five weeks post surgery. For anyone suffering from spinal pain, after trying other therapies, I cannot stress how important it is to set up an appointment to see Dr. Hersel. Not only is Dr. Hersel my surgeon but he is a cherished friend. He is the most caring and gentle physician I have ever known. His staff from receptionists, nurses, anesthesiologists and others is also as gentle and caring as their leader. They make what could be a very difficult day instead a pleasant experience. Dr. Hersel's contact information is contained in his bio on Yelp. If you have any questions or just want to talk I am happy to oblige. Just leave your contact information in an email to sje1949@earthlink.net Here's to your future pain relief.

After having trouble with my knee for a while and the pain and swelling increasing, Dear Hubby…read moresuggested UrgentOrtho at Ventura Orthopedics. We went in on their Saturday hours, which are limited, but a blessing to bot have to take time off work. They do have a smaller staff available on Saturday, so the wait to see various personnel took some extra time. After filing out personal and medical history on a tablet (with a rather clunky interface), I was sent up to the second floor. There, in due course, x-rays were taken by a friendly, experienced tech. Then a waiting period in an exam room ensued with DH and I making small talk about having health challenges during the holidays. He's been to the main practice to see an ankle specialist in the past. That's how he knew about the urgent care part of the practice. When the doctor came in, she was very upbeat. She reported the good news that I don't have arthritis in the knee. She then did a physical exam on the swollen, tender joint. She said that an MRI would be the next step, along with physical therapy. She gave a thumbs up to the copper-infused compression sleeve that I'd ordered online. Compression, icing, and limited heating, plus a new type of anti-inflammatory were all recommendations she made. It took several days for the MRI referral to come through / approval from insurance. The practice kept me informed with texts, which I appreciate. After the MRI I will go back for a full diagnostic update. So far I've been pleased with the care and communication / follow up with this practice.

The doctor was good. The amount of time I had to wait to go in was absurd. I had to wait an hour…read moreto get into a room and still had to wait.

I suffer from multiple severe and chronic conditions in my cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. I've had multiple cervical and thoracic fusions and other spine operations. I also have chronic spinal cord issues and extremity nerve damage, as well as other chronic/severe health conditions. My complex health conditions include unusual presentations and present huge life challenges. I'm also a highly educated professional trying to stay engaged with my treatment, and safe to say I have very high standards for my doctors. From my first appointment with Dr. Jagtiani, I could tell that he was thoughtful, knowledgeable, engaged and caring. Dr. Jagtiani spent a long time reviewing my case, suggested several immediate steps I could try for pain and symptom reduction, and outlined a possible long-term course of care/things we could try. Since then Dr. Jagtiani has treated me with numerous guided injections (e.g. celiac plexus blocks and thoracic, cervical and lumbar guided epidurals/nerve blocks). Not only has Dr. Jagtiani focused on my prescribed medications, but he has been able to advise me regarding non-prescription treatments. For example, I suffer from severe problems sleeping. Dr. Jagtiani was able to suggest helpful medications, supplements and protocols based on medical study results. Further, my spinal issues create/contribute to severe digestive and abdominal problems. Dr. Jagtiani suggested a helpful celiac plexus block procedure. Simply put, Dr. Jagtiani (1) utilizes a scientific/evidenced based medical approach, (2) is an engaged, highly motivated and caring doctor, and (3) is a down-to-earth, energetic and naturally caring person. Any patient will be lucky/blessed to work with Dr. Jagtiani.

I thought maybe he was having a bad day. I was surprised that Mr. Spelts did not reference the pages of SOCI questions of health history, even when I mentioned he might want to look at them. I was surprised he didn't have a transcriber in the room and was not really listening to what we were saying. He was inaccurate and aggressively twisted what I said - which was very strange. It actually felt like he didn't want to do any procedures, because he didn't have time and wanted to leave - I finally asked him if he had run out of time. He made a comment under his breath about the insurance and dismissed coverage, so that was kind of illuminating. I found him to be arrogant, dismissive and passive aggressive during the appointment - I even had to ask multiple staff members if he was a doctor.
